This is complemented by a wide range of additional modules and extensions covering almost all conceivable aspects of river modelling. HD - Hydrodynamics The hydrodynamic engine is available in four different sizes (75, 250, 450 and unlimited nodes). Each size of MIKE 11 includes: fully dynamic solution to the complete nonlinear St. Venant equations for open-channel flow choice of diffusive and kinematic wave approximations in selected branches options for Muskingum and Muskingum- Cunge methods for simplified channel routing in selected branches automatic adaptation to subcritical and supercritical flow Standard hydraulic structures such as weirs, culverts, bridges, pumps, energy loss and tabulated structures. RR - Rainfall-Runoff Includes the unit hydrograph method, a lumped conceptual continuous hydrological model and a monthly soil moisture accounting model. Allows any model combination in the network. Includes auto-calibration tool. SO - Structure Operation Simulates operational structures such as sluices, overflow and radial gates as well as pumps and reservoir releases with user-defined operating strategies. DB- Dam Break Provides complete facilities for fast and convenient definition of dam geometry, breach development in time and space as well as failure mode. PMS - Parabolic Mild Slope Wave Model A linear refraction-diffraction model used to study wave disturbance in open coastal areas. Also (with some limitations) for computing wave fields in coastal areas with structures. EMS - Elliptic Mild Slope Wave Model Efficient model used to study wave dynamics in coastal areas and, for instance, harbor resonance in response to linear and monochromatic wave forcing. Single grid Simulation Engines MIKE 3 has the following simulation engines: Single Grid - the classic rectilinear model easy to set up, easy I/O exchange, straight forward navigation in model and presentation Multiple Grids - dynamically nested rectilinear model with the ability to tailor grid resolution in areas of interest Flexible Mesh - maximum flexibility for tailoring grid resolution within the model. For the Single Grid and Multiple Grids versions, the fully time-dependent non-linear equations of continuity and conservation of momentum in three dimensions are solved by finite difference techniques with the variables defined on a rectangular staggered grid in x, y and z-space. Two different hydrodynamic engines are included. A nonhydrostatic version, which applies an artificial compressibility, and a hydrostatic version. The Flexible Mesh (FM) version uses a cell-centered, finite volume method for discretization of the flow and transport equations. In the horizontal plane (Cartesian or spherical coordinates), an unstructured grid consisting of triangles is used. In the vertical domain, a structured, layered discretization is used with dynamic surface adaptive grids. 22
