How does this practice help you to provide culturally safe support? Example: Greeting In Māori culture, one aspect of greeting people is that you use a more formal address for older people. 7 Task 2: Impact of your culture on your work For this task, you need to think about how your own values, beliefs and ways of acting and doing things can impact on the people you support. 1. How do your values, beliefs and behaviours impact on the support you give? Identify two of your own values, beliefs and/or ways of acting and doing things. Describe how these could impact on a person you support. Note: culture can include ethnicity, religion, spirituality, sexuality, age, gender or behaviour patterns. Value, belief, way of acting or way of doing things Example: I don t go to church or believe in religion. Potential impact on the support you give The person I support goes to church on Sunday and I need to support them to do that. I don t judge them even though I don t share their beliefs. 9 Task 3: Communicating with someone from another culture For this task, you need to think about how cultural values, beliefs and ways of acting and doing things can impact on effective communication. 1. What are barriers to communication? Sometimes communicating with people from a different culture can be hard. Identify two barriers to effective communication with people from different cultures. For each one, say how this can impact on the support you give a person.
