2 STRATEGIC PLAN OVERVIEW Commerce Township Community Library STRATEGIC PLAN Establish the Library as a destination within the community and a resource and innovation center for Commerce Township. MISSION The Library will provide equal access to information, ideas and knowledge, and to promote reading and discovery within an innovative and inviting environment. Create and promote a public image of the Library as a vital, dynamic, customer-friendly resource and center of the Commerce community. FOCUS The Library In The Next Five Years Public Image Building The Library s Infrastructure Build the Library s capacity (infrastructure) to prepare for future growth. The Library Of The Future Explore the development of a new library to better serve the residents of Commerce Township.

3 GOALS AND STRATEGIES Develop a vision for the Library s role in Commerce Township. Increase access to library services/programming to create greater opportunities for civic engagement. Prioritize technology needs and create a plan and budget for expanded capacity. Research better utilization of current building space. Create a tech-savvy environment where all staff keeps pace with advances in the world of information services. Establish a five to nine member Marketing/ Publicity work group with membership consisting of staff, specialist, Library Advisory Board, general public, Township Trustees. Design and implement a branding process for the Library, potentially in collaboration with the Township. Establish a five to nine member Library of the Future work group with membership consisting of staff, Library Advisory Board, Friends of the Library, public and Township Trustees. Work with Township officials to implement recommendations from the Library of the Future subcommittee. Provide regular updates of progress in implementing this Plan to the Library Board, Township Board of Trustees, staff, Friends of the Library and the public. Develop a comprehensive marketing plan to maintain high visibility and community recognition. Create a budget to fund marketing activities. Conduct an annual retreat for the Advisory Board in order to provide current information needed by trustees to perform their roles and responsibilities. Conduct a staffing study to determine appropriate levels and position descriptions to meet short and long-term strategies and goals. Continue to transform the Library into a more welcoming and userfriendly environment. Train staff to be effective promoters of Library resources and services within the community. Establish a Staff Committee to facilitate training and communication between staff and Library Administration. Support activities of the Friends of the Library. Develop a Volunteer Program in order to support the Library s mission and goals. Create a process for determining the Library s future building needs: Invite architects to advise the process. Conduct research on Township demographics and needs. Determine funding needs and sources of funding (public and private). Explore partnerships for joint facilities. Develop a Case for Support for the Library of the Future. Conduct a private fundraising feasibility study.

Develop a vision for the Library s role in Commerce Township. a. Library Advisory Board (LAB) will establish a work group to develop vision statement for the role of the library. b. LAB will introduce vision statement to the Commerce Township Board of Trustees. c. Vision statement will be used on all marketing pieces to strengthen library image. Enhance access to library services/programming to create greater opportunities for civic engagement. a. Continue to develop service to seniors, adding 2 new programs this year. b. Continue services to ESL patrons and tutors, adding 1 new program this year. c. Provide one STEM program per month. d. Consider the initiation and promotion of community issues forums. e. Implement monthly publicity s to area schools. f. Continue monthly outreach to local school teachers and librarians at all levels. g. Explore the conversion of the former director s office to small study room. c. Investigate possible noise solutions for children s area. d. Explore re-designing circulation desk and express checkout locations to improve efficiency. e. Research hosting Library Journal Design Institute in Michigan Jan-March, Continue to transform the library into a more welcoming and user friendly environment. a. Determine needed areas for increased indoor/outdoor signage and lighting. b. Explore repainting the parking lot and improve the placement of the materials return bins. c. Provide annual customer service training for all staff in order to raise the quality of existing customer service. d. Encourage residents to take advantage of library services by promoting library card sign up activities. e. Investigate the libraries ability to take credit/debit cards at the service desk in response to patrons requests. f. Yearly, survey patrons satisfaction with library services using web technology. Investigate self reliant scanning/fax services. c. Increase self check use to 90% with increased access locations. d. Purchase additional ebooks resources to meet patron demand. e. Continue to provide and promote one-on-one computer consulting. f. Review e-book usage, and re-visit policies on reserve wait times for ebooks. g. Investigate and purchase appropriate streaming video resources. h. Add digital media lab to address the need for advanced software availability of programs such as Photoshop and conversion of analog media to digital files, with appropriate staffing. Increase staff training on existing technology (Zinio, Overdrive, copiers, scanners) b. Provide cross training for all staff on current and future technology. c. Create a staff media team to develop better use of social media technology. d. Encourage increase use of library website by improving its functionality and promoting its usefulness to patrons. Explore options for a shared position with the Township. e. Advocate for a staff Marketing/Communication position as part of future library budget. Conduct an annual retreat for the Library Advisory Board in order to provide current information needed by trustees to perform their roles and responsibilities as library advocates. a. Hire consultants to facilitate Board retreat. b. Continue education process by inviting monthly speakers to Board meetings. Timeline First quarter, 2014 Occasionally, 2014 Responsible Library Advisory Board 2. Establish Staff Committee to facilitate training and communication between staff and Library Administration. a. Work with library staff on consistent implementation of library policies as they relate to patron behavior and other patron interaction. b. Schedule and plan all staff meetings. c. Assign Staff to research Library Volunteer programs. b. Set goals for the creation of a Volunteer Program. c. Determine size of volunteer program appropriate for the Library to manage. d. Create a plan to implement the Volunteer Program including marketing, promotion, recruitment, management and recognition

Establish a five to nine member Library of the Future working group with membership consisting of staff, Library Advisory Board, Friends of the Library, public and Township Trustee. a. Develop working group statement of roles, responsibilities, goals and timeframe. b. Involve consultants as needed. c. Develop recommendation for consideration by the Library Advisory Board and Township. Timeline Jan.-March, 2014 Responsible Library Advisory Board 2.
