1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Job Title: Master Electrician NRECA Job Code: Reports To: Director of Member and Energy Services Classification: Non-exempt, Inside Union, hourly, overtime eligible Updated: 2018 OBJECTIVES To aid consumers in acquiring safe, proper, efficient and economical electric service. To maintain the cooperative s goodwill with its members, directors, employees, affiliated organizations, and general public. To promote safe working conditions through adherence to all established safety rules and practices. To be familiar with all traffic laws, first aid, safety rules and regulations. To gain an increasing knowledge and understanding of the cooperative s objectives and viewpoints, to assist in gaining the acceptance of the cooperative as member of the business community. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Takes direction from Lead Master Electrician of record and reports to him in the absence of the Director of Member and Energy Services. RESPONSIBILITIES: Reports ready for work each day at the appointed time, properly attired. If unable to report to work on time, notifies the Cooperative of the fact before reporting time. Keeps informed as to cooperative policies. Promote the cooperative s products and programs to members and area contractors including load management and the installation of off-peak heating to members. Responds to member inquiries regarding load management. Install off-peak meters and test ripple controls. Ensures that the ripple control equipment is programmed in compliance with Minnkota Power Cooperative s Ripple Control Operating Guide. Test equipment to insure proper working order. Assists consumers by recommending steps for conservation of energy through proper insulation, building construction, and heating and cooling equipment. Keeps informed to cooperative rate schedules and response to member inquiries regarding cost of electrical service.

2 When requested, reviews consumers electrical energy usage history and explains the billing statements and helps identify any discrepancies. Provides written documentation of the work tickets completed. Reports: 1. Meter readings and equipment numbers 2. Information required by Marketing Representative to complete off-peak member records. 3. Important details that office personnel use to address member inquiries such as the cause of high usage and recommendations made to consumers. Schedules appointments with member to gain access to load management equipment. Accepts appointments made by member service department. Inform members, in advance, if appointments must be cancelled and reschedules when possible. Informs supervisor and/or Energy Conservation Representative of scheduling problems. Reports/returns work tickets that are not completed. Provides details why the job could not be done. Assists consumers with problems concerning voltage, power failure and high kwh usage. Assists consumers with inquiries regarding cooperative rules, regulations, policies, State Wiring Code and National Electrical Code. Works with G&T (Minnkota) and other RECs on load management and promoting electrical safety, and wise use of electricity. The work to be performed includes: Complete a visual inspection of the site and documenting any discrepancy, document safety violations which are visual, document meter reading, check meter seal, replace meter and reseal, make minor repairs and/or adjustments. Collects delinquent bills as authorized. Sees that all safety rules and regulations are followed. Reports all accidents to the Manager of Marketing/Member Services. Attends and participates in safety meetings. Informs mechanic of any repairs necessary to vehicles and work equipment. Maintains warehouse and vehicles in a neat and orderly manner. Performs such other activities as may be assigned by the Manager of Marketing/Member Services from time to time. Must exercise initiative, judgment and knowledge of cooperative practices, policies and organization. Reviews and signs on an annual basis the cooperative s electrician s functional job description, which is included with his/her job description form.

3 RELATIONSHIPS Director of Member and Energy Services to function under his/her direction and to assist him in a way he may direct for the benefit of the cooperative and its members. Lead Master Electrician works with and may receive direction to coordinate projects to meet program objectives as necessary. Office Employees and Line Crews to be courteous and to work with them to achieve a high degree of efficiency and productivity on the job. Members to maintain a courteous and cooperative relationship with all members and to assist them in meeting their needs. Civic and Community Groups to participate in the meetings of, to take advantage of every opportunity to gain increased understanding and acceptance of the rural electric programs. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE A college or technical school degree in electrical maintenance, construction or other appropriate field preferred, alternatively, experience in applicable field. Experience: 1. Electrical construction, maintenance and repair. 2. Electrical service call and troubleshooting. 3. Customer service experience preferred. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, memos and equipment and product manuals. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-onone and small group situations to other employees and vendors. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts. To be able to calculate and measure with units used in the electrical work and building maintenance. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

