SUSTAINABLE CARPET STANDARDS ECOBUILD MARCH 2010 KATE BURNETT

Types of Standards Advantages Some common standards explained SUSTAINABLE CARPET STANDARDS Carpet Standards as part of the bigger construction picture Future trends in sustainable standards

TYPES OF SUSTAINABLE STANDARDS Type I Voluntary Eco labels Specific Environmental Criteria Voluntary Third Party verified Type II self declared environmental claim e.g. Recycled content, recyclable ISO 14021:2001 provides standard usage for terms and claims Claims should be single issue, verifiable Type III LCA approach Based on ISO 14041, Quantified environmental data Cradle to gate or Cradle to grave e.g. BRE Environmental Profiles

ADVANTAGES OF THIRD PARTY STANDARDS Manufacturers gain credibility for their claims Specifiers & Purchasers gain assurance Clearer comparisons of performance Competitive advantage results Market driven improvements on environmental parameters & performance

MULTIPLE STANDARDS Why so many? Geographic bias Differing stakeholder groups Emphasis on different attributes

MULTIPLE STANDARDS Why so many? Geographic bias Differing stakeholder groups Emphasis on different attributes Health, Safety, Indoor Air Quality Recycled content, Pre & Post consumer Carbon Footprint, Product, Process or Company Renewable Energy Waste Disposal, design for remanufacture Total Life cycle Impact

Life Cycle Assessment System Boundary Extraction Cradle to gate Water Energy Raw materials Processing Manufacture Use Disposal End of Life Recycling / Reuse Emissions to air Emissions to soil Emissions to water Cradle to grave

BRE Environmental Profile Eco Points Issues Measurement Normalisation Weighting

EcoPoint Scale Different scale of ecopoints for each building element, and sometimes different scales for each building type Based on generic profiles Element type 1 Element type 2 Offices Element type 2 Education A+ E A+ E A+ E Ecopoints per m2 of element

CARPET AS A CONSTRUCTION ELEMENT Certification schemes for entire construction projects / interiors Within these wider schemes points or credits are awarded for specific materials, including soft floor coverings Site Water Energy Other inputs Material inputs Carpet Certification Project Certification BREEAM LEED SKA

LEED For New Construction For Existing Buildings For Commercial Interiors LEED NC for New Construction is a green building rating system designed to guide and distinguish high-performance commercial projects. The LEED-EB criteria cover building operations and systems upgrades in existing buildings where the majority of interior or exterior surfaces remain unchanged.

For New Construction For Existing Buildings For Commercial Interiors

LEED Credits awarded for differing criteria Number of credits achieved convert into the level of certification achieved Silver Gold Platinum

LEED Sustainable Sites Materials & Resources* (up to 4 points) Water Efficiency Energy & Atmosphere Indoor Environmental Quality* (up to 2 points) Include 20% total Recycled Content Comfort Plus Backings contribute Salvage / Recycle 50% of all waste Milliken Carpet can be recycled or reused Use Regional Materials manufacture within 500 miles Innovation (up to 4 points)

LEED Sustainable Sites Materials & Resources* (up to 4 points) Water Efficiency Use Low Emitting Materials Carpet Certified Green Label Plus Use Low Emitting Adhesives TractionBack requires no adhesive, water-based adhesives available. Energy & Atmosphere Indoor Environmental Quality* (up to 2 points) Innovation (up to 4 points)

LEED Sustainable Sites Materials & Resources* (up to 4 points) Water Efficiency Energy & Atmosphere Indoor Environmental Quality* (up to 2 points) Innovation Design Process Credit SMaRT certification NSF 140 certification Carbon certification Other Innovations Innovation (up to 4 points)

SKA RATING To promote good practice on UK office fit-outs Developed in partnership with RICS 99 good practice measures Select those relevant to the project scope Determine whether they have been met Rating based on how many measures achieved Options: accredited certification or informal self assessment

SKA RATING

ECO FLOWER LABEL Type 1 Voluntary label Well established across EU for many other products Building products Wooden floor coverings Hard floor coverings Textile floor coverings Paints and varnishes Wooden furniture Mattresses Indoor textiles and bed linen

ECO FLOWER LABEL Excellence level environmental benchmark for products Aimed at top 10-20% of market Due to be introduced for floor coverings this year Criteria include No hazardous materials Credit for renewable energy use & recycled materials For consumers and public procurement They cannot require the label itself and must accept other forms of compliance

NSF 140 Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard American National Standards Institute Multi attribute standard for entire product life cycle Public Health & Safety Reduced environmental impact Energy efficiency, emissions and waste Environmentally preferable materials, recycled or bio-based Longevity Reclamation Certified to standard, Silver, Gold or Platinum level

FUTURE STANDARDS Global A & D community need for fewer systems, providing clarity Supplier need to balance investment in environmental progress vs environmental communication & certification schemes. Strong contender is LEED? Proliferation of certifications European standardisation through EU? ISO standards to be developed? Competing national / regional interests Differing emphasis on importance of criteria
