2 1.0 Introduction 1.1 This policy applies to all employees and also, as appropriate, to volunteers agency staff, governors and trustees who will all receive a tailored induction programme which will include appropriate information, training, observation, and mentoring. Safeguarding children and child protection will feature prominently in every induction programme. 1.2 The first weeks and months are vital to the success of any appointment. The arrangements made for introducing a new employee, volunteer or governor to the duties of the post, to the school and to the Trust as a whole, provide the foundation for successful and safe contribution to the Trust. The Induction Programme is designed to help new employees, volunteers and governors become familiar with the requirements of their position and learn about the Trust and school culture, ethos and working practices effectively and efficiently so that they become knowledgeable and confident as quickly as possible. The Induction Programme should be cross- referenced to the NQT Induction requirements ( and probationary periods for support staff, as appropriate. 1.3 The induction process will Provide information and training on the school s policies and procedures Provide Child Protection training and assess its effectiveness Enable the colleague to contribute to improving and developing the overall effectiveness of the school, raising student achievement, and meeting the needs of students, parents and the wider community Contribute to the colleague s sense of job satisfaction and personal achievement Explain the Trust s Code of Conduct to ensure that all staff, volunteers, governors and Trustees new to the Trust understand what is expected of them at the school and gain support to achieve those expectation Ensure that all staff, volunteers, governors and Trustees new to the Trust have an effective understanding of safeguarding, particularly if English is not their first language. Explain Health and Safety within the workplace and the Data Protection policy with reference to the General Data Protection Regulations and the Data Protection Act Identify and address any specific training and development needs 1.4 The induction programme will include: an induction checklist of the policies, procedures and training to be covered A guided tour of the school site details of help and support available details of work shadowing, if appropriate a diary of induction meetings and briefings details of other relevant individuals with responsibility for induction e.g. the head of faculty/department or mentor

3 2. Management and Organisation of Induction 2.1. Responsibility for Induction: The delivery of the programme of induction will normally be delegated down to colleagues with specific supervisory and/or line management responsibility The HR Officer (designated HR lead for the school) is responsible for the overall management and organisation of the paperwork for staff including o Ensuring that reception is aware that a new member of staff, volunteer or governor will be arriving and that they are appropriately welcomed o Ensuring that any immediate needs are identified prior to the date of arrival where possible o Ensuring that any documents and information have been prepared for the new employee o Ensure that the paperwork for Induction Programme is returned and that it has been delivered appropriately. If in doubt as to who the HR Officer should be then contact the Trust s Director of HR. Members of the Senior Leadership Team may be designated specific responsibilities for staff inductions by the school, which may include : o The overall management and organisation of the induction of new teachers, supply teachers, teaching assistant and SENCO. The Principal and Chair of Governors are responsible for the overall management and organisation of induction of Governors The Chair of the Trust Board and the CEO are responsible for the overall management and organisation of the induction of Trustees. 2.2 The person(s) responsible for induction should Make arrangements to ensure that a new member of staff, governor or trustee is welcomed. Ensure that immediate information and required equipment are identified before taking up the position where possible Plan and deliver an induction programme as outlined in Appendix 1 below, that is tailored to the role and needs of the new member of staff or governor Make an evaluation for those where English is not the first language as to how best to impart safeguarding information and to ensure comprehension. Ensure that correct paperwork is returned to the HR Officer.

4 Appendix 1 The Induction Programme Induction Programme The person responsible for induction should ensure that an Induction Programme is provided personally, or by the line manager, which will include: a checklist of the policies and procedures to be understood, including health and safety policy, Child Protection and Safeguarding policies and evacuation procedures. Child Protection and Prevent training details of help and support available access to and training on any equipment required for the post access to the school calendar details of other relevant individuals with responsibility for induction e.g. the designated line manager. Induction programmes should be tailored to specific individuals. Areas which should be considered for each category of staff are set out below. These are not intended to be exhaustive and careful consideration should be given in relation to each post and the experience of the post holder. Core Documentation All new staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the delegated manager. The core documentation should include: Safeguarding Children and Child Protection and Part 1 of KCSIE Health and safety Fire and emergency procedures First aid Code of Conduct Data Protection Staff Handbook Teaching Staff including Teaching assistants All new staff will be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the delegated manager. In addition to the core documentation this should include: Schemes of work, Assessment advice, recording, reporting, resources and procedures, Class and set lists, Information on whole school and year group resources, including ICT Timetables, SEND information Promoting Positive Behaviour Policy and Guidance National Curriculum, GCSE and A level documents Policy documents including school improvement/development plan Assessment advice, recording, reporting, resources and procedures Policies and guidance relating to whole school teaching and learning approaches

5 Technicians All new staff will be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the delegated manager. In addition to the core documentation this should include: Information on whole school and year group resources, including ICT Timetables, SEND information Promoting Positive Behaviour Policy National Curriculum documents Policy documents including school improvement/development plan Supply Teachers and Agency Staff All new supply teachers and agency staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the delegated manager. In addition to the core documentation this should include: Relevant information on curriculum, schedules and timetables Behaviour Management Policy Administrative Staff All new staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the delegated manager. In addition to the core documentation this should include: School administrative systems and procedures Specific job related training Cleaning/Caretaking Staff All new staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the delegated manager. This should include: Specific job related training such as manual handling, use of ladders, kitchen safety etc Abestos awareness Governors All new Governors should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the Principal and Chair of Governors. In addition to the core documentation this may include: School Improvement Plan Self Evaluation Form Ofsted and school performance data Dates and times of Local Governing Body and Sub Committee meetings DfE information on the role of a governor Governing Body Policy documents Access and information on previous Governing Body meetings and reports

6 Information and access to governor training courses Any other information appropriate to the role Trustees All new Trustees should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the CEO and Chair of the Trust Board. In addition to the core documentation this may include: Articles of Association Trust Improvement Plan Scheme of Delegation Ofsted and school performance data Dates and times of Trust Board Meetings and Sub Committee Meetings DfES information on the role of a Trustee Trust Board documents Access and information on previous Trust Board meetings and reports Information and access to Trustee training courses Volunteers All new volunteers should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the appropriate faculty member or support team lead. Policy Review The effectiveness of the policy will be reviewed annually by the Director of HR.
