1 POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE DIVISION DEPARTMENT REPORTS TO REMUNERATION RANGE Community Volunteers Coordinator Children, Youth and Families Multicultural Communities Team (MCT) Programs Manager Community Engagement $60,000 - $66,000 per annum plus superannuation ORGANISATIONAL PURPOSE Established during the Great Depression, the Brotherhood of St Laurence was the vision and creation of Fr Gerard Tucker, a man who combined his Christian faith with a fierce determination to end social injustice. The Brotherhood has developed into an independent organisation with strong Anglican and community links. Today, we continue to fight for an Australia free of poverty. At the Brotherhood of St Laurence, we are defined by the people that make up our organisation. With 600 employees and 900 volunteers across more than 50 sites, together we strive to help people experiencing disadvantage through research and policy and services and advocacy. As well as providing services and programs for families and elderly on low incomes, refugees, young people and the unemployed, we research the causes and effects of poverty and advocate national and local policy solutions for people who are disadvantaged. The Brotherhood is currently focusing its work on strategies to alleviate and prevent poverty for those people most at risk at the four transition stages considered critical to their future wellbeing: the early years, the years from school to work, periods in and out of work and retirement and ageing. Our Strategic Plan for identifies five organisational objectives: to demonstrate how to reduce disadvantage and increase social, civic and economic participation through quality, evidence-based policy, programs and practice to undertake quality research, gather knowledge and evaluate evidence to inform and support our work to work collaboratively and in partnership with others to influence policy and practice. to strengthen our organisational capability to support innovation and respond flexibly to changed circumstances to collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and ensure the Brotherhood supports their rights and aspirations. Each of these priorities is underpinned by well structured, researched and documented body of knowledge to support all elements of work within the Brotherhood. 2 DIVISION AND DEPARTMENT PURPOSE The Children, Youth and Families division engages with individuals and communities to empower them and build their capacity through providing services, advocacy and community regeneration. The work of the division is structured around children and families as well as young people and refugees. The Multicultural Communities Team (MCT) has been at the forefront of the migrant rights movement in Australia for over sixty years. It pioneered the delivery of services to migrant communities and continues to strengthen the capacity and infrastructure of these communities, enabling them to be active participants in advocacy and service development. This work also builds bridges to mainstream services and opportunities. As a leading part of Brotherhood s Refugees, Immigration and Multiculturalism (RIM) transition area, the MCT department works to: strengthen families, communities and their organisations shape responsive service provision learn, through its relationships with recently-arrived communities, to act as a centre of knowledge and experience. PROGRAM PURPOSE A key focus of the Community Volunteering Program is to strengthen the organisation s strategic priority of building connected communities by harnessing community altruism, building our capacity to engage volunteers and expand our services through the development and engagement of our existing and future volunteer base. The MCT has over 100 people who provide mentoring and/or volunteer support from our programs and participants. For many of our MCT programs, volunteers play essential roles in supporting program participants to reach their goals and aspirations. Ensuring volunteers have an understanding of and empathy with the values and ideals of the Brotherhood and bring this to their volunteering is a key objective of this position. POSITION PURPOSE The Community Volunteers Coordinator role will work closely with MCT staff to recruit, train, support and recognise community volunteers, contributing to ongoing programs and/or short term community activities and events. This role is responsible for driving recruitment, onboarding and development of volunteers from local communities to work with multiple programs based at the Epping Community Services Hub (ECSH). Central to this function is the identification of synergies and opportunities between programs and the implementation of creative solutions which meet team needs. This position will work closely with MCT staff, building on existing relationships and forge new alliances to facilitate new volunteer opportunities. The Community Volunteers Coordinator is an influencer responsible for leading best practice in volunteer management including engagement, risk management and compliance. To this end the role is supported and directed by BSL Volunteer Services. This role directly manages the quality and outcomes of the Volunteer Administration/Support Officer role. Page 2 of 6

