CARLCARB CARBON FILTRATION FOR FOOD, BEVERAGE, PHARMACEUTICAL, BIOTECH AND CHEMICAL USE PURITY THROUGH QUALITY TM

INTRODUCTION Activated carbon plays a critical role in a vast and diverse range of applications. It is commonly known for its decolourisation and deodourisation properties within the food and beverage market. Activated carbon also plays an important role in the pharmaceutical, biotech and fine chemical industries by also offering the adsorption of impurities and unwanted components. To meet these demands there are a large number of activated carbons available offering different levels of activation, molecular structure and purity levels. To meet the demanding range of applications and to simplify the process from lab testing to full production, Carlson Filtration have a comprehensive range of activated carbon media within the CarlCarb Range. Benefits: The benefits of filter sheets or lenticular modules containing one of the Carlcarb range of carbons are: Eliminates the need for loose activated carbon powder or granules Eliminates the need for use of filters and filter aids to facilitate the removal of activated carbon from the process fluid No messy filter cake handling or disposal Less time consuming Easier and cheaper disposal of spent filter materials Totally enclosed system More effective carbon use (less kilograms of carbon required) CARBON TREATMENT APPLICATIONS These include de-colourisation of API's (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients), blood products, glucose solutions, antibiotics, solvents, sugar syrups, cosmetics, silicone oils, electroplating chemicals, alcoholic beverages; de-odourisation of some spirits; de-chlorination of water; off-tastes removal in food and beverages, endotoxin reduction in API's, catalyst removal from API's.

PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE CARBONS For pharmaceutical and fine chemical markets Carlson offer a standard range of 3 Carlcarb carbon grades aimed primarily at pharmaceutical and fine chemical applications. Other bespoke carbon grades are available, subject to volume. All grades are low pyrogen content, are high carbon content (60%) and standard weight (1300gsm). Carlcarb ICN has excellent micro and meso porosity and is widely used in pharmaceuticals for endotoxin reduction and decolourisation. The carbon is of high purity, with high activation levels and with very low trace metal content. It is also USP compliant. Carlcarb MCN is a high performance carbon with a broad range of adsorption but is particularly good for macro porosity and removal of large colour molecules, associated with decolourisation of vitamins, antibiotics and proteins. High purity level. Carlcarb PCN is a cost effective carbon used in general pharmaceutical applications. Offers a high level of activation across the macro, meso and micro pore sizes. Excellent colour adsorption plus broad adsorption range. Low ion levels. 12" Module 16" Module 40cm sheet 60cm sheet Application Structural pore Endotoxin Kg PAC M 2 Kg PAC M 2 Kg PAC M 2 Kg PAC M 2 Size EU/ml ICN Decolourisation, Medium Small <0.1 exdotoxin reduction PCN Deodourisation Medium Large <0.1 MCN Decolourisation, Medium Large <0.1 Vitamins, Antibiotics, Proteins NB PAC - Powdered Activated Carbon

GENERAL PURPOSE GRADES For beverage, chemical and general applications Carlson offer the Carlcarb "A" range of carbon media in 3 forms to suit different applications: Carlcarb AN Standard carbon content (46%) and standard weight (1300 gsm) Carlcarb ALN Standard carbon content (46%) and lightweight (1080 gsm) Carlcarb ACN High carbon content (60%) and standard weight (1300 gsm) Carlcarb "A" carbon is our standard grade with a good broad adsorption range, from micro to macro pore size. For general non pharmaceutical use. Good colour removal and high activation level. Used widely in beverage, sugar, chemical and miscellaneous applications Carlcarb QCN High carbon content (60%) and standard weight (1300 gsm) Carlcarb QCN is a higher adsorption, higher performance grade for similar markets and applications. With high 60% carbon content, low ion content and a higher adsorption capacity carbon, QCN is a premium performance version of the Carlcarb "ACN" grade. 5 CARLENT LENTICULAR FILTER MODULES AND HOUSINGS The lenticular module concept offers a compact, self contained, liquid filtration solution utilising proven filter media technology The lenticular module concept is available with the Carlcarb carbon range of media. Carlson Carlent lenticular filters are essentially composed of Carlson depth filter media, supported on a polypropylene skeleton and supplied in modular form normally comprising 16 cells of either 12" (300mm) or 16" (400mm) diameter. They offer all the advantages of traditional filter sheet filtration but in a totally enclosed, sterile environment, thus eliminating product loss and external contamination. They are designed to fit industry standard housings incorporating 1, 2, 3 or 4 modules. Carlson Filtration also offers a range of lenticular filter housings. These are available in 12" and 16" diameter, single or multi module versions to suit small scale laboratory or pilot plant production to large scale continuous production. These can be stand alone, trolley or skid mounted. Available in single or multi-stage ready to go filtration formats, the skid and trolley mounted systems are supplied complete with filter housings, drip tray, pumps, valves and interconnecting pipework as required. Traditionally customers would have to design, source and install all these components and then hard pipe them into their process. Carlson now take all this in house supplying turnkey packages. The advanced design of the lenticular housing facilitates easy filter changes with minimal changeover times. The secure enclosed drip tray removes the need for an additional bund wall. * For further information on this product please see our Carlent brochure CARLCARB CARBON FILTRATION FOR FOOD, BEVERAGE, PHARMACEUTICAL, BIOTECH AND CHEMICAL USE PURITY THROUGH QUALITY TM

LENTICULAR MODULE LIFTING DEVICE In 16" diameter format the weight of a used module can be unsuitable for manual lifting. This is especially true when multiple housings, with 3 to 4 high modules in each, have to be changed out. Since a suitable hoist is required to remove the dome cover Carlson have developed a Lenticular Lifting Device to utilize this hoist. This lifting device can remove the complete set of spent modules from a housing in one simple and safe lift. The Lifting Device comes in sizes to accommodate 2, 3 or 4 modules high. The Lifting Device simply clamps the lower module, lifts the complete stack of modules and these spent modules can then be discharged into a disposal unit with a pull of the discharge handle FILTER SHEETS The Carlcarb series of base structures are also available in the standard flat sheet format. These are available in all customary sizes. Special formats to suit a variety of filter presses are available upon request. The sheet life depends on the amount of colour/odour/off taste / chlorine to be removed and the dwell time of the liquid within the sheet. This is also applicable to the media held within the lenticular format. Dealer stamp FILTRATION EQUIPMENT Carlson offers a comprehensive range of new filtration equipment, incorporating a full range of filter presses and plate and frame filters varying from lab scale 20cm units through to large 120cm automatic closing units. APPLICATIONS Carlson Production Facility While the Carlcarb range of Activated Carbon media is well proven it is always recommended to laboratory prove any specific application and scale up directly from this laboratory work. Carlson can offer small laboratory formats for all its product range from 47mm diameter discs upwards. We also have a mini disc encapsulating the media offering a simple, disposable test option. Carlson Filtration can either run these scale up tests in its Technical Development Centre or assist you at your site. visit us at: carlson.co.uk Purity through quality TM since 1923 ISO 9002 ISO Investors in People DMF No CARLSON FILTRATION LTD BUTTS MILL BARNOLDSWICK LANCASHIRE UNITED KINGDOM BB18 5HP TEL: +44 (0) FAX: +44 (0) sales@carlson.co.uk
