5 ENERGY LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES generate 66 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year. They also manage around 45 % of electricity distribution networks in Germany. That corresponds to 808,000 kilometres 20 times the earth's circumference. In addition, they manage a 334,000-kilometre gas distribution network. WATER/WASTE WATER LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES deliver 121 litres of drinking water per citizen per day. They operate a drainage network that is 132,000 kilometres long almost 10 times the length of the German motorway system. More than 99 % of Germany has a drinking-water supply. BROADBAND LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES currently supply 5.7 million customers with broadband infrastructure. Investments of 1.7 billion euros are planned up to 2018 in order to connect 6.3 million people to high-speed internet. WASTE MANAGEMENT AND TOWN CLEANING LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES dispose of 31,500 tonnes of waste every day that's equivalent to the weight of the TV Tower in Berlin.
