3 ABOUT CHESTER STUDENTS UNION Staffing Team and Elected Officers In pursuance of the student-led and democratic ethos of the charity, the Union has four elected sabbatical officers, following annual student elections. The President, Vice President Education, Vice President Activities and Vice President Warrington work full-time to support the needs of the students of The University of Chester. Supported by an Administrator, a Finance Assistant and an Events and Marketing Assistant, the Union s Chief Executive oversees the following Union activities; Sports and Societies This staff team is headed up by the Student Activities Manager, who is supported by a Sports and Societies Coordinator based on the Warrington Campus, and a Sports and Societies Administrator based on the Chester Parkgate Road Campus. The team is there to support the 4,000 members of the Union s Sports and Societies. Advice and Representation Centre Supporting our Advice and Representation work we have two Student Advisors based on the Chester Parkgate Road Campus, and one Student Advisor based on the Warrington Campus. We also have one Student Engagement Coordinator. We provide free and impartial advice and individual representation in a number of areas, including academic malpractice, academic appeals, student disciplinaries, professional suitability, student complaints and private sector accommodation. Commercial Services The Bar and Retail Manager is supported by the Assistant Bars Manager who manages operations for CH1, the Students Union Bar at the Chester Parkgate Road Campus, as well as the Assistant Retail Manager who manages operations for the Students Union Shop at the Chester Parkgate Road Campus. The team also consists of one Catering Supervisor for CH1, one Retail Supervisor for Chester Shop, and two Retail Supervisors for the Students Union Shop at the Warrington Campus. CH1 compromises a modern bar offering a range of draught and craft, bottled lager and cider, wine and bubbles, premium soft drinks and high-end cocktails, as well as an extensive pub-grub style food menu. There is also a nightclub venue which opens each late each Friday and hosts a variety of oneoff events. SU Shop at Chester and Warrington offer extensive grab-and-go food options including good value meal deals, as well as stationery, groceries and University branded merchandise. Chester Students Union is a not-for-profit registered charity, and the purpose of our commercial services is to generate surplus funds which are then reinvested into student services provided by the Students Union. Shrewsbury With an office and common room presence on the University Centre Shrewsbury, the effective student engagement and representation is headed by the Shrewsbury Union Development Manager. 2

Students face financial and social pressures as the cost of education rises and the economic landscape shifts. The increasing need to excel takes its toll and Students Unions play a vital role in helping students stay on course and maximise their potential. As our current Strategic Plan comes to an end, we want to build on its successes by creating a structure for our continuing evolution. We want Chester Students Union to be important to all of our members, be synonymous with our values, and impactful when we influence the University and drive change for the benefit of our students, WHO WE ARE Chester Students Union is a charitable organisation that exists to enhance education for 19,000+ students. We are independent from the University but work in partnership to make sure students get the most out of their time here. We are proud of our achievements and we believe that that is why students voted us the top Students Union in the North West for the last three years in the National Student Survey. As well as leading the Union s campaigns and representation, the four elected student officers form half of the Board of Trustees, which includes other elected Student Trustees and elected External Trustees. We bring a vibrancy to the campuses, and exciting ways for students to meet likeminded people through our social spaces, events, sports clubs and societies. We operate on three campuses Chester Parkgate, Warrington and Shrewsbury. Each campus has its own identity, sense of community and needs linked to academic discipline, location and demographic. 3

5 We serve our students through a range of membership and commercial services. These include over a hundred sports clubs and societies, an expert advice centre, our StARs course rep sustem, a vibrant bar, a diverse entertainment programme, Starbucks and retail outlets. 4

Purpose of Role To create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for members, which ensures a memorable experience. Be attentive to our members needs and preferences. Assess customer needs and make recommendations. Serve drinks accurately and efficiently according to set standards. Ensuring that standards of service in all areas are exceeded by delivering a friendly, efficient, courteous and consistently high standard at all times. To have a good working relationship with colleagues in all departments, maintaining high levels of communication, team work and respect. Prepare the bar for service following the established checklists for the role and as directed by the shift supervisor. Ensure that a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness is maintained by following cleaning schedules and ongoing diligence during the shift and in set up and clean down. Clean and clear tables, ensuring that customer facing areas remain tidy and welcoming. To be fully knowledgeable of all food and beverage menus, with ability to explain contents with confidence. Maintain accuracy when handling cash and operating the till and card equipment, in line with procedures. Restock and replenish bar inventory and supplies ensuring stock rotation. Adhere to health and safety regulations, ensure compliance with COSHH, food safety, fire safety etc. Observe legislative requirements of the Licensing Act 2003 and the Licensing Objectives, as well as the Mandatory Conditions of the Premises Licences. Ensure any faults or problems with equipment are reported. Work in a way that minimises risk to health, safety and security. Abide by Union policies and procedures, the charity s constitution, and respect the student-led, democratic ethos of the organisation. Carry out any appropriate further duties as instructed. 5

7 PERSON SPECIFICATION Education and Training Be a currently enrolled student at The University of Chester. Essential Desirable Knowledge Demonstrable experience of delivering excellent customer service. Previous experience in a bar or nightclub setting. Knowledge of trends in student marketplace. 8 TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE Holiday Entitlement Due to the zero hours nature of the contract, an additional payment of % will be made in lieu of holiday entitlement. Subject to the operating times of the service area, the post holder may be required to work on a public or bank holiday. Hours of Work Hours will vary depending on activity and workload. Sickness We aim to secure the attendance of all employees. Employees who meet legislated criteria will receive statutory sick pay in the event of sickness absence. Pension All employees who meet certain criteria will be auto-enrolled into our workplace pension scheme, with opt-out available.
