4 Introduction to Planning DURATION: Three days DATE: Course one 4, 5, 6 September 2013 Course two 27 February, 6, 13 March 2014 OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO: property, planning and environmental professionals, customer service officers and administration staff. This course offers an introduction to planning, including the basic principles of good planning, why we should do it and the framework of how it operates in England and Wales. It provides a valuable opportunity to improve your knowledge and skills to undertake and understand spatial planning and development management. This course incorporates all the latest changes in planning legislation and regulations. what planners do and why they do it the Government s national framework for planning submitting and processing planning applications assessing compliance with local and neighbourhood plans and policies how planning decisions are made appealing and enforcing planning decisions. 5 ENGLISH LAW, REGULATIONS, CONSTRUCTION PROCUREMENT AND CONTRACTS DURATION: 11 weeks (Monday 6 9pm) DATE: Course starts 23 September 2013 OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO: designers and administrators working in architectural practice and designers who are preparing for the ARB prescribed examinations. Delivered by a range of professional experts in the field, this lecture-based course is one of the modules taught on the University s RIBA Part 3 course and gives an overview of the English legal system, its regulations and procedures, project procurement, construction contracts and dispute resolution. The course will cover legal aspects of design development and delivery process, the building design and construction regulations, procurement, contracts and dispute resolution. the legal context of the design development and delivery process the key regulations that govern building design and construction the principles of risk in procurement and contract choice the different methods of dispute resolution the town planning and building regulations procedures procurement routes how to choose an appropriate construction contract. 6 Reviving the High Street DURATION: One day DATE: 13 November 2013 OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO: practitioners in local authorities and private consultancies, planners and economic development officers. This course is designed to address the issue of failing local high streets. It offers presentations and an interactive workshop where participants can present their own projects. It will enhance your skills in making an appraisal of failing high street, identifying opportunities and developing a strategy for the street. background analysis of current problems presentation of policies case studies on contemporary solutions and different approaches towards revival an interactive workshop for participants looking for ideas and inspiration. 7 Introduction to Development Finance DURATION: One and a half days DATE: November 2013 OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO: local authority and private sector planners, architects and built environment professionals. The course introduces you to the basic principles of how development is financed and how to assess if a development is viable. Through a mixture of presentations, case studies, practical work and group discussion, you will explore issues such as calculating residual values and look at specialist aspects of development finance including affordable housing and planning gain. introducing financial terminology and principles how development decisions affect profitability how much should be paid for a site. 8 Introduction to Planning for Councillors DURATION: One day DATE: 22 November 2013 OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO: elected members of local authorities, and is particularly suitable for those councillors who are members of a planning committee dealing with local plans and other strategic issues, and planning applications. This course, a one day version of our Planning for Councillors course, offers an introduction to the basic principles of good planning, why we should do it and the framework of how it operates in England and Wales. It provides a valuable opportunity to improve your knowledge and skills to undertake and understand spatial planning and development management. 9 Planning for Councillors DURATION: Three days DATE: Course one 29 November, 6, 13 December 2013 Course two 6, 13, 20 June 2014 OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO: elected members of local authorities, and is particularly suitable for those councillors who are members of a planning committee dealing with local plans and other strategic issues, and planning applications. This course provides a more detailed look at planning for councillors, including what planning is, why we need it, the framework of how it operates in England and Wales, and the system and processes of how it works in practice, with reference to the requirements of the course participants and their local authorities. It will also be relevant to architectural designers who are preparing for the ARB prescribed examinations. 11 SUSTAINABLE CITY TRANSPORT DURATION: One day DATE: 3 March 2014 OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO: transport planners and policy-makers. This is an interactive, small group course that will develop your understanding of sustainable city transport. Using examples from the UK and elsewhere, and involving expert input, the course encourages students to think critically about what sustainable city transport means and how we get there. 12 IAP2 Certificate programme in public participation DURATION: Five days DATE: 7 11 April 2014 OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO: local, regional and national government and public and private sector professionals and NGOs. This course provides comprehensive training for those working in public involvement, community engagement or stakeholder relations, in the tools and skills needed for effective participation. Comprising of three modules: Planning, Communication, and Techniques, the certificate programme is intended to provide a broad-based learning experience covering all of the foundations of public participation. Upon completion of all three modules participants are awarded a Certificate in Public Participation from IAP2. planning for effective public participation (IAP2 Planning Module) communication for effective public participation (IAP2 Communication Module) techniques for effective public participation (IAP2 Techniques Module). 14 Postgraduate courses and single masters modules as short courses We have identified individual modules from several of our Masters programmes that are suitable as stand-alone learning packages. These modules are delivered by industry and education practitioners and are designed to help you further your professional career. You can take just one or several at a time. Most single modules are delivered in half day sessions once a week for twelve weeks. So they require more commitment than traditional CPD events, but less effort than a postgraduate degree. Modules are weighted at 20 credits and can be accumulated and used as building blocks towards postgraduate awards. If you take the necessary modules, you may be eligible to transfer to a PG Certificate, PG Diploma or Masters course.
