3 The business of manufacturing has changed. How will you compete in the new global economy? All of AU's MMC courses are designed with the intent that as the students are learning the materials they are also applying what they ve learned right back into their workplace. Both the employer and the employee are getting instant returns on the program. One of my favourite motto s is learn it today, do it tomorrow. Because of the way the MMC is built, students will learn practical knowledge today and be able to turn around and apply what they ve learned tomorrow. Tim Nerenz, PhD LMD, Executive Consultant Build leadership skills and business expertise quickly, without interrupting production. The biggest challenges facing the Canadian manufacturing industry today are not just a lack of skilled labour, but a lack of experienced management. Practical experience and technical mastery are important, but today s manager also needs business smarts to establish competitive advantage in a rapidly changing global market. The partnership between the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters and Athabasca University (AU) enables you to cultivate business intelligence without having to draw resources away from production. With courses on leadership, supply chain, safety management, fi nancial decision-making, and quality management, you will discover new strategies for enhancing efficiency, stimulating productivity, and driving innovation. The pace of manufacturing is constantly accelerating it s never too soon to sharpen your competitive edge.

5 The beauty of the MMC is the interaction with other members of the manufacturing community. Being able to troubleshoot ideas and action plans with different companies and fresh sets of eyes generates new ideas and new strategies to fix old problems. I would highly recommend the MMC as an extension to any corporate training program. Wade Redl Warehouse Supervisor Crestline Coach Ltd. In today s increasingly competitive global marketplace, the top challenges for the manufacturing industry are two-fold developing advanced competencies in current manufacturing workers, while also facing major skilled workforce shortages. If we are going to develop current manufacturing workers to do advanced troubleshooting with multi-skill abilities, it will require an investment in comprehensive training programs. Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters have partnered with Athabasca University to help bridge this gap and support the growth of manufacturing in Canada by providing leadership and management training that enables workers to develop and improve their skills in a flexible, online environment. 6 How online MMC courses work Just recently I became the Customer Service Manager for our company. Our Human Resource Manager recommended the MMC to me as a good learning tool for new supervisors and managers. I like the AU approach. It is fl exible to a point but there are deadlines so you stay on track. I have been out of school for a number of years, but this transition of online with an instructor and being able to interact with the other students really helps it all make sense. Sharon Strouts Customer Service Manager Standard Machine The Manufacturing Management certificate of completion is founded on the application of theory to practice and peer to peer learning. Students come from a variety of backgrounds across manufacturing sectors and across Canada, bringing diversity of perspective, experience and various areas of expertise to the mix. Asynchronous Asynchronous learning means students are never required to be online at a certain date and time. We have students and academic coaches from across Canada engaging in learning and teaching 24 hours a day. Online Whether in Richmond, BC or Saskatoon, SK, at home or at work, students can access the online learning environment from any device as long as they have access to the internet. Paced Too much fl exibility can be as challenging as not enough. AU s paced courses are short four weeks long have set start and end dates, and include a workplan with assignment deadlines which keep students on track. You control when and where On average, students spend approximately 8-12 hours over roughly fi ve to six days per week on coursework.
