1 COURSE SYLLABUS & OUTLINE Course Title: Quarter: Instructor: Meeting Times: Location: Office Hours: Finance for Human Resource Management Professionals UCLA Extension Course # Units Fall 2011 Phil Ray 6:30-9:30 pm UCLA 6pm day of class Course Description: To be a successful business partner with management, the human resources professional needs to understand, apply and manage the financial aspects of his/her HR function, as well as determine the impact of the employee on the organization s bottom line. Emphasis is placed on ways the HR practitioner can contribute to a company's financial Through lecture, exercises, discussion, homework and reading, this 12-meeting course provides HR practitioners with the tools and information to understand the cost of the HR functional area(s) for which s/he is responsible. To build financial acumen for HR professionals, typical company financial statements are examined, especially the Income Statement and the Balance Sheet. Other major areas of study are the application of financial principles to HR metrics, budgeting and payroll. Attention is placed on business vocabulary to enable improved HR communications with management.

2 Goals & Objectives: HR Professionals learn and apply basic business financial information to their business setting. Enable them to understand the business they are in, the cost drivers, how HR can contribute to business, metrics to measure that, and strategies to build HR s credibility with management as a strategic business partner Required Readings: The Essentials of Finance and Accounting for Nonfinancial Managers (2002), Edward Fields, New York: American Management Association Recommended Readings: - The HR Scorecard. Jack Fitz-enz - Financial Intelligence for HR Professionals, Karen Berman + Joe Knight - Rethinking Strategic HR, Dr. John Sullivan Grading: Course grades will be based on participation and completion of assignments as follows: 25 % 30 % 25 % 20 % Attendance and Participation Quizzes All Homework, Assignments, Exercises and Presentaitons Final Exam All Course Grades are Final,

3 Students are expected to - Read the assignments during the week in which they are assigned. - Attend each class. - Complete all activities, exercises and homework. - Complete quizzes, tests, and the final exam. - Active participation in class by asking questions, contributing to class discussion and engaging in group and/or individual exercises and/or presentations. - Engage in class activities as a professional business person. Please note that ALL COURSE GRADES ARE FINAL. Incompletes: The interim grade Incomplete may be assigned when a student's work is of passing quality, but a small portion of the course requirements is incomplete for good cause (e.g. illness or other serious problem). It is the student s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an I grade as opposed to a non-passing grade. The student is entitled to replace this grade by a passing grade and to receive unit credit provided they complete the remaining coursework satisfactorily, under the supervision of and in a time frame determined by the instructor in charge, but in no case later than the end of the next academic quarter. At that time, the Registrar will cause all remaining Incompletes to lapse to the grade "F". Note: Receiving an I does not entitle a student to retake all or any part of the course at a later date. Student Behavior involving cheating, copying other s work, and plagiarism are not tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.
