2 Low Levels of Dissolved Oxygen Possible Causes Oxygen demanding material (organic matter, ammonia) from the watershed is consumed in the reservoir Oxygen demanding material is produced and consumed within the reservoir this requires an external supply of phosphorus and other nutrients TMDL To minimize the probability of exceeding the screening criterion for chlorophyll a,, the average TP concentration in the upper reservoir must be reduced to less than mg/l, a 44% reduction This implies a similar reduction in the average TP concentration for the entire reservoir (from to 0.053) TMDL Load desired = TP*Z(ρ ρ + σ) Load desired = 47.5*4.34( ) = 865 mgtp/m 2 *year or 59,200 kg/year To achieve a 50% reduction in average TP concentration in the reservoir, a reduction in loading of 75,300 kg/year is required (134,500-75,300=59,200): a 56% reduction in load TMDL Implementation Point Source Industrial Municipal Nonpoint Source Agricultural Urban Mining Agricultural Best Management Upgrade of Industrial and Municipal Wastewater Systems to Provide Additional Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal Practice Implementation 2
