1 INDEPENDENT POWER GENERATION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA: -- The 7 th Optimisation of Industrial Boilers (OIB) -- Two-day Workshop for (i) New IPP Developments and (ii) Currently Operating Industrial Plants Announcement and Call for participation 2 CPD POINTS HOSTED BY: The Fossil Fuel Foundation DATE: 29 and 30 July 2015 VENUE: Glen Hove Conferencing, 52 Glenhove Road, Melrose, Johannesburg OBJECTIVES This two-day Workshop event aims to provide a forum for the sharing and delivery of vital information for both currently operating boilers, kilns and furnaces and also for future Independent Power Producers (IPPs) who are rapidly increasing in interest and number, both in South Africa and in neighbouring countries. Considerable challenges face both sectors. DAY 1 - WORKSHOP FOR THE FUTURE OF INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCTION (IPPs): THE USE OF CFBC OR PC FOR POWER GENERATION USING SOUTHERN AFRICA COALS INTRODUCTION: With the opening up of the power generating economy to independent power producers, a number of new developments are underway in the 100 MW or more size range. Of concern to some operators is the need to establish which technologies will be the most effective for coals in this Southern African region. The first part of this two-day event, Day 1, is dedicated to a workshop in which experiences in the qualities and use of the coals of the region will take place, along with technical discussions on comparisons between the key coal-fired technologies under review fluidised bed (FBC) and pulverised coal (PC). A detailed question and answer panel session will provide attendees with the opportunity to discuss a range of topics pertinent to their projects and coals with local and international experts in the field. OUTLINE OF DAY 1 PROGRAMME Overview of coal resources in the region - South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe Unique qualities and combustion characteristics of Southern African coals Cradle-to-grave concepts in designing IPPs with relevant environmental aspects Experiences in FBC and PC combustion and gasification for process steam and power generation

2 Panel Discussion: How to approach the use of Southern African coals for use in future independent power production: DAY 2 - WORKSHOP ON CURRENTLY OPERATING INDUSTRIAL BOILERS, KILNS AND FURNACES IN A CARBON-CONSTRAINED ENVIRONMENT: INTRODUCTION: South Africa faces impending emissions reduction legislation (including the carbon tax and carbon footprint inventory) and reducing qualities of coal on the inland market for use in currently operating industrial boilers, kilns and furnaces. Against this background, it is vital that all coal-fired plant now in operation consider cleaner coal technologies (CCT) or face severe carbon penalties as soon as Day 2 of this two-day event will therefore present a range of CCT issues to consider including increasing efficiency, stricter environmental controls, co-firing, co-generation and hybridisation. OUTLINE OF DAY 2 PROGRAMME: An overview of coal qualities on the inland market An overview of impending air quality legislation Methods to increase efficiency in plant operations, Retrofitted technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and SOx and NOx) for industrial scale boilers, kilns and furnaces Alternative sources of fuel including biomass, municipal waste and other "opportunity fuels". Experiences in co-firing, co-generation and hybridisation WHO SHOULD ATTEND Producers, marketers, traders of coal, gas and biomass Power, process and heat generation managers, engineers and technologists Metallurgical ore processing, reduction and smelting managers, engineers and technologists Boiler, kiln, furnace and gasifier manufacturers and operators Suppliers of ancillary equipment including on-line analyses, mills, crushers, ash handling and emissions monitors Traders and marketers of coal and biomass; local, regional and export Environmental scientists and engineers Government legislators and policy makers Technologists, consultants, researchers and academics TECHNICAL COMMITTEE Brian North CSIR (Chairman) Mike Andrews OEN Enterprises Peter McIntyre John Thompson David Brook Babcock Engineering Lourens Erasmus Consultant Jeremy Kirsch - Clyde Bergemann Thomas Roos CSIR Richard Wermuth Carbon Energy CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The format of the Workshops will be structured deliveries of presentation with ample time for discussion and a panel session for questions, answers and debate.
