Established and Novel Methods to decrease Urban Air Pollutants Jean-François Pasquier 1, Enrico Geninazza 2, Brian Pickett 3

Today s Air Pollution Problem Urban outdoor air pollution is estimated to cause 1.3 million deaths worldwide per year. Those living in middle-income countries disproportionately experience this burden. Sept 2011

What is Air Pollution? There are several major air pollutants Major air pollutants include Particulate Matter (PM), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and Sulfur (SOx), Volatile Organics (VOCs) and Ozone (O 3 ). Ozone, which occurs at ground level, is generated from a photochemical reaction between NOx (NO and NO 2 ) and VOCs. Today, PM, NOx, and Ozone are the most persisting and hazardous pollutants in our major urban areas. The most visible effect of these pollutants is smog.

Air Pollution Comes From Multiple Sources Sources of Emissions of Air Pollutants Industry, including power generation, and transportation represent more than 75% of the pollutant emissions The relative importance of sources can vary from country to country But the problem affects all regions

For 30 years developed countries have regulated emission controls at their source; this is now being replicated throughout the world US10 Euro V Euro IV Euro III J-PNLT Euro V Bharat 3/4 Examples of current Heavy Duty Vehicle Emission Regulations 5

NOx treatment from stationary and mobile sources Titania based catalysts emerged as the best technology DeNOx Stationary DeNOx Mobile DeNOx «Off-road» NOx reduction into N 2 (with ammonia / urea) CATALYST SUPPORT = Ultrafine-TiO s 2000s 2010s

Control of emissions at their source has showed significant reduction, but with some limitations The European Union case: EU infringement procedures have been opened against 20 of the EU's 27 member states over air quality The infringement actions follow the entry into force of a new EU air quality directive in June 2008 EU rules aimed at lowering vehicle emissions through technical changes have not brought targeted reductions The level of pollutants such as NOx or O 3 remain above ceiling targets in many urban areas (EEA Sept 2012 report)

A large portion of the EU population is still exposed to pollutants limits exceeding the ceilings Percentage of urban population resident in areas where pollutant concentrations are higher than selected limit/target values, (EU-27)

What are the solutions for the developing economies? DeNOx Stationary DeNOx Mobile DeNOx Off-road Source control is a must but is not enough! Emission Reductions atsources with Catatalysts Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis is a Natural Process Instant reaction with organic matter at the molecular level H 2 O (Water) 2 O UV (Light) 3 OH Ti OH UV light source can be the sun, a fluorescent light or even indoor light Water + Light = Chemical Reaction O 3 Ti 1 2 O Titanium oxide Peroxy and hydroxy radicals are created These reactive species are then available to drive redox reactions to break down organic species O2+e - O2 - H2O+h + -OH+H O2 (An enzyme) 3 UV (Light) 1 3 H2O (Water) O2-4 -OH 4 e - h + Titanium oxide Source: Alcoa Ecoclean

Photocatalysis Technology offers a range of environmental solutions A properly designed photocatalytic surface can: Degrade atmospheric pollutants such as NOx, SOx, and VOCs Be self-cleaning Deodorize the air Increase hydrophilicity leading to better washability

Photocatalysis Depolluting Effect A Calculable Environmental Benefit hrs UV [NOx ]/ppmv hrs Dark Time (h) Rate of NOx removal is ~1 mg/m2/hr (test conditions:100 ppbv NOx, 2l/min, 50 %RH, 20W/m2 UVA)

Photocatalytic Formulated Materials Applications for architectural uses are numerous

Asian economies can go further than just replicating the historical air pollution-fighting model Emission control at source is a must and best technologies are proven and available However, actual and recent data shows that even emission control at source is not able to meet all the pollution ceilings expected in mature economies Photocatalytic technology is available to complement emission source controls Photocatalysis is a cost-effective and immediate effect technology to reduce air pollution in non-attainment areas
