who are timberpak? Timberpak is a subsidiary of one of Europe s largest wood based panel manufacturers, EGGER and processes various forms of wood waste and recycles it for use in producing chipboard panels. Timberpak is a dynamic and fast growing company which opened two new sites at Washington in Tyne & Wear and at Bellshill near Glasgow in early The company started trading in November 2000, operating from its fully waste licensed Recycling Centre which is still set within the busy Cross Green Industrial Park in Leeds. The principle functions of the company are to source various forms of waste wood for recycling at our EGGER production sites, at Hexham in Northumberland, and at Barony in Ayrshire, and to provide companies with a cost effective and environmentally friendly option for disposing of solid timber products. As our parent company has an ongoing use for wood waste we always have a disposal option available to you, something which other disposal companies cannot guarantee. As the middle man is cut out of the supply chain we can pass these savings onto the customer. All Timberpak sites are responsible for material acceptance, sorting, shredding, loading and despatch. With the increase in landfill taxes companies are incurring rising waste disposal costs. The Timberpak service provides an alternative disposal route for all solid natural timber products that are free from any material that may contain Halogenated Organic Compounds or heavy metals as a result of treatment with wood preservatives or coatings. This disposal route offers an environmentally friendly and economical option for the customer. Timberpak operate a system which provides flexibility for its customers by offering two services: Collection service Specialist hook loader vehicles collect roll-on, roll-off bins measuring 40 cubic yards from our customer sites which are located along the M62 corridor, across the North East and around the Glasgow area. Since its inception, Timberpak has built up a professional reputation for delivering high standards throughout its operations. With this approach we have developed a strong customer base comprising of local businesses, furniture manufacturers, waste transfer stations and demolition companies. Each site operates a standard 25 mile radius collection service and we are happy to discuss any collection requirements that are above 25 miles. We are always looking to develop our customer base and look forward to discussing your requirements. Material acceptance For those customers who wish to bring their own wood waste to our sites. 3

ways we could help you Using Timberpak can provide you with practical, financial and environmental benefits. Ways we can help Potential Benefits to you Environmental Benefits Timberpak can pick up your waste wood directly from you. We accept your deliveries of wood waste directly to our Leeds, Washington and Bellshill sites. May save you money compared to your current, waste wood option. Saves paying landfill taxes (the standard rate is now 56 per tonne rising to 64 per tonne in April 2012). May be more convenient for you. We can process quality post consumer waste wood (not high in contaminents) through our timber recycling plant in Hexham and Barony. As the wood is drier than virgin fibre it requires less energy to dry and process and thus reduces CO 2. Recycling wood, rather than burning or sending it to landfill represents better utilisation of the raw materials. Using recycled timber means that less virgin fibre is required, thus helping the environment. Even if we can t use all of your waste wood (for recycling and using in particleboard production) we can still collect, grade and deliver to the most appropriate source. (MDF would be an example of waste wood that we cannot utilise, but could sort for you). Takes away the headache of having to find sources to take your waste wood. It may save you money compared to your current source. This ensures that waste wood is processed and disposed of in the most environmentally friendly manner, by those services best able to handle it. 4

