2 OBO s Extreme Green Team! The Department of State, Overseas Buildings Operations established an Extreme Green Team! With creative campaigning and fun events, the team engages employees in taking more green action. OBO commemorated World Water Day in 2010 with an event of their own. By incorporating activities and giveaways with calls to action, the Extreme Green Team was successful in getting their message out! I really enjoyed World Water Day at OBO I had no idea that only 3% of the world s water is fresh water, and learned some new tips about how I can conserve water on my own, said one OBO employee.

4 Raytheon Sets Course for Sustainability Raytheon has set short, medium, and long-term goals for sustainability and shares these goals publicly and internally. Key areas of focus: Energy Efficiency Greenhouse Gas Emissions Eco-Friendly Supply Chain Recycling/Waste Minimization Water Conservation Design for Sustainability Environmental Stewardship

6 Crystal City BID Efficiently Lighting the Streets! To enhance the pedestrian gateways in Crystal City, the BID installed 20 new, LED light fixtures that save energy while providing the same amount of light output. Inspired by the environmental benefits of the new lights, they retrofitted 40 additional fixtures! Estimated Savings: The 60 new fixtures reduce annual emissions of greenhouse gases including 69,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, over 800 pounds of methane, and 1,150 pounds of nitrous oxide. The Crystal City BID embraces a Green perspective in everything we do whether it is using compostable materials at our events, advocating for cycling and transit, hosting the Power Purge & Shred, or launching a weekly farmers market. Using LED lighting in enhancing our gateways was a natural way to make Crystal City more accessible while having a measurable environmental impact. -Angela Fox, President/CEO

8 Matrix Group Cuts CPU energy usage by 62%! Matrix Group's main power consumption is from computers and servers. They assessed power settings and rolled out a plan to put everyone on a consistent power-saving scheme with power-management settings. Estimated Savings: Cutting computer energy usage by about 62%, as well as lowering 'wear & tear' on the computers! "It was time to tame our Power-Hungry machines. Instead of running the computers for 24hrs-a-day/7daysa-week, we are running them essentially for 13hrs-aday/5days-a-week. -Rich

10 SRA Recycles 68% of Waste! The combination of outreach and education campaigns, staff volunteers, and a strong corporate commitment to recycling have proven to be a successful model for SRA International. Estimated Savings: Approximately 68% of SRA s waste is recycled. During the first year of this initiative (2010), SRA s Arlington Center office recycled about 48 tons of paper, saving: 819 trees 337,400 gallons of water 144 cubic yards of landfill space 96 barrels of oil

12 The Conservation Fund Makes Recycling Easy!

13 Matrix Group Saves Landfills! Matrix Group started a campaign to divert a large portion of their waste into compost. Compostable materials are collected in a separate bin and taken by volunteers to the Crystal City drop-off point multiple times a week. Estimated Savings: Diverting 33% of compost from the landfill! "This is a great program. I can compost 99% of my sandwich wrappings and leftovers. - Maria

16 The Conservation Fund Makes a Green Kitchen! Estimated Savings: Thanks to replacing one-use materials with multi-use materials, the Conservation Fund is now saving $1,365 a year since they do not have to order supplies. I am definitely more cognizant of waste and recycling. I rarely if ever, put anything in my big trash can. If I have a plastic bag, I take it back home and reuse it. I really did think I would miss the paper cups cause I used them so much, but making the transition to my pretty, new glass was easy! Also, I rarely print anything I m going paperless! - Wendy

19 Matrix Group Loves Car-Free Commuting! Matrix Group encourages alternative transportation by providing indoor bike storage and showers at the neighboring gym free of charge. Matrix also pays for employees to commute with public transportation through Metro's SmartBenefits program. Results: Approximately 28% of Matrix Group staff are doing a 'green' commute by walking, biking, or using Public Transit. "When the cyclists in the office expressed concern over the bike storage options, Matrix Group worked together with the office building to create great indoor bike Storage. -Liz

20 The Conservation Fund Friendly Reminders The Conservation Fund provided staff with reminders on their monitors to power down at the end of the day. The mini trash can is a great reminder to be more environmentally conscious, and I use mine throughout the day. - Brendan

23 Nathan Associates Saves Power & Resources! A new phone system powers down 10pm - 7:30am and uses 40% less power They held three collection drives: A used eyeglasses drive for Lions Recycle for Sight, collected 38 pairs of eyeglasses. A business clothing and accessories drive for Training Futures, collected 270 gently used items. A used cell phones drive for Doorways for Women and Families, collected 20 used cell phones.

25 SIGAL Construction Bags Promote Green SIGAL created a marketing program called the green printing partnership. Reusable shopping bags are distributed with codes on them. When codes are entered online at their website, SIGAL makes a purchase of renewable energy. To date, the program has offset 125 tons of CO2.

27 SRA Explains Energy Use SRA recruited Go Green Champions in over 10 offices across the country. The Champions helped to create an Energy Performance Label that includes building energy use information and tips for employees to help make improvements. Here s a draft!
