Summary of the Reader This Level 6 Reader looks at homes, why we need them and what they can be made of. It compares houses of the past, present and future, looks at interiors and examines some unusual buildings. What is stressed is the way shape and materials depend on regional and climatic features. The prospect of ecologically friendly houses is discussed. Introducing the topic: Houses and homes Before students read the book Get students to bring in photographs (or pictures) of their house and hand them round. In pairs, they ask each other what they like about their homes. Get students to bring in a photo cut out from a magazine of a house they like. In small groups students discuss what they like about their chosen photos. Did you know? Some of the most expensive houses in London, in streets known as mews, were originally built as stables for horses. The Greek philosopher, Diogenes, made his home in a barrel. 1

Each group presents the findings to the class, with illustrations if possible. Art and design / Environmental studies Ask students to work in groups to do a project in which they design, draw and write about a futuristic house which will not damage the environment. Science Teach the words earthquake, fire, flood, terrorism, as things which can damage houses. For homework, get students to choose one of the building materials mentioned in the Reader, and write a few sentences about the good points and the bad points of this material. Geography Ask students to work in groups. They choose a country in the world. Tell them to use the internet to find out what kinds of homes are typical of that country and to make a poster to show what they find out. 2

3 Class Activities (After Reading) Here are some activities to do with your class after reading A World of Homes. 1. Quiz When the students have done the Book Quiz (page 40 of the Reader), divide them into two teams. Get each team to write a quiz with six questions using the information in the book. Team A asks Team B a question, then Team B asks Team A a question until all questions have been covered. 2. Dream house Ask students (at home or in class) to write a description of their dream house.
