2 Job description Job Purpose: In this role the WP Manager will take administrative responsibility for Aston Medical School s unique widening participation agenda and programme of activities. This includes managing the Sir Doug Ellis Pathway to Healthcare which is in its third year. The post holder will work closely with SRO to ensure the sharing of good practise across all University Pathway programmes, and to maximise the use of resources, whilst minimising the duplication of effort in relation to school visits and contacts This post will report to the Business Manager, Aston Medical School, but work closely with, and take significant direction from, the Dean of Medical Education and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of AMS. Main Duties/Responsibilities: To work with the Dean of Medical Education to further develop and deliver Widening Participation programmes that feed into the Medical School. To deliver and continue to develop the existing AMS WP programme of activity amongst students from disadvantaged backgrounds To advise SMT AMS on progress against objectives and possible future changes to the strategy To manage the school and student selection process for the AMS WP strategy, including delivering, where relevant, s to schools, students and parents To work with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean to develop an innovative e-mentoring scheme To manage this e-mentoring scheme and work experience placements in the NHS, A Level revisions sessions, a summer school and keynote speeches for the selected WP students To work closely with staff in Schools and Colleges Liaison, especially those with responsibility for Aston s Access to Health Professions activities To work closely with other colleagues implementing Widening Participation pathways within the University and to ensure the sharing of good practice Provide information, advice and guidance (IAG) to pre-entry students, their key influencers (parents, teachers, carers, etc.) and various other stakeholders (e.g. prospective employers) regarding future academic career pathways Provide s for selected students to improve understanding of the UCAS Process, Personal Statement writing, Student Finance and other key HE topics Under the guidance of the Business Manager and Head of Widening Participation and Recruitment, periodically produce an electronic newsletter for key stakeholders (e.g. schools) outlining the upcoming opportunities available to pre-entry students at Aston Provide content for Schools and Colleges Liaison and University social media to raise Aston s profile and promote opportunities available to schools Contribute to and support other activities and events organised by Schools and Colleges Liaison including Open Days, Applicant Visit Days, and the January Admissions Conference Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the WP programme and track student engagement. Monitor a budget for the WP programme. Report periodically on the budget position as required by the line manager Any other duties as commensurate with the grade of the post in the Medical School and roles and responsibilities may be fluid as the School grows

4 Person specification Education and qualifications Essential A good Honours Bachelor s degree. Method of assessment Application form Experience Aptitude and skills Experience of supporting/organising student recruitment activities. Experience of working with young people and organising events. Experience of building and maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Evidence of public speaking. It would be helpful if there was previous exposure to school/college students and parents. Demonstrable evidence of confidence and skills in communication. Both administrative background and international NGO exposure. Understanding of private and public school environment. Experience of working with all Microsoft Office applications. A good understanding of widening participation and Aston Medical School s vision, mission and value. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to include an excellent telephone manner. Highly developed organisational skills with attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and networking skills. Ability to prioritise workload effectively in pressured situations. 5 Desirable Method of assessment Experience Aptitude and skills Experience of working in the HE sector with schools and colleges is not essential but desirable. Experience of working with professionals in the healthcare sector including GPs and physicians. Experience of producing marketing material to include web content. Line management. A Masters degree. An interest in Social Mobility and an understanding of the business models for financial support. An interest in marketing and using social media.