4 CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Valid Minnesota Class A Journeyman Electrician s License required Valid A Master Electrician s License preferred Valid driver s license required OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES Must have knowledge of electrical safety, circuitry, hardware and National Electrical Code. Must have knowledge of PC computers and major software programs. Must have ability to use electronic ripple control programming equipment. Must have good oral and written communication skills should understand cooperative philosophy and organization. Must develop a working knowledge of electrical energy usage requirement for appliances and equipment. Must have knowledge of mathematics calculations. Must be able to meet the physical demands & environmental conditions for Master Electrician s position. Must be tactful and capable of meeting and dealing amicably with all types of people including co-op members and employees, vendors, building contractors, electricians, realtors, etc. in a variety of circumstances in a manner beneficial to Beltrami Electric Cooperative. Must be familiar with the use of electrical testing, construction and repair equipment, and also other technical devices. Two-wheeled cart 11. Rubber gloves (electrical) 12. Fire retardant shirt 13. Safety glasses 14. Pick-up 15. Forklift SIGNIFICANT WORKSITE MEASUREMENTS: Work truck has a stop to get in of 24 inches. It is an automatic transmission. The storage bins on the side range in height from 24 to 60. The bed height is 36. The ladder rack is 66. Portable generator is 108 pounds. Sledgehammer is 15 pounds. Steffes heating unit is 185 pounds. Bricks come in packages weighing from pounds. These are often lifted from the floor to the back of a pickup, or into member s vehicle. The units are a 2-person lift when moving them around. Extension ladders weighing from pounds. Tool bag weighing up to 25 pounds. Two-wheeled cart: Handle is at 58. Force to tilt thumper on a two-wheeled cart is 30 pounds. The weight of the thumper and the two-wheeled cart together is 250 pounds. This is a twoperson lift and pull into the back of a pickup. Force needed to pull cable off a reel: Primary cable is 150 pounds, secondary cable 90 pounds. This is sometimes a sustained pull with driving the truck away to unreel the cable from the reel.

6 Hours Worked: This is variable depending on the season and jobs. May have to work between 8 and 12 hours per day. This may increase with seasonal and storm work. Breaks: Every 4 hours. CRITICAL DEMANDS OF JOB: The following information describes the physical activities that are performed during a normal workday by the associates performing the job classification. The percentages of the normal workday that the physical activity is conducted will be identified as follows: Rarely 1-5% of the time in a 12-hour day Occasionally 6-33% of the time in a 12-hour day Frequently 34-66% of the time in a 12-hour day Continuously % of the time in a 12-hour day 1. Floor to waist lift: Occasionally, lifting up to 90 pounds, when lifting Steffes heating units, as well as lifting bricks occasionally weighing up to 82 pounds. 2. Waist to overhead lift: Occasionally, when handling extension ladders, weighing up to 50 pounds. 3. Horizontal lift: Occasionally, pounds when handling same materials as listed above. 4. Pushing/Pulling: Occasionally, up to 150 pounds when pulling cable off from reels. Also needed occasionally when moving thumper on two-wheeled cart. 5. Carry: Occasionally, up to 25 pounds when carrying tool bags. Occasionally, up to 50 pounds when carrying ladder from truck to worksite. 6. Hand grip: Frequently for completing paperwork, and completing electrical work, with hand tools. 7. Elevated work: Occasionally, when completing electrical repairs. 8. Forward bending in standing: Occasionally, bending to work on electrical equipment. 9. Crawling and kneeling: Frequently kneel to work on electrical devices, file and retrieving documents and supplies. 10. Crouching/deep static: Frequently on job, as well as to retrieve files and equipment. 11. Sitting tolerance: Frequently, for driving company vehicle to and from worksite. 12. Bending tolerance: Frequently when on job and when walking around the shop. 13. Walking: Frequently around job and on job site. 14. Stepladder climbing: Occasionally to climb ladders or stools to repair and inspect electrical devices.

7 15. Balance: Needed for climbing ladders and working on slippery conditions while visiting sites that are under construction. 16. Coordination of bilateral upper extremities: Required to complete fine electrical work, repairs, and installation. 17. Exposure to outdoor conditions: Frequently, when driving to different worksites in both extreme cold and heat, as well as precipitation. 18. Extreme noise: Occasionally, when working around power equipment and machinery. 19. Moving parts: Occasionally. Adjusts, inserts form and various office and data processing equipment, power equipment and trenching equipment. 20. Electrical shock: Frequent exposure to low voltage. Opens electrical panels, breakers, and control devices. 21. Exposure to chemicals: Occasionally, using cable cleaner. 22. Vehicular traffic: Frequently drives to members locations, service areas and job sites. All people offered employment for the position listed above will go through a Pre-work Screen. Each person must successfully pass the screen to be hired. Persons hired for the job are expected to potentially do all tasks described in the job description.
