Use high-quality scientific knowledge and expertise to contribute to, and significantly influence, national and regional debates on water resource limits, the development of equitable allocation systems and management of land use to achieve limits. To translate and extend knowledge about the effects of dairy farming on water quality outcomes and mitigation practices and technologies into useable products and services for farmers and rural professionals nationally. 2 Key Accountabilities Key deliverables of the role to be reflected in the Performance Agreement and Individual Performance Targets Key Performance Requirement Technical Delivery Project Delivery Farmer and stakeholder adoption Budgets How we work Key Indicators Provide high quality and scientifically-robust expert advice to the dairy industry on water quality and quantity issues and be a trusted and respected contributor to, and influencer of, national and regional debates around water resource management Contribute to the development and implementation of solutions to significant resource management issues that will achieve DairyNZ strategic goals in the water resources area Utilise recognised analytical techniques (e.g. catchment modelling, analysis of state and trends) and highly-developed communication skills to build industry and farmer understanding of water quality issues and solutions at catchment scales Author and contribute to water resource management papers, publications and articles relevant to the NZ Dairy Industry Maintain a high level of presentation skills Lead and contribute to preparation of project plans/proposals/schedules for industry or external funding applications in specialist area in conjunction with other team members Plan, schedule and coordinate phases of work for part of a project or total project Monitor projects against milestones and deliverables and evaluate project outcomes Contribute a minimum of 1300 hours funded project work (full-time equivalent) Perform all project tasks within allocated timeframe to specified standard, within budget Demonstrate a high level of understanding of farmer and stakeholder needs in developing solutions to water quality and quantity issues. Ensure these farmer and stakeholder needs are recognised in limit setting and resource allocation systems, as well as in processes for managing to limits Provide specialist technical support for industry policy managers involved in regional and national policy debates, including providing expert evidence to council hearings and Environment Court where appropriate Attend to farmer, key stakeholder and internal customer information needs within specialist areas Establish and maintain internal and external networks for information and collaboration Positively promote effective communication with the adoption network and provide constructive feedback to DairyNZ Ensure that the expenditure remains within agreed budget limits Support DairyNZ values and principles: Working Together, Leadership, Trusted, Results Focussed. Proven specialist technical knowledge and experience in one or more of the following disciplines: Coastal/estuarine science Freshwater Ecology Hydrology Quantification of agriculture s effects on water quality at catchment, regional, or national scales State of the Environment reporting Water quality trend analysis Catchment and/or ecological modeling Can distil complex science to facilitate appropriate messages to target audience(s) and develops effective resources. 5 Person Specification Technical Success Factors & Qualification Requirements Essential Demonstrable understanding of water quality and water resource issues, solutions and legislation relevant to dairying in New Zealand A post-graduate tertiary qualification in natural, physical or environmental sciences Several years of research, water management or policy experience. Experience in detailed analysis and transfer of results to non-technical audience Well-developed group facilitation and presentation skills. A proven history of delivering high quality work, on time and within budget. Experience of project planning at a strategic level and practical experience of leading project teams Proven networking and relationship building / management skills, working with a wide range of people with varying needs Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills allowing interaction with people across the dairy industry. Preferred Proven specialist technical knowledge and experience in one or more of the following disciplines: Coastal/estuarine science Freshwater Ecology Hydrology Quantification of agriculture s effects on water quality at catchment, regional, or national scales State of the Environment reporting Water quality trend analysis Catchment and/or ecological modelling A PhD or equivalent experience in environmental sciences Experience of working within the New Zealand dairy industry, regional councils or crown research institutes. Proven experience applying specialist technical knowledge on-farm.
