1 Job Description Position Details Faculty/Professional Support Service School/Department Division/Section/Unit Job Title Services states, Facilities and Capital Development nvironment Team Waste and Recycling Manager Vacancy No 0704 Grade 8 Hours of Work 37 Contract Duration (Perm/Fixed Term) Reports To (Job Title) Permanent Head of nvironmental Sustainability Responsible For (Job Title) Waste and Recycling Assistant x 1 Principal Accountabilities Take lead responsibility for the development, management, monitoring and reporting of the University s Waste, Resource and Recycling Strategy and associated budgets, in support of the University s nvironmental Sustainability Strategy. Take lead responsibility for legislative compliance with respect to waste management for the University and compliance with the requirements of the International environmental management system standard ISO Take lead responsibility for procuring, managing, monitoring and reporting waste management contracts, driving financial efficiencies and ensuring legal compliance. Take lead responsibility for day-to-day waste collections/operations and enquires across the entire University. Facilitate the delivery of the University s state Masterplan Investment Programme concerning waste management, supporting the Head of nvironmental Sustainability, to improve student experience and ensure all aspects support the objectives of the Waste and Recycling Strategy. As a member of the nvironment Management Team, the post holder will undertake a range of managerial duties to ensure excellent and efficient service delivery, work standards and performance.

2 Key Tasks Leadership and Waste Resource/Recycling Strategy Lead, develop and deliver the University s Waste, Resource and Recycling Strategy as part of a wider nvironmental Sustainability Policy and Strategy, for reducing the University s environmental impact (financial and environmental). This will include developing new waste and recycling initiatives to meet current objectives and targets (2020) and develop a new 2025 strategy which will drive further efficiencies and environmental benefits across the University, including resource efficiency and waste minimisation at source. The role will be responsible for implementing and monitoring progress against the Strategy and delivering the associated projects across the University, working with key stakeholders, ensuring communication and engagement are managed and delivered effectively. The post holder will be required to review best practice in the sector and ensure the University is delivering a sector leading excellent and efficient service. ISO and Legal Compliance Responsible for developing and maintaining procedures and systems to ensure the University is evaluating, and complying with relevant waste legislation. This will include keeping up to date with legislative requirements, internal auditing/supply chain auditing, addressing and recording nonconformance. A key aspect of this will be ensuring staff across the university are aware and comply with the developed procedures and developing and delivering training to ensure competency. The role will also take lead responsibility for complying with the requirements of ISO supported by the Head of nvironmental Sustainability. This will involve reporting progress against objectives, targets and KPIs in the Waste Resource/Recycling Strategy, legal compliance (as above), developing and maintaining procedures, defining roles and responsibilities for waste, capturing waste and recycling data, internal and external auditing (contractors), developing and delivering training and reviewing performance on a regular basis. Procurement, Contract Management and fficiency Working with the procurement and legal department, take lead responsibility for the procurement of waste management and recycling contracts across the University, giving best value for money and seeking to reduce waste costs year on year and drive efficiencies. The role will also be responsible for managing and monitoring contract performance, reporting against agreed KPIs and providing financial update reports when required. Operational Waste Management

3 Working with the Waste and Recycling Assistant and Facilities Managers, ensure an excellent and efficient waste management service is delivered to staff and students across the University. This includes engaging with key stakeholders to ensure collections occur in a timely and efficient manner, dealing with incidents and abnormal situations, facilitating student move in and move out weekends in halls of residents and reviewing our day to day systems and processes. states Masterplan Investment Programme Working with the Head of nvironmental Sustainability the role will help facilitate the delivery of the states Masterplan Investment Programme from a waste and recycling perspective. This will involve working with the external environmental sustainability advisor appointed to the capital scheme (new build or refurbishment) and developing targets related to waste management, and ensuring the University s waste design guide is followed by the design team. Liaison, Partnership and Networking Build and maintain good relationships with internal academic and support staff, customers (students, staff, visitors), Student Union, key external organisations such as the Manchester Corridor Group, Manchester City Council, journalists and opinion-forming individuals to promote the University s reputation and interests and to develop the University s Waste and Recycling Strategy. Act as strategic partner in external groups and networks to contribute to local, regional and national projects, and provide opportunities for staff and student engagement (e.g. Housing and nvironment partnership, Corridor Manchester, Manchester a Certain Future). Participate in diverse regional and national networks, to promote the work of the University Sustainability agenda, and actively collaborate with key contacts which will benefit the University. Management and Development Lead and manage the Waste and Recycling Assistant to ensure they contribute to the development and success of the waste related strategies. Undertake Personal Development Reviews (PDRs) and support team members to develop professionally and deliver their allocated objectives. Undertake training and development activities, and attend networking and events to maintain and further develop understanding and knowledge of issues current and relevant to the delivery of strategic aims and objectives. Plan, prioritise and organise the work and resources with allocated budgets and in accordance with a range of University policy and procedure (e.g. financial and legal procedures, employment legislation, IT procedures).

4 Professional duties include, writing business cases, project specifications, carrying out surveys and audits, chairing meetings, progress report writing and deputising for other managers in their absence. Possess an understanding of the Services Group Health and Safety standards, and seek to maintain these standards within the Services Group. Be responsible for a range of managerial and financial tasks, adhering to University policy, procedure and systems. Provide leadership and management support to develop the team, and deliver Strategy. Special Features Miscellaneous You will ensure that appropriate management systems and procedures are in place to meet your health and safety duties and responsibilities contained within the University s health and safety policy. In particular you will ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out in respect of significant hazards and that safety inspections are undertaken on at least an annual cycle in each workplace under your control. You are responsible for applying the University s quality and Diversity Policy in your own area of responsibility and in your general conduct. You have a responsibility to promote high levels of customer care within your own areas of work. You are expected to co-operate with the PDR process, engaging in the setting of objectives in order to assist in the monitoring of performance and the development of the individual. You will assess the training and development needs of each member of staff under your control to ensure they are adequately supported in relation to their work responsibilities. Such other relevant duties commensurate with the grade of the post as may be assigned by the Manager in agreement with you. Such agreement should not be unreasonably withheld.

5 You may be required to undertake a specific Health & Safety role, commensurate with your grade, to support the University in meeting its statutory Health & Safety obligations. This could include acting as a DS Assessor, First Aider, Fire Marshall or Departmental Safety Co-ordinator. The allocation of such roles will be subject to the provision of appropriate training and assessment of competence. You may, with reasonable notice, be required to work at any of the Manchester Metropolitan University sites. You are responsible for assessing and managing risk for all elements of work within your own area/team and for ensuring effective risk management processes are in place.
