Nordic Guide to Sustainable Materials Nordic Built kick-off Copenhagen 20. Nov 2014

Nordic Guide to Sustainable Materials BACKGROUND Need for common criteria and documentation cross the borders Need for product specific data that gives credit to sustainable product development Need for simplifying the demand process for sustainable materials

RESULTS A state-of-the art report A Guide that describe: criteria for sustainable materials and how to consider recycling and material efficiency in planning guidelines for procurement Increased collaboration within each country and within the Nordics A model and reference for work in Nordic Innovation and within EU

Partners Norwegian Green Building Council Sweden Green Building Council Iceland Green Building Council Green Building Council Finland

Budget

Time schedule WP 1 State of the art WP 2 Def of criteria WP 3 Verification of product data WP 4 The Guide WP 4 Guidance to recycling and material efficiency WP 5 Communication and collaboration

WP 1 State-of-the-art Collect experience and identify the most important barriers within this field. Get an updated overview of running activities both in the Nordic countries and within Europe An overview of excisting criteria in different tools Result: A state- of-the art report. Finished WP-leader: SGBC v/ Jonny Hellman

Content of the State-of-the-art report Governing legislation that pertain to materials in the construction industry Standards Voluntary requirement (building classification systems) Different tools to handle material issues in projects Identified obstacles Norway and Sweden have most regulations, tools and experience of demanding sustainable materials in building project so far. Finland has been focusing on emissions to indoor air.

The tools currently used to assess construction material

WP 2 Definition of criteria Harmonize criteria for sustainable products and define accepted ways to document these criteria E.g: Levels of greenhouse gasses for different materials Levels of TVOC emissions Content of different hazardous substances Requirements for waste handle. Result: A report on agreed criteria for sustainable materials and key performance indicators on building levels. Deadline WP-leader: NGBC v/ Trine Dyrstad Pettersen

Important questions to deal with Which criteria (and levels) are common for all 4 (5) Nordic countries and which are different? How should we organize the criteria? Should we define one sustainability level for each criteria or more levels for each criteria? Should we have different criteria for different product groups? Should we accept self-declaration of products or only third-part declaration?

WP 3 Verification of environmental product data of Nordic products Stimulating producers of building products to collect environmental data and develop EPDs Result: More EPDs from typical Nordic building products reflecting the Nordic production methods. Deadline WP-leader: IGBC v/ Björn Marteinsson

WP 4 The guide A practical tool to demand sustainable building materials Suitable for use in different building environmental classification system and also independent of any system A guidance to planners and designers how to consider recycling and material efficiency in planning (Fi). The guide will include: sustainable criteria for building materials a method to specify, document and evaluate products based on these criteria both single products and building elements guidelines for procurement guidance to use materials sustainable (Fi) Result: A Guide. Deadline WP-leader: NGBC v/ TrIne + GBCF v/ Jessica
