3 Relevance There are several initiatives developed by economies within the region, regarding the involvement of MSMEs in the use of standards, its implementation and conformity assessment activities. The primary goal of this project is to learn the Best Initiatives that National Standards Body, Conformity Assessment Bodies, Accreditation Bodies and National Metrology Institutes among the region could apply in order to help MSMEs to be more competitive and to help them to better integrate into regional and global markets. Objectives: The specific objectives of the project are: 1) To conduct a survey on the initiatives that economies could apply to help MSMEs better understand the benefits of standards & conformance, and encourage adoption of standards and services by accredited conformity assessment providers and initiatives to get MSMEs more involved in the development of standards, conformity assessment and metrology businesseses. 2) To exchange information about Best initiatives in a 2-day workshop and to deeply discuss the survey results. The workshop will be held at the margins of SOM 3 in ) To prepare a publication with APEC recommendations on Best initiatives that economies could apply to help MSMEs better understand the benefits of standards & conformance, and encourage adoption of standards and services by accredited conformity assessment providers and initiatives to get MSMEs more involved in the development of standards, conformity assessment and metrology businesses. Successful case estudies on implementation on standards could be included. 2

7 Survey: It is planned to make a survey among APEC economies to raise information about current status and also past experiences on the initiatives that economies could apply to help MSMEs better understand the benefits of standards & conformance, encourage adoption of standards and services by accredited conformity assessment providers and initiatives to get MSMEs more involved in the development of standards, conformity assessment and metrology businesses. From the survey replies it is expected to get at least 3 models initiatives which will be used as reference. The survey will be circulated on February This Project will have a consultant s support, who will be Mr. Giulio Li. Currently, he is under the process of contract by APEC Secretariat. Thank you!! 6
