At HWT our vision is for a Herefordshire that is richer and more diverse in wildlife and that is valued, and cared for, by its people to the benefit of all. The Trust covers the county of Herefordshire and works closely with neighbouring Wildlife Trusts in England and Wales. The Trust is supported by over 3000 local members and manages 54 nature reserves. We are a member of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts, a federation of 47 Wildlife Trusts covering the whole of the British sles, with over 800,000 members and more than 2,300 nature reserves covering 90,000 hectares. Following the success of the new Gift Shop & Visitor Centre at Queenswood Country Park, HWT has recently opened a high-street charity shop. We are recruiting a to work alongside the Retail Manager in staffing this new venture. The successful candidate will initially be expected to work a full day s trading each Saturday and fulfil the remaining hours during other weekdays. Which days are worked each week is heavily dependent on the recruitment of proficient volunteers. For example, in relation to Saturdays, if a volunteer team were recruited and trained to a level whereby a permanent staff presence would not be required, then the would not necessarily be required to work each Saturday. As this post will involve contact with children and vulnerable adults employment will be subject to a successful Disclosure and Barring Service check. Job Purpose: To assist the Retail Manager in managing the first Herefordshire Wildlife Trust charity shop, achieving agreed income and profit levels through the efficient and effective management of volunteers, premises and stock. To provide a high-quality retail service in relation to agreed performance targets and standards, including the provision of exceptional customer care, driving customer loyalty, and ensuring the shop presents a professional public face of the charity on the high street. 1

2 Responsibilities: Please Note: All the following points are to be carried out alongside and under management from the Retail Manager Business Planning and Financial targets: Maintain the shop s income and profit potential Carry out correctly any agreed promotions and assist HWT with its own seasonal promotions to achieve agreed targets Ensure that the shop has sufficient saleable stock taking positive action to generate donations from the public and other sources Encourage donors to sign up to the gift aid scheme in accordance with guidelines and meeting agreed targets Monitor stock turn around and ensure that there is sufficient new stock on the shop floor at all times Achieve budgeted income and profit figures and proactively address any fall in income Customer Care: Ensure that the shop team constantly give an exceptional standard of service to customers Ensure the shop has a high standard of display and projects a quality retail image Ensure all customer queries and complaints are dealt with promptly, to the satisfaction of the customer and following HWT policy Safety and Security: Ensure that all statutory responsibilities are met, including Trading standards, Fire regulations and Health & Safety Regulations Hold shop keys, opening and closing the premises for trading hours and responding to emergency call out if and when necessary Ensure that all working areas of the shop are efficiently and safely organised Ensure that all premises are secure and staff remain security conscious and are following the correct procedures Stock: Assess space management on the shop floor ensuring best-selling lines are correctly merchandised Monitor the income for recycled stock Process donations ready for sale ensuring the best possible return for all items Marketing and Representation of HWT: Enhance the image of SWT through a professional retail service Maintain good relations with the public, trade councils, landlords and neighbouring retailers Staffing: Help to ensure that the shop has the correct level of cover throughout the year, covering when and where necessary in the shop for annual leave or sick leave. Recruit and manage voluntary staff Delegate appropriate tasks to volunteers and ensure they are fully trained and able to carry out the tasks required of them Administration: Ensure all administration is actioned, mailed and filed correctly Ensure that all administrative and financial procedures are followed including banking, weekly returns, maintenance of petty cash account, performance returns, and volunteer records 2

4 Herefordshire Wildlife Trust Limited Person Specification Criteria Essential Desirable Experience Experience of management within a charity retail outlet. Excellent customer service skills, with experience of dealing with customer queries and complaints Track record of meeting and exceeding financial targets and working within a budget Full driving licence and access to a vehicle AF Experience of banking, financial transactions including till work. Skills/knowledge Knowledge of retail practices and procedures including new business start ups. Effective communication skills, verbal and written. Able to demonstrate knowledge of charity retail and gift aid. Able to demonstrate proficient T skills (Word, Excel and ) /T Good numeracy and literacy skills A friendly, approachable and professional personality Abilities Physical fitness for lifting bags and boxes of donated items Self-motivated with a flexible attitude Able to work as part of a team Maintains performance, professionalism and composure when under pressure. 5 Details of employment Pension: A pension contribution of 5% of base salary will be made available on employment subject to the terms of HWT s Automatic Enrolment Scheme. Probation Period: Six months from start of employment. Training: A training budget is allocated to this post. Hours: 18 hours per week see Background nformation for further detail. Contract: Part-time post subject to a satisfactory 6-month probationary period, finance and performance permitting. Holidays: 25 days per year, rising by 1 day per year of service to 30 days, plus equivalent to all statutory public holidays, prorata for part-time employees. Benefits: Option to enrolment into non-contributory health care scheme (taxable-benefit). Travel: Travel may occasionally be required across the county and the UK. Trust vehicles will be used (if available) subject to Trust policies otherwise the standard Trust mileage rate will be payable for the use of the postholder s private car for business purposes.
