Since 1988, George Derby Centre has established itself as a Centre of Excellence. This is achieved through the strength of the Leadership Team, maintaining a commitment to the Centre s Mission and Vision, encouraging creative and innovative programs and continually improving services to meet the needs of residents with complex care needs and dementia. The George Derby Centre is a community-based care facility situated in a park-like setting in Burnaby, BC. Through a unique partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada and Fraser Health, they are proud to offer complex care and services to Canadian Veterans of the Armed Forces and seniors whose needs can no longer be met in the community. Through commitment to excellence, they provide innovative dementia care for seniors with challenging behaviours due to Alzheimer s Disease and other dementias. It is an honour and a privilege to care for Canada s veterans, the courageous men and women who served our country in the name of peace and freedom, and the elder community population. The Executive Director will provide stable leadership to the organization by working closely with the Board of Directors to establish an inspiring but practical long-term vision and by guiding, coaching and mentoring staff to successfully translate strategies into results and achieve a shared vision and mission. Reporting to the Board of Directors and accountable to the President and Executive Committee, the Executive Director provides leadership to a team of professionals. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Centre through implementation of governance policy and achievement of

2 goals that support the organization s strategic direction. Direction is provided to the Executive Director by the Board of Directors via the President or the Executive Committee. As an experienced and transformational leader, you will have proven abilities to translate strategy to operations, influence and collaborate to inspire a dynamic, respectful and evolving work environment. As the ideal candidate, you will possess a post-secondary degree; Masters of Business or Healthcare Administration, and 10 to 15 years experience in a senior leadership role. Certification with the Canadian College of Health Service Executives is an asset. The Executive Director is the steward of the organization and vigorously builds and protects the reputation of The George Derby Centre as a trusted, relevant, and valuable contributor to the people and community. The successful candidate will have a credible track record of developing and sustaining a wide range of professional relationships with government, the business community, community agencies plus experience working with diverse and wide-ranging populations. 4 Scope and Key Accountabilities The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Centre through implementation of governance policy and achievement of goals to support achievement of the organization s strategic direction. Direction is provided to the Executive Director by the Board of Directors via the President or the Executive Committee. Facilitate the development of and ensure that the Centre operates in accordance with the organization s Mission, Vision, Philosophy and Core Values; Develop, recommend and facilitate a comprehensive strategic and operational planning process consistent with the organization s Vision and Values. In collaboration with the Board of Directors, participate in the development of the Strategic plan; Develop a framework and process for the accomplishment of the operational goals and action plans through the direction, leadership and evaluation of management staff; Develop and maintain effective, integrated and coordinated systems to lead, direct and manage all aspects of the facility. Maintain a management structure that clearly delineates roles and responsibilities and facilitates effective and efficient utilization of the Centre s resources; Develop a coordinated system of Quality Improvement and Risk Management to continually monitor, identify and evaluate risk and improve outcomes. Maintain the Centre s operations, programs and services in compliance with the Accreditation Canada Standards; Ensure the integration of effective health and safety programs and practices into every aspect of the organization s living and working environment to promote a culture of safety; Seek and promote the integration of Best Practice improvements across all aspects of the organization. Encourage and support participation in appropriate research activities for the benefit of residents and the organization; Develop and implement operational policy to support and comply with the direction and parameters established through governance policy statements; Provide information, advice and counsel to the Board of Directors and actively support the Board of Directors in the development of their goals, policy statements, development programs, plans and evaluation measures. Support all activities associated with the operation and function of the Board of Directors; Ensure the collection of appropriate and comprehensive internal and external data and information to support Board decision-making and to guide all planning processes. Provide regular reports to the Board; Develop partnerships and liaise effectively with key local, provincial and national organizations for planning strategies and information exchange to enhance programs and services; Ensure the organization s compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, codes, bylaws, policies and other requirements; Determine and recommend allocation of financial, human and physical resources to meet operational needs. Develop and monitor departmental/service area budgets to maintain fiscal responsibilities and ensure no fiscal jeopardy or loss of financial integrity; Ensure protection and control of the organizations assets and resources. 5 Establish fundraising practices and management of donations in accordance with established policy; As a public relations officer for the Centre, represent the organization as spokesperson and in conjunction with the Board of Directors, promote good will and cooperation with the community for the benefit of the Centre and its residents and staff; Select, develop, discipline and terminate designated management staff as necessary. Provide education, coaching, mentoring, counselling and support the attainment of individual and service goals in consideration of succession planning; Promote a quality work life environment. Ensure compliance with all collective agreements and that practices do not violate the spirit, terms and conditions set out in negotiated settlements. Act as the senior resource person for all labor relations matters; Ensure Contracted Services are obtained and delivered in accordance with the contract s terms and conditions to ensure fiscal integrity and uphold the organization s positive public image; Establish and maintain an effective system of communication throughout the Centre and to external partners and the community to build and maintain a positive image. 6 Interesting Facts The original George Derby Centre was built over 50 years ago as a rehabilitation centre for young disabled veterans returning from the war with the goal of promoting their return to community living. In 1988, the new George Derby Centre opened as a 300-bed Intermediate Care facility providing residential care to former veterans of the Armed Forces deemed eligible for admission by Veterans Affairs Canada. The Centre s operations are funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. This unique partnership is defined in the existing Federal/Provincial Transfer Agreement which stipulates the range of services provided to our veteran resident population. The Centre is named in honour of George Cleveland Derby. George Cleveland Derby George Cleveland Derby was born in Selkirk, Ontario on May 12, He died in Shaughnessy Hospital at the age of 81 on January 5, In 1914, Mr. Derby was employed in Vancouver as a Broker. On September 18, 1915, at the outbreak of World War I, he enlisted as a private in the 72nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was stationed in England from April to August 1916 and was then sent to France. In November 1916 he suffered a concussion that seriously impaired his hearing. In April 1917, during the preliminary fighting at Vimy, an exploding shell buried him in a trench and left him with a permanently disabled knee. He was invalided to England in May 1917 and returned to Canada that November. As his injuries were permanent, he received his army discharge in January 1918 and left his unit with the rank of Sergeant. In September 1918, George Derby joined the Department of Solders Civil Re-establishment, the forerunner of the Department of Veterans Affairs. During World War II, he was District Administrator for the Department in Vancouver. He headed a committee responsible for drafting the Veterans Charter, which set forth the provisions for members of the Armed Services returning to Canada and planning to re-enter civilian life. His work on this committee took him to wartime England where he was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1943 for patriotic and philanthropic work. When George Derby returned to Canada, he became Western Regional Administrator in Vancouver for the newly formed Department of Veterans Affairs. In 1946, he negotiated the land acquisition for a new veterans hospital, and in that year, the George Derby Centre was named in his honour. He remained with Veterans Affairs Canada in Vancouver until his retirement in April 23, 2018
