3 About the Role Role title: Head of Participation and Club Services Department: Development Working pattern: Full time position (37 hours per week) permanent Location: Based at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham Responsible for: Area Delivery Team, Places to Paddle Manager & Go Canoeing Development Manager Reports to: Head of Strategy and Development Salary: Band 5-37,391 49,450 Role purpose: To manage the development and delivery of programmes to increase participation and to strengthen the network of clubs and centres within British Canoeing.

4 British Canoeing is the United Kingdom's Governing Body for the sport and recreation of canoeing and kayaking. This is an exciting time to join British Canoeing, as we are making progress in delivering Stronger Together - an exciting and ambitious new strategy for paddlesport in the UK ( ). This is a challenging role and, as such, the ideal candidate will excel at working under pressure, balancing and prioritising a demanding workload and be able to work independently. We now have ambitious plans for the future and we are seeking an individual who can develop and deliver our strategy to help us realise the full potential of our sport. We are searching for an innovative and dynamic person who can quickly understand our sport and develop high quality programmes and services, which will provide support to clubs and centres to enable them to grow and to operate more effectively. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and organisational skills combined with experience in implementing programmes at regional or national level within the sporting landscape. The ability to build relationships with key stakeholders is essential, as is a track record in managing projects and that provide both satisfaction and a real return on investment. Candidates will ideally have proven leadership ability and be able to demonstrate a track record of providing innovative solutions and translating these into operational delivery.

6 Person Specification Essential Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline Significant experience of working in the sport sector and an understanding of governing bodies of sport and sports clubs Experience of working with the voluntary sport sector Experience of leading a team and line management Proven experience of developing and maintaining strong partnerships with a wide variety of stakeholders Ability to plan and operate strategically Ability to deal with a varied workload whilst maintaining attention to detail Flexible and agile in thinking with the ability to analyse issues and creatively seek solutions Ability to influence and negotiate Ability to connect into the wider community and external partners to enable delivery of the strategic plan Proven ability to successfully manage projects and contracts and deliver on time Exhibits personal commitment and acts as a role model and ambassador for British Canoeing Team player with the ability to work on own initiative A can do attitude that inspires and motivates others Full current driving licence Prepared to work evenings and weekends where required Able to prioritise work load, make effective decisions under time pressure and meet deadlines

9 Role Profile Responsibilites Design, develop and lead the implementation of high-quality programmes and services, which provide assistance and support to clubs and centres and which enable them to grow and to operate more effectively Lead a review and to manage the affiliation services for clubs and centres within British Canoeing Lead the design and delivery of an annual programme of conferences, seminars and other knowledge sharing opportunities for clubs and centres Lead the review and relaunch of the quality mark schemes for clubs and centres in membership of British Canoeing Provide line management for the Places to Paddle Manager and support the delivery of the plans around access, environment and facilities Develop and build strategic relationships with organisations that may be able to support the development of clubs and centres Establish and manage effective monitoring, evaluation and reporting systems into delivery of programmes Take a leading role within the Development Leadership Team and support the delivery of the wider Development Team Plan and British Canoeing Annual Plan Lead and manage the small team of regional development officers in their work to engage with clubs and centres to engage with the ambitions, programmes and services of British Canoeing Provide line management for the Go Canoeing Development Manager and support the delivery of Go Canoeing to increase regular participation in paddle sport

11 Decision-making The role involves a high degree of autonomy and the post holder needs to be able to prioritise, manage their own time and be able to make independent decisions Expertise in developing strategy and transforming this into operational delivery Developing solutions The ability to develop strategic partnerships and to connect into the club and centre communities to address the challenges and opportunities within this area of work Management of Resources Physical: Development and management of the recreation strategy and annual plan. Design of ongoing programmes and services that evidence impact, and show provider satisfaction and return on investment. Financial: writing business plans and managing budgets. People: Through direct reports, line management responsibility for around 9 staff Delivering programmes and services that show both evidence of impact, and provider satisfaction and return on investment Develop solutions and manage delivery to achieve the related targets within Stronger Together, the Strategic Plan of British Canoeing

12 Working relationships The ability to win the confidence of a large number of volunteers and professionals working within clubs and centres within British Canoeing Work collaboratively with internal colleagues within British Canoeing Developing Others Provide advice, guidance and support the development of others within the team and the wider club and centre community Develop and share best practice guidance within the network Establish strong strategic partnerships with individuals within other organisations that may share similar goals include Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, national youth groups Demonstrate strong in uencing skills and a solution focused approach Resilience and ability to manage several projects and to produce results Demonstrably able to work in line with the Values of British Canoeing

14 Knowledge and expertise Educated to degree level or an equivalent level Expertise in developing strategy and managing delivery A strong understanding of key trends and issues facing the sector and ability to anticipate future challenges Strong leadership and organisational skills Experience in delivering programmes at regional or national level within the sporting landscape A proven track record of delivering results Well organised and methodical with the ability to meet deadlines Additional information Access to vehicle with current full driving licence Willingness to work flexible hours from time to time, including some weekend and evening working The post-holder's duties must at all times be carried out in compliance with the British Canoeing's Equality Policy, Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults Policy The post-holder must ensure the health and safety of all staff, volunteers, personnel and resources within the post-holder's duties and personal responsibilities are as per the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