3 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1. Employee Management and Accountability work collaboratively within teams to achieve common goals demonstrate a commitment to the Brotherhood s quality framework and culture by participating in and promoting quality actions through continual improvement activities provide coaching and support to all direct reports in the performance of their duties, monitoring and providing appropriate feedback in accordance with Brotherhood policies and procedures in collaboration with the manager, set goals and objectives to ensure outcomes are met model the Brotherhood values and adhere to the Code of Ethical Behaviour in everyday work practices take responsibility for managing risk, safety, health and compliance in own area of responsibility and ensure steps are taken to prevent unsafe work practices in accordance with Brotherhood policies and procedures. 2. Volunteer Systems and Processes assess and improve systems and processes for recruitment and onboarding of volunteers for the MCT, ECSH and Given the Chance teams at Epping in consultation with the Volunteer Services department build staff capability in best practice for volunteer onboarding within programs ensure work practices are consistent and in line with Volunteer Services policies and procedures manage the implementation of all systems and process changes including changes to volunteer information management via Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) database and supervise record keeping and data collection 3. Volunteer Engagement recruit, consolidate and increase numbers of volunteer mentors participating in the MCT, ECSH and Given the Chance Programs assess, improve and deliver volunteer induction further develop and implement a volunteer communications strategy develop and implement Epping based volunteer recognition activities in consultation with BSL Volunteer Services plan and coordinate mentor networking events develop and strengthen existing corporate partnerships, working closely with the BSL s Corporate Relationships Manager liaise with similar internal BSL and external projects to share knowledge and practice when required and develop coordinated policy and procedures for mentoring refugees at MCT run train the trainer sessions for the Accenture Skills to Succeed Academy (an online employment tool) to equip and support volunteers to deliver this themselves contribute and coordinate program specific volunteer celebrations in consultation with the Volunteer Services department promote best practice in volunteer development and build staff capability develop volunteer feedback systems Page 3 of 6

4 support program staff to manage volunteer workplace issues in consultation with People Services and Volunteer Services departments 4. Community Engagement promote volunteering and mentoring for people of refugee and asylum seeker background in Hume and Whittlesea at community events engage volunteers in community activities and events that raise the profile of the Epping Community Services Hub and the work of the MCT develop and build on program engagement with CALD communities, including links with local networks, strengthen and build partnerships with community leaders, associations and organisations, to raise awareness of volunteering opportunities deliver information for events for prospective volunteers broaden and strengthen awareness of the Multicultural Communities Team partnerships and networks within the Brotherhood of St Laurence and external organisations/companies manage relationships with key volunteer stakeholder groups including refugee community leadership, government, business and employer networks and services, including potential partners. 5. Program Engagement consult across program teams to assess needs and tailor solutions which cater to both shared and specific volunteer requirements develop volunteer roles and position descriptions in consultation with program staff develop systems to measure and evaluate volunteer contribution in consultation with programs, program quality and volunteer services create opportunities for staff feedback on volunteer coordination and associated needs review and maintain MCT mentoring training modules and materials provide regular ongoing support for volunteers and mentors 6. Multi-Skilling the incumbent may be directed to carry out such duties as are within the level of the position and scope of the incumbent s competence and training as directed by the manager. 5 KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Essential relevant qualifications and/or equivalent experience in development, community, social or related disciplines demonstrated experience in managing and overseeing the work of a small team proven experience in managing volunteer programs including implementation of the national standards for the involvement of volunteers demonstrated strong attention to detail and planning and organisational skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines and supervise staff through competing priorities proven experience in stakeholder engagement coordination and networking, with particular demonstrated experience in cross-cultural relationship management well developed interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build effective relationships, liaise and influence across all levels both internally, externally and with people from diverse backgrounds well developed presentation skills with the ability to present to a wide range of audiences well developed written communication skills for the preparation of reports, evaluations, and communications demonstrated influencing skills, including experience in effective change management within teams ability to assess systems and processes, implement and advocate for appropriate changes expertise and competency in Microsoft Office Programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and the ability to adapt to new software demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems and make appropriate recommendations takes ownership and responsibility for decisions understanding of and empathy with the values and ideals of the Brotherhood. Desirable capability building and/or change management experience with refugee settlement issues experience with newly arrived communities including youth program or project development MANDATORY EMPLOYMENT CRITERIA current drivers licence specific work requirements include evening shifts and attendance at a variety of different work locations proof of eligibility to work in Australia is required a satisfactory Police Check is required.