WAYS WE VE BEEN ABLE TO HELP OTHER CUSTOMERS From waste transfer stations to builders merchants we provide an invaluable service to a wide range of customers. Well established kitchen furniture manufacturer Paula Rosa uses Timberpak to collect their process off-cuts, as well as bearers and cover boards. Lee Golby, Environment, Health & Safety Manager at Paula Rosa: Before the agreement with Timberpak our wood waste was primarily sent to landfill (61 tonnes of solid wood waste per month on average). The main advantage is that it reduces our reliance on landfill, but it also is a very visual exercise, from the storage of the return material to loading it onto the vehicle it gives the operators and management visibility over what waste we are actually producing and allows us to challenge that waste. Against current landfill costs we can save up to 72% on the disposal charge of the waste wood by sending it to Timberpak. Decorpanel are a North East distributor and processor of wood based panel products, a large percentage of which is supplied by egger uk: We create up to 50 tonnes of wood waste weekly and burn as much as possible to heat our factory, but we are unable to burn all of the waste produced. We previously sent the waste to landfill Waste wood from Paula Rosa for collection in 40 cubic meter skips which were starting to cost between each. We now put our waste into self made wooden crates and deliver them to Timberpak s site at the egger hexham factory.to deliver a full 26 tonne wagon load now costs us which has shown us a substantial saving of around 300 per load.we took a few weeks to adjust to making crates, but have now been operating this system for 4 months and are very happy with the outcome. Testimonials BWS are a skip hire and waste management recycling company based in Leeds. We have dealt with EGGER UK (Timberpak) since August 2008 for the recycling of all timber products received at our waste disposal centre. We dispose of thousands of tonnes of timber every year and we needed a company that was friendly, easy to work with and also committed to the environment. We look forward to a long and continuing business association and will carry on to a recommended Timberpak to other companies in the future. LSS Waste Management have established a good working relationship with Egger over the years, they provide excellent customer service with a reliable and professional service, they are cost effective and are always accommodating to our requirements. Their close proximity enables us to help contribute towards reducing our carbon footprint and ultimately in recycling timber. We would not hesitate in recommending the services of Egger. 5

RE-USE AND RECYCLE Producing waste is a fact of life. However, how that waste is managed and what we do with it is something which can be controlled. Managing waste in a sustainable way, optimising recycling and re-use, as well as limiting production, forms part of Government policy to protect the environment. Indeed, the waste hierarchy diagram (right) shows that sending timber waste to landfill should be the last option. Not only is it increasingly expensive but re-use and recycling are much more sustainable methods. Most favoured options Least favoured options Prevention Minimisation Re-use Recycling Energy recover Dispose Furthermore, re-using and recycling wood is a better option than burning it for energy production. Pure electricity generation from heat is an extremely inefficient and wasteful use of an increasingly scarce resource with efficiencies only ranging from %. Processing wood, such as in chipboard production, on the other hand locks carbon away for the lifetime of the product and adds value to the wood. And that energy can be recovered after the products have reached the end of their useful life. Timberpak is the only timber recycling company which is owned by a wood panel manufacturer, so you can be assured that choosing us for your disposal makes a positive and sustainable contribution. EGGER ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES With a Group turnover of approximately 1 billion and with over 5,500 employees EGGER is one of Europe s leading wood based companies. The wood waste sourced by Timberpak is delivered to EGGER UK s Hexham and Barony plants for processing in the recycling plant prior to use in the production of chipboard panels. Following the investment of 110 million into the new particleboard production plant at Hexham in 2007 significant environmental benefits have resulted from the project: Recycling capacity doubled. This has provided even better grading and ensures that the recycled timber we use is clean, free of contaminants and results in a board which is easier for our customers to process. Bio-energy plant reduces our reliance on fossil fuels (reduced from 56.1 % to 29.5 %). Sustainable Urban Drainage System which is the type of system advocated by the Environment Agency. The most advanced filtration WESP in the industry which means that our emmissions easily surpass legal requirements. Lower density board (whilst maintaining required board performance standards) means a reduction in weight and better utilisation of transport. In January 2011 we invested a further 8 million to provide Barony with a recycling plant. Additionally: At the end of April 2009 we completed a further 4m investment into our timber recycling process at Hexham. EGGER continues to be FSC & PEFC certified. 6

from the tree to the product a closed cycle Egger chipboard facility Timberpak We count on fully integrated locations. There, wood is initially used materially. This extends from the solid wood production in the sawmill, up to the production of wood-based materials such as laminate floorings. Wood residues and recycled wood that cannot be used in production is utilised as thermal fuel in our biomass power plant to generate energy for production. We therefore optimise our use of the resource wood to protect our climate. We have incorporated all the processes of our philosophy into our ecological cycle.
