1 Kiewit Building Group Newsletter 9/16/14 Volume 2 Week 38 ACCOUNTABILITY Everyone working on our jobs has a duty to themselves and to their fellow workers to be constantly aware of potentially unsafe acts and conditions. When unsafe acts and conditions are noted, proper action must be taken to reduce or eliminate the hazard. Accountability must be implemented fairly, consistently and uniformly. 1

3 Employee - Come to work prepared to work safely. - Maintain a positive attitude toward safety at all times. - Follow all safety rules at all times. - Keep your work areas in a neat and orderly manner. - Report all incidents/accidents immediately to your supervisor. - Report and correct any unsafe working behavior or condition immediately. Foremen/Field Supervision - Set an example for safety. - Communicate Black and White Expectations and hold individuals accountable. - Observe your operations and correct all unsafe behaviors or safety deficiencies immediately. - Develop and review Work Plans and Hazard Analyses with the crew. Make sure all employees in the crew understand the plan and how to work safe. - Train your employees to the Kiewit standards and rules. - Demand that work areas be maintained in a neat and orderly manner. - Report and investigate all incidents/accidents immediately. - Ensure that all required safety equipment is available and that the employees know the proper way to use the equipment. - Craft Superintendents to play role in training. 3 Management - Support a Safety First attitude, hold individuals accountable for safety in their operations. - Maintain a safety focus at all times; set an example for safety. - Establish clear Black and White Expectations for safety performance. - Be proactively involved in safety program Looking ahead at job needs. - Sponsor must be focused on Safety First during job visits.

5 SAFETY EXPECTATIONS OF A SUPERVISOR - Work every shift with ZERO Accidents. - Maintain a safety focus and a positive attitude toward safety at all times. - Set a standard of excellence for safety for your crew. - Know, understand, and implement all Kiewit safety requirements for your operations. - Conduct your work and maintain your work area in a professional manner. TO ACHIEVE THESE EXPECTATIONS, EACH SUPERVISOR MUST DO THE FOLLOWING: - Be in full compliance with all PPE requirements at all times. - Participate in the complete and timely indoctrination of all new employees. - Work with the crew to complete a Hazard Analysis for all work operations. - Ensure that each person you are responsible for understands their work assignments clearly, and all associated hazards and protective measures. - Never allow anyone to work in an unsafe manner or commit an unsafe act without stopping to correct the situation immediately. - When in doubt, ask your supervisor as to the correct protective measures to take to ensure the safety of the crew working with you. - Prepare meaningful training for each member of your crew during daily toolbox meetings. - Do not tolerate any violation of Kiewit Safety Policies or unsafe behavior of any kind You are an employer, enforce the rules. - Ensure 100% attendance at all safety meetings. - Report all near misses, equipment damage and injuries immediately.
