1 CENTRAL DAUPHIN SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Plumber Department: Buildings and Grounds FLSA: Non-exempt Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor SUMMARY Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation of water and waste disposal systems. Performs skilled level duties under limited supervision within all facilities of the District. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Perform skilled and specialized duties in the installation, maintenance, repair and alteration of water lines, drain lines, plumbing fixtures, sewer and similar facilities and equipment.. 2. Plan, oversee and participate in scheduled preventive maintenance projects. 3. Install, inspect and troubleshoot plumbing systems; maintain operational water lines by repairing leaking lines, domestic hot water systems, dripping faucets, drinking fountains, toilets, urinals, showers and hose bibs. 4. Repairs and replaces domestic hot water heaters, domestic hot and cold water lines, sump pumps and sewage pumps. 5. Monitor, inspect and install regulators to maintain proper water pressure and avoid damaging lines. 6. Design and plan installation of new plumbing fixtures. 7. Operate specialized hand and power tools used in the plumbing trade. 8. Interpret plumbing plans and specifications to assure conformity with codes and established health and safety regulations. 9. Estimate material and labor costs for assigned projects. 10. Requisition and purchase materials, parts and supplies for assigned activities. 1

2 11. Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on heating and cooling systems at all District facilities 12. Other duties as assigned. A. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. DATA CONCEPTION a. Analyzing: Examining and evaluating data. Presenting alternative actions in relation to the evaluation is frequently involved. b. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. 2. LANGUAGE ABILITY a. Read: Ability to read journals, manuals, etc.; to read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures associated with assigned work. b. Write: Ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar using all parts of speech. c. Speak: Ability to speak with poise, voice control, and confidence, using correct English and well-modulated voice. 3. INTELLIGENCE a. Ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. 4. VERBAL APTITUDE a. Ability to record and deliver information; to explain procedures to others; to follow verbal and written work orders. 5. NUMERICAL APTITUDE a. Ability to interpret setting requirements; adjusts work schedules or staffing to meet necessary district requirements using knowledge of capacity of machines and equipment. b. Ability to cut rough objects to desired shape; to read measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers. 2

3 c. Ability to perceive identifications numbers marked on materials; to read and understand numbers and volumes; to transcribe numbers. 6. INTERPERSONAL TEMPERMENT a. Performing a variety of duties: Involves frequent changing of tasks involving different aptitudes, technologies, procedures, working conditions, physical demands, or degrees of attentiveness without loss of efficiency or composure. b. Attaining precise set limits, tolerances and standards: Involves adhering to and achieving exact levels of performance, using precision measuring instruments, tools and machines to attain precise dimensions; preparing exact verbal and numerical records; and complying with precise instruments and specifications for materials, methods, procedures, and techniques to attain specified standards. c. Making judgments and decisions: Involves solving problems, making evaluations, or reaching conclusions based on subjective or objective criteria, such as the five senses, knowledge, past experiences, or quantifiable or factual data. B. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 2. Physical Abilities: a. Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. Occasionally Activity exists up to 1/3 of the time. b. Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching, on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. Occasionally Activity exists up to 1/3 of the time. c. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles. Occasionally Activity exists up to 1/3 of the time. d. Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. Occasionally Activity exists up to 1/3 of the time. e. Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine. Described in terms of duration. Occasionally Activity exists up to 1/3 of the time. f. Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet. Described in terms of duration. Occasionally Activity exists up to 1/3 of the time. 3

4 QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent. Diploma graduate of appropriate trade school or technical college in plumbing with additional courses in plumbing and/or waste water systems is desirable. Five (5) years as a journeyman plumber. (Some experience may be waived by appropriate schooling along with demonstrated proficiency in completed courses.) Skills and Abilities: Plumbing installation, maintenance and repair skills. Ability to perform preventative maintenance according to published guidelines and codes. Reads and interprets complex written or printed materials such as schematics, blueprints, building plans, charts, diagrams, maps or instructional materials. Uses tools or equipment associated with the plumbing trade with expertise acquired through extensive experience and/or specialized training. Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure; to perform the four operations with like or common decimal fractions; to compute ratio and proportion, and percentage; to calculate surfaces, volume, weights, and measures. Must have normal or corrected vision, good hearing, full use of both arms, hands and legs. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, move and lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions and in tight quarters, and be in good overall physical condition. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver s License. Terms of Employment: 12-month position 4
