1 Environmental Management Policy Statement 1. Commitment Busways Group, as a major public transport provider, seeks to make a considerable effort to minimise its impact on the environment through the efficient use of resources in the provision of large-scale public transportation. The use of heavy vehicles in the provision of public transportation as well as the workshop and administrative aspects of the business has a significant impact on the environment. This however, is balanced by the positive impact public transport has, as a means of reducing car use, and thus private vehicle emissions. Busways believes that business improvement, undertaken responsibly and efficiently, will help create a sustainable future for both the business and the environment. The Group is committed to improving its environmental performance, and minimising its overall environmental impact across all areas of operation in all localities. As one of the major public transport providers in NSW, Busways recognizes its opportunity to demonstrate leadership in this area. Busways is committed to continually decrease the environmental footprint of the company through a range of strategies, addressing resource management, waste management, fleet performance, purchasing, staff engagement & education, and stakeholder engagement & education. This policy statements provides a framework for Busways Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and associated action plan, which will document the company s planning for improved environmental performance through defined objectives, clear targets, documented strategies, allocated responsibilities, and measurable performance indicators. The EMP will be reviewed annually. 2. Responsibility The carries the key responsibility for the development and implementation of the EMP. The works in cooperation with a focus group of employees from diverse departments.

2 Environmental Management Plan 2008 To 2012 OBJECTIVES STRATEGIES IMPLEMENTATION TIMETABLE Meet the Government s objectives to introduce performance standards, which include standards concerning greenhouse emissions by buses as defined by the Passenger transport Act, 1990, as amended. 1 Further develop current action plan based on Busways Environmental Management Plan, including targets, measurable key performance indicators and responsibilities. 2 Implement Environmental Action Plan 3 Monitor Busways environmental performance 4 Participate in government sustainability programs, such as the RTA s Clean Fleet program. Action plan includes strategies to reduce use of natural resources, incl. energy, fuel & water use, use of high quality fuel, operating buses to test cycle emission standards, fleet maintenance that complies with the average requirements of the MBSC, meeting of ADR/Euro standards for vehicles, appropriate training for drivers in eco-driving techniques and provision of a network of integrated services that reflects desired travel pattern Establish regular monitoring processes. Action plan completed and reviewed annually Install eco-friendly technology, such as catalytic converters, ultra-low sulphur diesel, high quality oil filters, enhanced braking, and propulsion systems, particulate traps and computerized fuel and engine management systems. Introduce measures to reduce fuel consumption Establish key performance indicators for measuring fuel & other efficiencies, e.g. fuel/100 kms and fuel/pax kms. Establish initiatives to minimise waste to landfill - Recycling program implemented education ongoing

3 OBJECTIVES STRATEGIES IMPLEMENTATION TIMETABLE Meet the contractual requirements of the MBSC to prepare an Environmental Action Plan and to report annually on performance Comply with all statutory obligations relating to environmental protection. 1 Improve current action plan based on Busways Environmental Management Plan, including targets, measurable key performance indicators and responsibilities. 2 Annually review Environmental Action Plan. 3 Include performance measures of MBSC s SQI when they are available. 4 Develop appropriate management practices to ensure that the Environment Action Plan is implemented. 5 Ensure that a budget is available to enable the implementation of the plan. 6 Measure environmental performance against set targets. 1 Develop an understanding of obligations of a bus operator under NSW law with regard to environment protection. 2 Maintain a sound knowledge of environment protection laws as they are amended. 3 Provide information and training to staff on changes in environment law. Define Busways commitment to sustainability Develop measurable KPI s Report Greenhouse Gas Emissions annually through NGERS Integrate environmental objectives with business planning activities. Acquire a working knowledge of the following enactments: o Environment Operations Act o Environment Operations (Waste) Regulation o Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation o Environment Operations (Noise Control) Regulation o National Environment Protection Measure.
