1 Resume Directions: Portfolio Assignment Resume & References Complete a resume to include your current work site (either under employment or volunteer work). The best resumes are the ones that might appear to you to be plain. I HIGHLY suggest avoiding the use of a template from Microsoft products or WORSE, an online template. You must build your resume using Microsoft Word without a template. It is very simple. You just have to ensure that the tabs and spacing line up. See the sample resume for more visual cues. Put your Contact information into your resume by inserting a Header. This will ensure that your resume and references match in the heading. All resumes should strive to be one page. Should not include ANY complete sentences Should have at the bottom CENTERED: References Available Upon Request Reference Page Directions: with a minimum of THREE Numbered references: Your reference page should have the same HEADER or HEADING as your Resume. A note about who should be a reference: 1. No one in your family should be a reference for you Mom, Dad, Step Parents, Step Siblings, and Aunts/Uncle etc. 2. No one who is in your friend group should be a reference for you 3. Avoid using Co-Workers who are your age/status at work 4. You should ALWAYS ALWAYS ask the person if they would be reference for you AND what information they would like you to include about them: a. Example: If you wanted a teacher to be reference, they may not be comfortable giving you their cell phone number (or having their cell phone number in your references) 5. Always notify your references of the jobs you are applying for so that they are prepared to take questions about you, should someone call them. So, who should you ask? Religious leaders who have known you a lengthy time, former teachers who noticed your skills, family friends who are employed, current employers/teachers etc., people from an organization you ve volunteered for, coaches (current and former); etc. See Ms. Boyer for questions. You should have the following information for each of your references Mr./Mrs./Ms. First and last name The type of reference they are to you: Examples: Former Employer, Current Employer, Family Friend, Character Reference, Former Teacher, Current Pastor, Volunteer Coordinator, Their Company Name Job Title Designate what type of phone number. Example Cell/Home/Work Contact Address

5 Ms. Boyer s Resume Checklist Resumes must be typed Print resumes on high quality paper - office supply stores call it resume paper Keep your resume to one page Write in the active voice No: I have written Yes: I wrote Focus on these three skills - point out to students that even if they have no work experience, they should have skills to put in a resume communication skills problem solving skills technical skills Pay attention to words Some examples to start your sentences off with: assisted, implemented, contributed, organized, planned, trained, supervised, selected, earned, presented, mediated, taught, represented Tell the truth - that includes exaggeration References - this is often times not on a resume, but they need to understand they will need to have contact information for the standard three references Customize the resume for the purpose - a job resume is going to be different from a resume for a college application. Check, check and double check and then have someone else proof it Objective - one sentence that states why you're sending the resume to them and it's a worthwhile place to plug some positive characteristics. - Challenging or relevant workplace oriented classes they've taken in school. Their GPA, if it's good. o Work experience if they have any. Most recent job, what they did and for whom, list of duties (remind them of the words you brainstormed earlier). o Volunteer or community service. Stress the importance of this, particularly if they have little to no work experience. List their title or roll, what they did and for whom, list of duties. o Talents or skills they have that would be relevant. o Honors and awards (academic, athletic, community) o Extra-curricular activities - clubs, associations, activities outside of school, hobbies and interests.
