3 INTRODUC TION The pace of change and the complexity of challenges faced by leaders today are huge and increasing. Organizations are dispersed, use matrix reporting structures, market variables are dynamic and unpredictable, and employees are primarily motivated by self-determination and autonomy. In this environment one leader can no longer singlehandedly determine what is needed. New qualities of systems thinking and behavior are required in order to be able to lead and sustain transformational change. Some key issues are: It is no longer possible for one person to know everything; networks of shared leadership are increasingly needed to solve complex problems. The ability to harness and leverage the collective intelligence is critical for success. With so many distractions, leaders need to remain mindful and self-aware, and be able to maintain a systems perspective in order to connect more deeply with one another and with what is unfolding in the broader environment. In seeking to predict the future, leaders need make the shift away from relying on known experience and mental models, and towards embracing uncertainty and co-leading by reading the subtle signals of change. We need leaders who can build capacity on the team, who can facilitate and leverage the individual talents towards larger organizational goals, and who know how to create the conditions for dialogue, trust and a shared sense of ownership and accountability. Nyenrode Business University is constantly exploring future trends in leadership and what is needed in the corporate world to take organizations to the next level. We share the insight with PresenceAtWork that a systems approach to leadership is the way forward and are proud to collaborate with them to offer this Introduction to Collective Leadership. 3

4 Programme Content This introductory program provides the opportunity to explore and experience the foundational concepts of a systems approach to leadership. Participants will gain new perspectives and capability in the following areas: Deeper awareness of self, of others and of what it takes to be in trusted relationships with one another Systems principles and dynamics affecting teams, with the insight and implications that one is part of a larger whole The competencies of effective collaboration, cocreation and co-leadership How to sense the emerging future, seeing with fresh eyes and knowing how to lead or take the system forward Experience the power and potential of a collective in action Target Audience This program is for senior leaders and top talent who want to be at the forefront of leading transformation and change in their organization. These leaders want to see people begin to think and act differently, seeing it as a priority to fundamentally re-wire how people hold themselves and engage with others in the workplace to fully release individual and team potential. Duration 2.5 days of experiential learning in a retreat environment, where evenings are part of a fully integrated, intensive residential program. Approach, Preparation Multiple learning approaches are used to intentionally create a space where personal and professional change can happen. Experiential learning is emphasized and a coaching facilitation style that encourages full interaction is used throughout. We ask that you attend with a willingness to step out of your comfort zone, be challenged, maintain an open mind and take personal ownership to participate fully. Ardanta - Case Study Ardanta a Dutch funeral and life insurance company understood they needed to find a new way of leadership in order to take the company to the next level. In 2009 their new CEO, Robert van der Schaaf, chose to pioneer Collective Leadership with PresenceAtWork. The leadership program that they undertook maneuvered his management team into taking a broader (systems) view of their organization, whereby people began to see the interdependence in their operations. In late 2011 a new CEO, Philippe Wits, took over. He accomplished his vision of a company where not only the leaders, but also the employees, developed this systems view and were able to lead collectively, with each person taking ownership for her or his part in achieving overall company goals. In 2014 a third CEO Guido Horst came on board. It is his aim is to truly integrate and lead forward the behaviors of Collective Leadership within his organization to sustain the transformation that has been achieved. Since adopting its new approach, Ardanta has experienced significant improvements on all key performance indicators. Overall, the company s leadership now feels much more collective than hierarchical. All three Ardanta CEO s will be guest speakers at this Introduction to Collective Leadership Program. Participants will have the opportunity to hear directly their insights and perspectives on how the transformation was achieved at Ardanta. 4
