3 Coast to Capital Strategic Economic Plan We will be writing a new Strategic Economic Plan this year and it will prioritise the 7 themes that emerged from our response to the Industrial Strategy consultation: Investing in science, research and innovation Developing skills Upgrading infrastructure Supporting businesses to start and grow Encouraging trade and inward investment Regeneration and housing Cultural leadership and destination management

4 Digital Skills Sector Estimated 3.7bn GVA in % of Coast to Capital region s economy Grown 18.6% lower than the South East area as a whole (19.9%) Creative 19% Digital and IT 81%

5 Within SME s across all industries: 34% have no or limited digital skills 43% have basic digital skills 23% have high levels of digital skills Demand for high level qualifications (L4+) is expected to rise by 10% by 2022, and the key skills gaps identified are in: Advanced IT Software skills 3D printing, graphic design, big data analytics, cyber security

6 Areas to target Those targeted for growth: Advanced manufacturing and engineering Creative, digital and IT Environmental technologies Financial and business services Health and life sciences High employment sectors: Health and social care Construction Visitor economy Key point: Target sectors and employers that can improve their productivity through the use of Digital Skills, leading to economic growth

7 ESF Digital Skills - Calls Two specifications released on Friday 21 st April 2017: 2.1 Digital Skills for the Employed joint specification with Enterprise M3 Partners may bid for either EM3 or C2C, or both LEP areas 2.2 Digital Skills for SMEs Call for the C2C area only Call window is open for 11 weeks due to close on 7 th July 2017

9 2.1 Digital Skills for the Employed Direct call worth 800,000 in ESF funds for C2C area match funding to be sought by applicant Complimentary call under priority 2.2 referrals and synergies between projects expected Applicants will need to identify how funding will be allocated across all aspects of the scheme Target number of outputs: ID Output Total Men Women O1 Participants O4 Over 50s O5 Participants from ethnic minorities ESF CO16 Participants with disabilities ESF CO14 Single adult household with dependent children

10 Bids must respond to the needs of the C2C LEP area, thus giving the best opportunity to grow the economy. The provision must also meet business and industry needs. Applications must show: How the interventions will impact on the individual Practical support available through coaching/advice and mentoring How an assessment of the current skills profile of the individual will be undertaken and how a bespoke training plan will be created A service that will drive up skills levels focussing on the skills being sought by employers A service that will deliver innovative and responsive skills provision (both accredited and non-accredited training) A vision to encourage more women to engage in digital skills Partnership working with training providers, business support providers, C2C Business Navigators, and the successful applicant of 2.2 s specification

11 Expected outcomes for this project: Broker opportunities with local SMEs and employers to support existing employees, and new employees, to access additional qualifications in digital skills Increase participation in traineeships and apprenticeships Explore and secure progression opportunities Work with colleges and independent training providers to encourage them to develop appropriate training packages to meet the needs of SMEs in the digital age

12 2.2 Digital Skills for SMEs Direct call worth 500,000 in ESF funds match funding to be sought by applicant Complimentary call under priority 2.1 referrals and synergies between projects expected. The needs of individual employees should be referred to the accompanying project under 2.1 Target number of outputs: ID Output Total CO23 No. of supported SMEs 500 At least 30% of the SMEs should be those with high growth potential: i. 10 or more employees with the potential to increase turnover or employment by an annual average rate of 20% over three years ii. Less than 10 employees that over 3 years have the potential to increase employment numbers by 7, or an annual turnover of 0.75m iii. Start-ups with the potential to achieve turnover of 1m within 3 years of starting trading, or to have at least 10 employees within 3 years

13 Bids must show working with a number of employer groupings or skills clusters to address the Digital Skills SMEs need to generate increased productivity and innovation. This is required to ensure that the SMEs in the C2C area remain competitive and to sustain growth in our high employment sectors. Applications must include elements for: Developing a training programme to prepare SMEs for the digital world providing a combination of 1 to 1, and 1 to many interventions Running a series of SME business events raising awareness and to empower companies in key areas of digital technology (social media, digital marketing, cloud accounting, data analytics, SEO) Responding to evidenced demand of SME needs Encouraging women in the digital skills world Monitoring the results of the digital training programme at SME level Fostering an aspirational, digital and enterprising culture in SMEs

14 Expected outcomes for this project: Broker opportunities with local SMEs and employers to support existing employees, and new employees, to access additional qualifications in digital skills through NVQs, work experience, and internships etc Training and support for employers to give understanding to recruit and upskill their staff with new digital skills Explore and secure progression opportunities Key outputs: Projects would ideally look to run in close associations with C2C Growth Hub, Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Small Businesses and other networks
