1 ROLE DESCRIPTION Date of Last Review: May 2014 Title Electrician Incumbent LOCATION Branch and Section Operations - Engineering Geographical Location Antarctica Reports to Engineering Supervisor Manager Once Removed Title General Manager Base Operations & Logistics CONTEXT Antarctica New Zealand operates in a hazardous environment where the management of safety and risk are critical to achieving the New Zealand Antarctic programme. High standards of environmental care and responsibility are required in all our work. Plant and equipment that form the life support systems are mission critical to Antarctica New Zealand s ability to maintain a continuing presence in Antarctica. Maintaining the electrical aspects of these items forms the principal accountabilities of the Electricians role. Key challenges for this role are: The diverse range of equipment and plant required to support Antarctica New Zealand s interests in Antarctica. Cross functional relationships between other groups to deliver a successful and efficient programme. The ability to perform the role to a high standard whilst striving to protect and minimize impacts on the environment. WORK ENVIRONMENT Critical Work Environment Issues Antarctica This role will require the incumbent to travel to Antarctica and adhere to the appropriate health, safety and environmental requirements. The location may place pressure on both the physical and mental well-being of the incumbent, the incumbent s family and other close relationships. ROLE PURPOSE To maintain and upgrade the electrical aspects of Antarctica New Zealand s assets in Antarctica to meet operational objectives and ensure that all electrical systems and work meets current New Zealand Electrical standards. 2 ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES Areas of Accountability Health Safety and Environment Recognize and adheres to the Health & Safety and Environmental management systems. Makes Health & Safety improvement suggestions. Actively participates in Health & Safety discussions. Incidents and near-misses are reported promptly. Hazards are identified and recommendations given where applicable. Workplace area reviews are completed every 6 months to identify hazards. PPE is worn at all times when required. Life Support Systems All work promotes a culture of environmental stewardship and awareness of reducing impacts in NZ and Antarctica. Maintains safe work areas. Maintains the powerhouse switchboards and associated controls. Maintains the electrical components and contributes to the operation of the Ross Island Wind Energy system. Maintains the electrical reticulation and distribution system. Maintains the electrical aspects of the- diesel generating plant water production plant All maintenance and project work is performed with Health & Safety as first priority. Challenges the unsafe or compromised acts of others. Stakeholder feedback indicates a focus on Health, Safety and Environment issues. Work areas are consistently kept in a tidy and non hazardous state. All work is completed in accordance to the current issue of the NZ Electricity Regulations. Regular inspections and servicing occur as per maintenance schedules. Ensures all plant functions as per operations manuals and desk files. Role Description Electrician Page 2 of 6

3 Areas of Accountability wastewater treatment plant fuel storage and distribution system heating and ventilation building management system Temperature controlled storage facilities. Maintains all alarms associated with the engineering plant and equipment. Ensures all plant is electrically safe. Updates electrical as built drawings as changes occur. Displays competent diagnostic skills. Reports any faults/concerns to the Engineering Supervisor. General Electrical Support Performs electrical repairs and inspections as requested. Provides electrical skills for discrete projects. Follows set maintenance programmes. Preparation of electrical items for deployment into remote locations. Completes ad hoc repairs in a timely manner. Electrical appliance inspections occur and equipment is tagged. All equipment is electrically safe. All work is completed in accordance to NZ electrical regulations. Accurately interprets drawings Provides advice and input into design as required. Completes the electrical component of discrete project work as requested. Scheduled maintenance activities are completed as they arise. Raises and completes job records in the maintenance management system. Discrete maintenance programmes are completed on schedule. Items from allocation sheets are staged and secure. Instruction and advice provided to users of equipment being deployed demonstrating correct operation and set up. Role Description Electrician Page 3 of 6

4 Areas of Accountability Portable generators are all tested before deployment. General Duties Maintains fire protection systems, this includes- Breathing Apparatus Fire Detection (alarms) Sprinkler systems Fire extinguishers Provide support to field groups. Completes weekly inspections and tests. All systems fully functional and operate as designed. All fire extinguishers are tagged showing inspection dates. Assists with establishment of field camps as required. Maintains storage areas and stock. Applies electrical skills in field situations in regards to maintenance and repairs. Storage areas are organised and stock rotation occurs. Advises Engineering Supervisor when minimal stock levels are reached. Hazardous Chemicals handling Follows set procedures for handling all goods and ensures that they are stored in the correct locations. Records and Manuals Maintains and updates records. Desk files are updated annually. Input into monthly reports as requested. Technical manuals are readily available. As built drawings are updated. Displays a competent level of computer skills using Excel and Word. Team Leadership and Team Membership Develops and participates in high performing teams Applies Antarctica New Zealand Leadership model effectively. Contributes to knowledge sharing by creating and maintaining documents in Sharepoint. Demonstrates use and understanding of the leadership model and associated tools. MINIMUM CAPABILITY NECESSARY TO WORK TO ROLE CAPABILITY AREA Knowledge and Skills DESCRIPTION Have a New Zealand Electrical Trade Certification or equivalent. Hold a New Zealand Electrical Certificate of Registration. Hold a current electrical practicing license. Have at least five years post qualification experience in a commercial/industrial environment. 6 Demonstrates a sound knowledge of Microsoft computer and programmable logic applications (with BMS & Asset Management systems experience desirable). Have strong diagnostic and repair skills. Hold a current full class 1 New Zealand drivers license and is an experienced user of manual vehicles. Hold current First Aid certificate (St John s workplace or equivalent). Emotional Intelligence Valuing work of role Be certified as medically fit for Antarctic employment by Antarctica New Zealand s Medical Assessor. Prosess the personal qualities required to fit in socially and professionally with a diverse range of people. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively without direct supervision. Have excellent communication skills. Show commitment and passion for New Zealand s work in Antarctica. Value attention to detail.
