The nominal duration for each unit of competency is 40 hours (supervised training and assessment only hours supervised training, 4-8 hours supervised assessment - guide). In addition the learner is required to undertake supervised on-the-job training ranging from hours depending on the unit of competency. Where the course units are a license requirement the license is required prior to the person operating the equipment. The course is designed to offer participants the training and assessment required to meet the competency requirements of the Units outlined above. 2 Licensing / Regulatory Requirements Operating Cranes, Rigging and Scaffolding equipment has been identified by OHS State authorities and industry as high risk plant and equipment (some classes) that require training and assessment options that ensure operators are able to operate in a safe manner. Entry Requirements: There are no specific entry requirements for this course, however regulatory authorities do have a minimum age of 18 years for final assessment completion, and regulatory bodies may have other licence requirements in their jurisdictions. In addition, there may also be other regulatory requirements that need to be addressed eg. Drivers licence when driving on public roads. Pre-requisites may include the General Safety Induction (Construction Industry and any license requirements). If a participant does not have access to a suitable workplace to complete the on-the-job training component they will need to discuss with the Registered Training Organisation strategies to address this requirement such as arranging a suitable industry placement or a realistically simulated worksite. Industry placement under the relevant state/territory legislation covers the unpaid placement of the student with a suitable business that has the facilities, the range of work, supervision and training required under the training plan for the Industry Placement. In Queensland, Industry Placement is covered under the Vocational Education, Training and Employment Act 2000, Chapter 4 (Vocational Placement). Recognition of Prior Learning Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL is recognition of prior learning or skills obtained from previous study or work/life experience). Recognition of Prior Learning applications are welcome (for more information, see the Participant Information Kit with requirements.) A mandatory challenge test is required. In accordance with Standard 1.5 of the AQTF, participants will be able to gain recognition for any relevant competencies and underpinning knowledge and skills gained through experience as well as formal education programs and may apply to have those competencies recognised. RPL is offered on enrolment and available on application. A mandatory challenge test is required for RPL of any unit. Client(S) The key clients for this course are existing workers, potential new entrants from a range of industries, non industry, school students or school leavers. These groups may include: Version 1.0 August 2011 Page 2 of 5

3 Existing licensed construction, maintenance and trade operators Existing licensed unemployed construction, maintenance and trade operators Existing unlicensed construction, maintenance and trade operators People wanting to become licensed in operating Cranes, Rigging and Scaffolding Course Outcomes: On successful completion of a unit of competency the learner will attain the minimum training and assessment standards for the purpose of certification for the safe operation of the specified loadshifting equipment. The learner receives a Statement of Attainment for each unit of competency successfully completed as partial completion of the full accredited course. The RTO will assist the participant in the process of applying for the licence. Further information on licence eligibility and licence application timelines should be obtained from the RTO or relevant OHS State authority. The process of attaining a license differs pending which license class the participant applies for. Delivery Modes: The mode of delivery will reflect the following options full-time or part time delivery and assessment self-paced student-centered learning active and work based learning Course Delivery Requirements (ie) (How the participant will reach the outcome): Before a Statement of Attainment can be issued by the Registered Training Organisation, the leaner must undertake specific on-the-job training in a work environment or replicated industrial work environment and undertake a mandatory challenge test. The period of on-the-job training ranges from hours depending on the unit of competency. In addition, there may also be other regulatory requirements that need to be addressed eg. Drivers licence when driving on public roads, General Safety Induction (Construction Industry), and any other license requirements. Participants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of final assessment. In addition to this course, any person who will be working in a construction environment will also be required to meet any state/territory and employer Construction Induction requirements. 4 Assessment The operation of the equipment contained in this course is classified as high risk under the Workplace Health and Safety Legislation therefore, all participants need to undertake supervised on the-job-training to gain on-thejob experience. All practical assessments will be undertaken in a real work environment or replicated industrial workplace. A mandatory challenge test* is required in accordance with the licensing/regulatory authority assessment requirements as outlined in the OHS Training and Assessment Delivery Guide, the evidence guide of the unit of competency and the assessment instruments. To meet OHS regulator requirements a challenge test is defined as successfully completing the written knowledge test or written assignment as required followed by a practical test to demonstrate competence against the OHS assessment instrument. If a participant does not have access to a suitable workplace to complete the on-the-job training component they will need to discuss with the Registered Training Organisation strategies to address this requirement such as arranging a suitable industry placement or a realistically simulated worksite. Course rules and Course structure: This course is comprised of nine units of competency as partial completion of 30497QLD Course in Operating Cranes, Rigging and Scaffolding equipment. Successful completion of the assessment component in the specific unit of competency being undertaken must be achieved before a Statement of Attainment for a particular unit of competency can be issued. Participants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of final assessment of any unit. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): All participants must wear PPE as designated according to the course and equipment type. A list of PPE requirements will be issued to the participant on course enquiry. PPE can be provided by the RTO. A driver s license may be required for some equipment types and locations.
