In general a running business consists of one or many more people, which are specialized in different ways and aligned to dedicated departments such as finance, purchasing, production or development. In order to align actions and tasks, a single person, a group of people and especially whole organizations need a vision and an overall target, which has to be pursued. Resources (human or financial) are invested accordingly as well as organizational structure is influenced upon that. Respective goals can be tracked periodically until the intended timeframe is reached which provides transparency for the management and stakeholders. As business strategy

5 has an impact on all components and stakeholders of an enterprise for a long period of time there are many different approaches. In the first part of the research we reviewed literature in order to extract relevant approaches regarding business strategies as well as agility principles, knowledge management and sustainability aspects. In the second part of the PhD research these topics are investigated based on available datasets. The result of the literature research is that agile aspects are very well examined in production or development but the application on business strategies and especially in the automotive sector has not yet been analyzed in detail. Also sustainability has been examined in the first part of this research summarizing the triple bottom line approach. Target setting and management by objectives has lead to the conclusion that the effects and correlations of the detailed targets have not yet been examined at least not in the automotive sector. The target of the research is to analyze business strategies with focus on the automotive sector and to methods resembling high agility as well as to extend this flexibility by self-adjusting approaches that are currently used at network-based companies.
