2 Discussion points and More Ask students if they know someone who works in a transportation-related job. Have students think about the number of transportation workers they see every day. Discuss Essential Questions. Talk about the reasons a person has a job to earn a living, to do something interesting every day and to contribute talents and gifts. Review slides 1-4 of I Wanna Be A... PowerPoint. Brainstorm with class about jobs related to each type of transportation. Tell students they will review transportation jobs or think of their own idea for a transportation job ( My Own Idea ). They will collect classmates career preferences, and then tally the survey results in a bar graph. Teacher Directions 1. Distribute handout to students. Career Cards summarize specific careers in the transportation field. They provide required education and potential salaries for each job. 2. Read and discuss job summaries, while reviewing the remainder of I Wanna Be A... PowerPoint. 6. Have students sort the cards in the box, keeping My Own Idea Career Cards together in the same stack. 7. Tally the results for each possible career. Create a bar graph reflecting all choices on the chalkboard. Keep My Own Idea Career Cards as one of the choices. 8. Discuss the highest ranking jobs. Read a few WHY comments. Did students select the same jobs for similar reasons LEarning reinforcement Extend the activity by polling another class or family members at home. Did the second class or family members make similar choices If they made different choices, why do you think they did It s fun to analyze data! learning extension Set up a class visit with one or two professionals currently working in the field of transportation. Call DART ( ) for representatives or have a parent who works in a related field come to class. Have students brainstorm questions for the professionals. 3. Have students cut apart Career Cards, and select the job of most interest to them. 4. On the back of the card, ask students to write WHY the job they selected is interesting to them. 5. Have students place cards in a box (shoe box or other) in front of the room. 18

3 Career Cards What career would you like to have DART Police Officer DART police officers enforce laws. They investigate crimes, accidents and incidents within DART s service area. They collect evidence and catch criminals and violators. At times, they testify in court. DART police officers wear uniforms, assist the public and interface with local police departments. Being creative and physically fit are important for this job. If you like new challenges every day and think it is important for rules to be enforced, you might like to be a police officer. Salary Range: $45,000 - $57,000 Police Officer Training Marketing Director for Transportation Most businesses associated with transportation, such as car manufacturers, DART, travel tour companies, oil companies and others, have marketing directors that communicate with the public. Marketing directors think of creative ways to excite people about buying a product or using the various modes of transportation and related services. They create brochures, TV commercials, ads and websites. Marketing directors work in offices, but also go and speak with lots of people. They are typically outgoing, creative people who like to design or write. Communication skills are critical. Salary Range: $53,000 - $90,000 Pilot Some pilots fly planes carrying people and cargo from place to place. pilots test new planes, fight fires, fly into space and even rescue people who are hurt or in danger. Pilots may travel many places around the globe and see many cultures. Pilots are excellent at following directions and understanding the importance of details. To be a pilot, good math skills are required, as well as excellent eyesight and hand-eye coordination, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make good decisions under pressure. Salary Range: $65,000 - $120,000 Flight School 19

4 CAREER CARDS DART Bus Operator DART bus operators transport millions of passengers each year. They carry commuters, shoppers and travelers, young and old, to destinations all over the city and surrounding communities. Bus operators meet a lot of different kinds of interesting people every day. They are responsible for the safety and security of every person that boards the bus. Bus operators must be dependable, reliable, punctual and able to follow a specific route on a specific schedule. Good bus operators are often friendly and kind and like being around people. Salary Range: $32,000 - $52,000 Commercial License Automobile Designer or Engineer Automobile designers create images and models of future cars. Engineers apply the know-how to make the designs work. Both have many ideas for safer and more economical vehicles. These professionals work together to develop automobiles that are beautiful, efficient and environmentally friendly. Automobile designers are visionaries with artistic and technical expertise. Automobile engineers are schooled and skilled in how to make complex machines work well. A strong understanding of math and science are key to engineering. Salary Range: $49,000 - $74,000 Railroad Chief Engineering Officer Railroad chief engineering officers are in charge of railroad operations. They oversee many workers, from designers and engineers who create railroad bridges to skilled maintenance crews who repair tracks and signals. They ensure the safety of railroads like the Trinity Railway Express (TRE). Railroad chief engineering officers pay close attention to many details and understand budgets and project management. They also understand the science behind building large structures. Salary Range: $105,000 - $150,000 Bike Shop Owner Bike shop owners are entrepreneurs, and they like working for themselves. They are passionate about biking. Owners of bike stores are skilled in a number of areas. They are good at merchandising or buying and selling, accounting and marketing. They may manage store operations, including hiring sales staff and receiving new products. Or, they may hire a store manager to help with these aspects of the business. To ensure the store makes a profit, the bike shop owner needs to select products people need or want to buy. Salary Range: $32,000 - $52,000 Retail Experience 20

5 Grade CAREER CARDS Petroleum Engineer Petroleum engineers design ways to get oil and natural gas out of the ground and into storage tanks. They figure out how to bring the oil or gas to the surface as cheaply, safely and with the least amount of environmental impact possible. Petroleum engineers decide how to drill at a chosen site. They may design or select equipment and oversee the workers who install and operate it. Many engineers work for oil companies, but some work for firms that sell equipment and tools to oil companies. If you like math and science, engineering may be the job for you. Salary Range: $80,000 - $158,000 My Own Idea Jobs in the transportation field are so interesting and varied. It makes it hard to narrow down your choices. Are you interested in a job that isn t listed If so, what is it Advanced Science Road Construction Worker Road construction workers create new and better roads for automobiles, buses and bikes. They clean and prepare construction sites for mixing and placing concrete, setting braces and building bridges. Construction workers load, unload, identify and distribute building materials to the appropriate locations. They read plans and work with designers and transportation specialists. They also drive heavy machinery and direct vehicles through the construction site. Road construction is a physical job, so it is important to be strong.
