1 CHANGE LIVES THROUGH FOOTBALL HEAD OF EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT - JOB PACK

2 ABOUT STREET LEAGUE: CHANGE LIVES THROUGH FOOTBALL Street League changes lives through football. We do this by working with some of the most disadvantaged young people in the country, engaging them in structured football and education programmes with a view to getting participants into work, mainstream education or training. We re really good at it too! Currently 81% of young people graduating from our Academy go on to make a positive change in their lives by getting a job or going back into education. All this because of the power of football! Street League works with disadvantaged NEETs, aged years old. Our participants are the ones in most need of help - young adults with no qualifications, disadvantaged backgrounds and often substance misuse or offending issues. What programmes do we run? a) Street Football Street Football is our entry level engagement programme which utilises the power of football to engage, build confidence and develop the soft skills of our young people. It is a 2 hour weekly intervention and acts as a feeder programme for the Academy as well as the first step on the progression path for our young people who are assessed to identify the most appropriate support required to effect a positive life transition. b) The Academy The Academy is an intensive 8-12 week employability intervention. Young people take part in football and fitness activity, achieve accredited qualifications and participate in a work experience placement. The Academy is designed to accelerate progression into jobs, mainstream education & training while also utilising benefits only available in team based situations to positively impact on the life choices that our young people make. c) Graduate League The Graduate League is our aftercare service. Participants who have progressed from Street Football and the Academy are invited back to regular events where they take part in football and fitness activity. Progressions staff engage participants in discussion to confirm that they are sustaining their place in employment, education or training and provide support in their early months in employment, education or training. From 12/13 graduates will be tracked for up to 12 months following our intervention. 2

3 ABOUT STREET LEAGUE: CHANGE LIVES THROUGH FOOTBALL WHERE DO WE WORK? Street League is currently located within 7 UK city hubs London, Glasgow, Manchester, Nottingham, Liverpool, Tees Valley and Edinburgh (and about to open in Birmingham and Leeds) with around 100 academies running every year, our current delivery reaches 21 local authorities and we have current capacity to deliver within a further 19 authorities. Open College Network and Scottish Qualifications Authority accreditation status also enables Street League to deliver a range of sub contracted services on behalf of Further Education Colleges and Education departments across the United Kingdom. The Need Street League works with disadvantaged NEETs, aged years old, because this is where the need for its service is greatest: Youth unemployment has been rising, and is currently at crisis levels. Current figures show that 1 in every 5 young people are unemployed. That s over one million young people in the UK today. Unemployment has a negative impact on people no matter what their age, but it has a particularly negative impact on young people. Furthermore, the damage is not temporary; the evidence suggests it does permanent damage to future employment and earnings potential. When people are unemployed at a young age: They are more likely to be unemployed and welfare-dependent later in life; with the average young unemployed person spending an extra 2 months per year out of work by their late twenties through the scarring effects of youth unemployment. Their mental and physical health will be negatively affected. They are also more likely to get involved in anti-social activity. There is evidence of a longer-term structural problem in that, even when the economy was growing strongly over the past decade and more, a minority of young people (roughly 7-9%, disproportionately the most disadvantaged) were reaching the age of 16 and becoming long-term NEET - highlighting the need for Street League s services during periods of both recession and growth (ACEVO report Youth Unemployment: The Crisis We Cannot Afford ) 3
