Environmental Studies Program Pat Roscigno, PhD, Chief Environmental Studies Section Gulf of Mexico Region

Environmental Studies Program GOALS Establish the information needed for assessment and management of environmental impacts Predict impacts on the marine biota; and Monitor human, marine, and coastal environments 9/8/2016 Environmental Studies Program 2

9/8/2016 Environmental Studies Program 3

Pollutant Transport, Atmospheric Dynamic Monitoring and Modeling The fundamental goal is to better understand the transport, transitions, and transformation of pollutants, particularly in coastal areas, and then enhance their prediction using long- and short-range models.

Flower Garden Banks Long-Term Monitoring * 40-Year History of Measurements * East Flower Garden Bank West Flower Garden Bank Example Metrics: Sclerochronology, Lateral growth, Coral cover and health surveys, Fish/ sea urchin/lobster surveys, Water quality

GoMMAPPS Structure Steering Committee Lead: Pat Roscigno Purpose: Committee of upper managers to steer program priorities, make commitments of assets at a high level, and coordinate across agencies. Science Team Lead: Rebecca Green Purpose: Team of science reps to provide review and integration of science plans and recommendations for program implementation. Purpose: Working groups to develop science needs, methodology, survey designs, and performance metrics.
