Online Career Coaching Programme Module 13 Securing Your Next Job
Welcome to Module 13 of Your Online Career Coaching Programme
In this module
Our focus is on securing your next job
Some will be looking to secure that next job in their current organisation
Others will be looking to secure that next job in a new organisation
Let s start with securing your next job in your current organisation
People tend to think that securing your next job in your current organisation will be easier
Sometimes it can actually be harder than securing the job in a new organisation
Sometimes it can actually be harder than securing the job in a new organisation
Some of the positives of securing your next job in your current organisation
They know you
They trust you
You know the business
So hit the ground running
Some of the downsides of securing your next job in your current organisation
They know you
You might be hard to replace
And end up trying to do both the old and new job
Might not get as good a financial package
Assuming having looked at positives and downsides you decide
Your next job is going to be in your current organisation
What you need to focus on is your contribution in the past and in the future
Just doing the job is not going to be enough
You probably have to be contributing much more than your peers at present
As well as having a host of ideas on what else you could contribute at the next level
You also will probably have to demonstrate you can already work at the next level
For example
When I worked in the Big Accountancy firms
You usually had to operate successfully at the next level even though getting paid at a lower level
For at least 6 months
It was one of those unwritten rules
It s also important to build up the support of senior people
If you want a promotion in your current organisation
So getting exposure to senior people is important
What if you want to take the step up to the next level in a new organisation
The most important thing is to avoid what I call
The spray and hope strategy
What I mean is avoiding applying for everything at the next level
Just because you have the necessary qualification
What I ve found is that it is much better
To be selective with applications
And focus
On roles where you are an excellent fit in terms of
Experience
Knowledge
Skills
Attributes
I ve found that this much more selective targeted approach is even more important at senior levels
Does that mean you should never apply for anything in different sectors?
Definitely not
But you do need to realise
You have a greater possibility of getting rejected
Not because you are not capable of doing the job
But because those dealing with recruiting
Think their industry or sector is unique
You and I realise that 80% of business is the same
And 20% of business is specific to an industry or sector
However those recruiting tend to see it as 80% specific and 20% the same
So you are at big disadvantage if you don t have sector or industry experience
It s also important to appreciate that the way jobs are filled is continually changing
When I started out in my career adverts in newspapers and professional journals was the norm
Now online job sites and LinkedIn are the norm
Additionally
Many employers
Operate introduce a friend schemes
Building your network is also important too
My last 3 jobs in accountancy were as a result of someone in my network
Early client work when I started out in business was as a result of my network
So your action from this module will depend on whether looking to secure your next job internally or externally
If internally
Create a list of past and potential future contributions
Make it known to your boss that you are seeking a promotion
Start to build your profile with more senior people
If looking externally
Be targeted with applications
Work on building your network
Let your network know you are looking to move jobs as they might be able to introduce you
So we have reached the last module of this programme
If you have completed all the actions you should be in a strong position to move forward
If you have not completed all the actions go back and do it
As I said right up front your actions determine your results
And if you are finding it more of a struggle to make progress than you thought
Get in touch to see if working with me 1 to 1 might be the logical next step
And of course if you have achieved specific results from the programme
It would be great if you were willing to write a short testimonial
