Lab Technician in the area of Aggregate Quality; conduct, and oversee testing in the aggregate, petrographic, and wear track laboratories to determine compliance with the appropriate specifications. Maintain lab quality systems for AASHTO resource coarse & fine aggregate accreditation. Install and maintain monitoring stations on suspect structures. Prioritize, schedule and perform maintenance and calibrations on laboratory equipment. Conduct routine, non-routine, and complex testing as needed.

2 15. Please describe the assigned duties, percent of time spent performing each duty, and what is done to complete each duty. List the duties from most important to least important. The total percentage of all duties performed must equal 100 percent. Duty 1 General Summary: Percentage: 50 Aggregate sample collection and preparation. Recognized resource for aggregate testing. Schedule & coordinate the acquisition of field samples Receive samples, and reviewing documentation for accuracy and completeness Test sample properties according to applicable test methods, i.e. American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and Michigan Test Methods (MTM) Perform Mechanical Analysis, Sieve Analysis on aggregate sources/products as requested Prepare and perform Los Angeles Abrasion testing and on Sources in Michigan, surrounding states, and Canada Prepare aggregate samples for Freeze-Thaw testing by the Concrete lab Prepare aggregate samples for testing on the wear track Prepare aggregate samples for specialized testing, as needed Other tasks as assigned Duty 2 Enter completed test data into the relevant databases and notifying parties of sample testing status. Document workflow of each received sample Using the Sample Manager for sample log-in, receipt, worksheet preparation, test data entry, calculations and reporting of results Inform relevant personal of sample status and request additional information if needed Duty 3 General Summary: Percentage: 15 Install, maintain, and assess structural monitoring stations. Install crack index monitoring stations in conjunction with structural investigations. Maintain a database of all installed station locations with associated inspection records. Maintain safe access to control station(s) site locations. Schedule field inspections on of each station at the required interval (typically a yearly rotation) and assist inspection team as necessary. Duty 4 Maintain and repair laboratory equipment.

3 Maintain a repair/replacement schedule for each piece of equipment utilized by the aggregate unit Maintain cleaning/replacement records on dust filtration systems. Perform routine maintenance Repair or replace broken parts on equipment Calibrate equipment to meet appropriate specifications Document all repairs, and calibrations performed for inclusion in the lab R18 manual. Duty 5 Maintain lab quality systems and performing AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) and Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) testing as required for laboratory accreditation. Performs AASHTO resource proficiency testing (PSP) Perform testing procedures for maintaining AMRL and CCRL laboratory accreditation Maintain records of all inspections, resolution of nonconformities, and PSP proficiency ratings Duty 6 General Summary: Percentage: 5 Maintain maintenance records, repair schedule, and mileage logs for unit vehicles. Maintain a record of all maintenance performed on unit vehicles Schedule preventative maintenance and coordinate logistics as needed. Submit equipment hours to the accounting dept. at the end of each pay period. Submit mileage logs to the unit supervisor at the end of each pay period. 16. Describe the types of decisions made independently in this position and tell who or what is affected by those decisions. Prioritize daily work schedule to be efficient with time. Manage multiple tasks and deadlines so as to complete testing at proper time and temperature. Maintain a safe working environment adjusting set-up as needed. Daily contact with Region and suppliers on status of testing. 17. Lab Technician in the area of Aggregate Quality. Conduct and oversee a wide variety of testing in the Aggregate, Petrographic, and Wear Track Laboratories to determine compliance with the appropriate specifications. Prioritize, schedule and perform maintenance and calibrations on laboratory equipment. Conduct routine and non-routine, complex testing as needed. Evaluate new test methods and equipment, make recommendations for improvements in procedures. Support personnel in other areas with technical assistance. 24. Indicate specifically how the position's duties and responsibilities have changed since the position was last reviewed. The duties of this proposed position have expanded to include responsibility as the recognized resource for directing/maintaining the workflow of all samples submitted to the aggregate lab for testing, and tracking them through to completion. Responsibility for maintaining the lab s quality systems manual and all required AASHTO lab accreditations (including but not limited to AMRL, CCRL, annual AASHTO inspections and resource PSP testing). Responsibility for maintaining records of all field monitoring stations (including, but not limited to crack index monitoring stations) and scheduling installations and field inspections at the required interval. 25. What is the function of the work area and how does this position fit into that function? Test aggregates used on construction projects for conformance to specifications. This position performs the testing on these materials. 26. What are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this position. EDUCATIO: Possession of an Associate s degree in concrete technology, civil technology, construction technology, surveying technology, construction management, mathematics, or computer science. EXPERIECE: Transportation Technician 11 Three years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Technician, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Technician E10. Alternate Education and Experience Transportation Technician 8-12 Possession of a Bachelor s degree or higher in an Applied Science with 16 semester hours (24 term) credits in job specific or related course work qualifies for the Transportation Technician E10 level. Completion of 60 semester (90 term) credits including 24 semester (36 term) credits in any combination of course work in the following areas: structures, materials, soils, hydrology, surveying, design, bituminous, concrete, aggregate, chemistry, physics, geology, environmental science, computer science, highway or traffic technology, construction management, engineering, or mathematics may be substituted for the associate's degree. Four years of technician level experience consisting of quality control inspections, drafting, materials and testing, surveying, or traffic may be substituted for the Associate's degree. Current certification in bituminous (hot mix), concrete, density testing, or aggregate gradation and one year of related field experience may be substituted for the associate's degree. 5 1. Knowledge of mathematics for testing calculations. 2. Ability to comprehend and carry-out oral and written instructions, and communicate effectively on the telephone. 3. Ability to operate testing equipment, knowledge of tools and basic maintenance. 4. Computer skills to work extensively with a database for testing and reporting 5. Ability to work closely with others in a team environment. CERTIFICATES, LICESES, REGISTRATIOS: Valid driver s license Michigan Certified Aggregate Technician Level Two Certification. At least three years experience in laboratory testing environment involving materials testing is highly desirable.
