1 JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE: RESPONSIBLE TO: EMPLOYEE SUPERVISION: REGIONAL MANAGER CHIEF EXECUTIVE PLEASE REFER TO CHART BELOW ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE: Chief Executive Regional General (Newbury) Community Health Development Health & Fitness (Basingstoke) Facilities New Site GMs once open (x3) DETAILS OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Job Purpose and Main Aims 1. Responsible for the acquisition, planning, development, opening and ongoing performance of additional health and fitness clubs. 2. Oversee fitness and health and wellbeing activity across the company, optimising performance and developing and delivering new projects and products that drive growth, lead to healthier and more active communities and improve the quality of customer experience. 3. To be responsible for the effective leadership, management and operation of all staff and facilities within areas of responsibility, always striving for growth and continuous improvement in financial performance and service delivery. 1 of 6

2 4. To be a pro-active member of the Company s Senior Leadership Team and provide support, advice and guidance to colleagues, the Chief Executive and the Board of Trustees as required. Specific Duties and Responsibilities In Relation to Main Aim 1 1. In consultation with the Chief Executive, Board of Trustees and Leadership Team, to seek out and acquire new properties, project managing their development from conception to opening and responsible for their ongoing performance. 2. For each acquisition produce a comprehensive business proposal including financial projections to be approved by the Board of Trustees prior to agreeing head of terms for any lease. 3. To ensure agreed projects are delivered to budget and meet their financial and membership targets once open for business. 4. To ensure that the business planning process delivers continuously improving financial performance and quality of experience for customers. 5. To be responsible and accountable for the implementation of the plan, reporting progress to the Chief Executive, Leadership Team and the Board of Trustees as required. 6. To continuously evaluate performance against the plan identifying any barriers to success and providing appropriate solutions to overcome these in a drive to maximise income. In Relation to Main Aim 2 1. Responsible for the financial and membership performance of health and fitness and wellbeing across the business, meeting agreed budgetary and membership targets. 2. Responsible for expanding community health and wellbeing programmes across all areas in which BST sites are located, taking advantage of funding and sponsorship when available and on a commercial, sustainable basis otherwise. 3. To ensure that the business planning process delivers improved financial performance, higher standards of service quality and the best possible customer experience. 4. To be responsible and accountable for the implementation of the plan, reporting progress to the Chief Executive, Leadership Team and the Board of Trustees as required. 5. To continuously evaluate performance against the plan identifying any barriers to success and providing appropriate solutions to overcome these. 2 of 6

3 6. To identify new opportunities that will enable the Company to meet its strategic aims. 7. To develop and promote consultation with customers and stakeholders to form strong community partnerships in order to improve and enhance service delivery. 8. To develop and encourage links with partners so that they develop an awareness of the Company s mission, aims and objectives. 9. To identify new activities and services that would enhance service delivery and realise a strong return on investment. 10. To be responsible for the delivery of such projects from conception to completion and ensure targets are achieved. In Relation to Main Aim 3 1. To be an exemplary leader and manager, reflecting the Company s values. 2. To ensure a highly motivated, effective and efficient workforce capable of achieving targets, objectives and aims as agreed by the Chief Executive and Leadership Team. 3. To ensure that all operational units within the area of responsibility comply with all Company procedures and policies. 4. To liaise closely with the Facilities, providing support as required, ensuring that suitable planned preventative maintenance schedules and capital programmes are developed so that disruption to buildings and services are kept at an absolute minimum. 5. To be responsible for developing, implementing and co-ordinating the training and development programme for all staff within the area of responsibility, in conjunction with the DBM (Basingstoke), Head of Finance and HR Officer. In Relation to Main Aim 4 1. To work proactively and collaboratively as part of the Company s Senior Leadership Team providing expert advice and support on relevant operational activity. 2. To act as the Company s appointed Deputy Chief Executive, including representation at meetings in his/her absence as and when instructed/required. 3. To prepare and present reports to Board level standard as required. 4. To attend Board of Trustees meetings as and when required. 5. To deliver targets and achieve performance indicators agreed as part of the post holder s personal management plan. 6. To represent the Board, Chief Executive and the Company at meetings, events and conferences as required. 3 of 6

4 7. At all times to comply with the policies and procedures of Basingstoke Sports Trust. 8. To act as an ambassador for Basingstoke Sports Trust at all times, supporting and promoting the Company s values and aims. And any other duties commensurate with the grade and falling within the scope of the post, as requested by Management. 4 of 6

Working in a Leisure environment Essential Post Requirement a) Ability to provide visible and supportive leadership, which empowers, enables and develops staff to achieve results. b) Ability to manage and monitor performance effectively and set clear objectives for the review of individual and corporate level performance, liaising with HR on complex people issues. c) Three year s management experience in a service or operational area relevant to the remit of this post. d) Active involvement in preparing, managing and controlling financial and business plans. e) Ability to ensure effective planning and delivery of sport and leisure based activities. a) Ability to put corporate vision and values into practice through agreed policies and strategies. b) Ability to lead change programmes, improve service quality and support a culture that drives up standards and performance. c) Demonstrate a commitment to the organisational structure and the achievement of the Company s strategic aims. d) Proven track record of delivering new health and fitness clubs. e) Proven track record of improving health and fitness businesses. f) Proven track record of improving frontline services. g) Experience of delivering revenue and capital facility improvements. h) Knowledge of and the ability to implement quality assurance frameworks. a) Understanding of the leisure trust sector, relevant issues and its governance. b) Understanding of the commercial leisure sector, particularly in relation to health and fitness. c) Understanding of the wider sport and leisure industry, including public and private sector provision, and emerging trends. d) Understanding of local government and public sector issues with regard to leisure provision. e) Experience of working on politically sensitive issues. f) An understanding of, and commitment to, sustainability in service delivery. 5 of 6

Other a) Prepared to work as and when the role requires, including evenings and weekends. b) Full driving licence and access to a motor vehicle with appropriate business insurance to travel as and when the role requires.
