1 Long Term Payer Deveopment 52

2 Late Beginners 53

3 Coaching Late Beginners Due to the embryonic stage of Women s rugby in Ireand, participants often take up the game in their ate teens and as aduts. Safety and payer wefare are at the forefront of IRFU strategies to ensure participants can pay the game quicky and fuy. Efficient contact skis, individua (tacke, mau and continuity) and unit (scrum, ineout, restarts) skis are a high priority for coaches, together with deveoping the other technica, tactica and strategic skis. Rugby union is an invasion team sport with a unique property reating to the off-side aw; inducting and teaching new payers this aspect of the game cannot be over-estimated since athetes and payers from singe and other team sports wi have had itte or no experience of this unique aspect of rugby union. Managing the competence gap between ate beginners and experienced payers when training and paying in competition is critica for payer wefare, enjoyment and retention. This competence gap may be smaer in Stage 3 as the payers are younger (14-17 years), than those ate beginners entering in Stage 5 (aduts). This is mainy due to the rugby specific training age of payers in each stage. Being aware of payer competences and confidence is critica to ensure payers are trained and chaenged appropriatey with the correct intensity and rate of progression. This may require segregation of payers from time to time to aow them to practice at an intensity to faciitate safe and enjoyabe earning. This demands an insightfu, vigiant, patient and innovative coaching approach. The foowing points are highighted to assist coaches of Late Beginners to ensure they are introduced to rugby in a safe and enjoyabe manner: Awareness of payers Acknowedge that there are Late Beginner payers within the group thus ensuring the coach has designed the training session in order to contro their introduction to rugby in a safe, enjoyabe and chaenging way. Integration Knowing how and when to integrate these payers into genera team activities. Coaches may have to taior their session to aow for more individua attention whie aso ensuring that the payer sti fees part of the team. Knowing how/when to introduce them to genera team activities safey is key. Fundamenta ski variances Late Beginners may have come from another sport but some may not have payed any sport before, therefore, their fundamenta sports skis may vary. Some payers may have exceent agiity, baance and co-ordination whie others might have better ba handing skis. Some payers may ack many of these fundamenta sports skis and so training/paying must faciitate the deveopment of these skis. Progression Managing payer expectations and needs with competence and readiness is the responsibiity of the coach. There is no exact time frame for this, however, payer wefare and safety is paramount. Progressing the payer too quicky coud faciitate injury, whie progressing them too sowy might resut in frustration, demotivation and utimate departure from the game. Confidence in contact This reates to both individua and in Unit pay. Payers shoud deveop competence and confidence in a individua contact skis (attack and defence). In particuar, if a payer wishes to pay in the forward unit, they must become comfortabe, confident and competent with a positiona skis required to pay in 1st Phase set piece, Scrum and Line-out. Exposure to Matches Match readiness can be a difficut decision for the coach. Competence, confidence, training performance, physica fitness, size and eve of competition are some of the factors the coach must consider before aowing a payer to pay part or a of a match. Again, the 54

4 coach, in agreement with the payer, shoud decide on what is in the payer s best interest whie aso ensuring her safety. Laws of the Game Rugby can be compicated when it comes to the Laws of the Game, especiay for a payer who has no previous knowedge of the game. A payer is required to have appropriate knowedge and respect for the Laws of the Game. Without appropriate knowedge a payer may put themseves, their team-mates and their opponents at risk. This coud aso ead to frustration for the payer, their team, the opposition and the officias. Game Understanding Coaches shoud remember that payers joining the sport for the first time wi have itte or no game understanding and experience. Deveoping their understanding of what has to be done, when, how and why it is done to be effective is aso paramount. Most other invasion team sports are simiar with respect to principes of pay and therefore payers can readiy transfer these principes across other sports. 55
