Job Description Job Grade: Management and Specialist Grade 7 Job Purpose STEMLab is a state-of-the-art learning facility for our students covering most of the Science and Engineering disciplines on campus. The STEMlab Manager role will work closely with colleagues from the five Schools that will predominantly use the new facility, namely: The Wolfson School, The School of Science, the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering (AACME), the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS) and the School of Civil and Building Engineering. This is a senior technical supervisory role with responsibility for the operation of a major new laboratory teaching facility. Direct line management of most of the technical staff will remain with the Schools, however, this role will have significant day to day responsibility for working with the technical teams and allocating tasks where necessary. The post holder will hold responsibility and delegated authority to co-ordinate staff and activities in STEMLab effectively in response to demands arising on a day to day basis, in liaison with the Operations Managers. The role will also have direct line management responsibility for certain staff within the facility. The purpose is to establish and maintain best practice in the management of the facility, including the forward planning and optimum utilisation of rooms, materials, equipment and other technical resources, and to assist in ensuring a safe environment for all. Job Duties and Responsibilities The care and maintenance of the STEMLab facility to best support the undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes taught there. Establishing and implementing best practice in the management of the facilities including forward planning of the effective usage of rooms, materials, equipment, technical staff and the management of laboratory and workshop finance, asset control, purchasing and stock level issues. Providing specialist technical advice and assistance to academic staff, technical staff, administrative staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students and postgraduate research staff. The post holder will be the first point of contact for queries from academic staff engaged in teaching in STEMLab, so will need to develop knowledge and understanding of the diverse teaching activities taking place in the facility, especially in order to manage risk. The postholder will engage in teaching delivery where appropriate, the capacity for this will increase as the facility develops. Liaising with other University Schools/Professional Services and outside contractors with regard to the layout, installation, modification, upgrading, repairing and maintenance of buildings, plant and equipment. Maintaining records of systems, processes and procedures to ensure compliance with statutory legislation and the University s own insurance requirements. Copyright Loughborough University. 2 To act as STEMLab contact for colleagues in the University s Facilities Management department, external contractors and industrial sponsors with regard to space, minor capital works, equipment maintenance and alterations or refurbishment. To act as STEMLab contact for colleagues in University Schools/Professional Services in respect of timetabling, student recruitment, marketing, advancement and widening participation activity as appropriate. Health & Safety To take the lead responsibility for Health & Safety within STEMLab, reporting through to the relevant School Health & Safety Committees, where ultimate accountability lies. Undertaking a leading role to further develop established Safety Legislation and Risk Management procedures and compliance across the facility. Ensuring that a safe working environment is maintained at all times through compliance with Health and Safety at Work legislation and the University s Operational Procedures. Acting as the STEMLab Safety Officer, conducting timely internal audits and coordinating the activities of relevant staff and Fire Marshals. Specifically to audit procedures relevant to the STEM disciplines such as Risk assessment, CoSHH assessment and Bio related safety procedures. To take lead responsibility for sustainability activity within STEMLab including compliance with the University s sustainability charter and identifying opportunities to develop and implement sustainable working practices within the laboratory environment. Human Resources The day-to-day supervision of technicians, teaching laboratories, workshops, plant and equipment. Identifying and providing training in order to develop and maximise the potential of technical staff. To anticipate and manage HR issues relating to technical staff, working with the Operations Managers as appropriate. To assist the Operations Manager in the recruitment of technical staff including the preparation of job descriptions, short listing and interviewing of candidates and the induction of new staff. To assist the Operations Managers with the allocation of resources within STEMLab in response to changes in workload, staff shortages or reorganisation. 3 Organisational Responsibility Reports to the Operations Manager in the School of AACME (Direct Line Manager). Will work in collaboration with Operations Managers in all the relevant Schools, namely, The Wolfson School, The School of Science, the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering (AACME), the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS) and the School of Civil and Building Engineering. To support the STEMLab Operational Board comprised of the PVCT, Deans and Operations Managers of the above named Schools Responsible for: Directly responsible for STEMLab technical staff. Indirectly responsible for technical staff working within STEMLab, coordinating with the relevant Operations Manager. Demonstration of the ability to promote a risk based approach to health and safety management. Skills and abilities Training Qualifications The ability to lead and manage a large team. Possess excellent interpersonal communication and literacy skills. Extensive knowledge of STEM principles and experimental practices. Advanced understanding and management of current Health and Safety legislation, Environment and Sustainability legislation and best practice, Risk Management, DSEAR and COSHH regulations. Ability to work proactively with efficiency, accuracy and to deadlines. To be able to prioritise workload and work under own initiative. High level of flexibility and dependability. Proven IT skills including Word, Excel, Outlook ( ) and Power Point. Be willing to adopt new procedures as and when required. Be prepared to undertake further training both internally and externally. Conditions of Service The position is FULL TIME and OPEN-ENDED. Salary will be on Management and Specialist Grade 7 ( 39,324-46,924 per annum), at a starting salary to be confirmed on offer of appointment.
