1 Welcome to the CMMI Use in DoD Programs Workshop & Summit September 7 & 8, 2005 A major Summit to strategize the effective use of CMMI in the acquisition of, and performance on, DoD Programs 1 Vers 4,

2 Summit Purpose This Workshop and Summit will address several significant aspects of utilizing CMMI in the DoD and federal acquisition process that have been troublesome, and develop recommendations that the CMMI Steering Group, and DoD or federal acquisition agencies can address. Some issues that will be discussed are: Background on how organizations approach CMMI appraisals and why Use of Appraisal Disclosure Statement by acquiring organizations Formal guide to CMMI Usage for DoD Training for DoD Acquisition Organizations in the use of CMMI for DoD Government lack of understanding of need for mature SE content and practice Specifying or requiring CMMI in RFPs 2

3 Basic Issues DoD does not always see CMMI Level x performance on all programs within organizations rated CMMI Level x. DoD Program offices are generally not asking for the right or most effective thing when they desire to impose CMMI requirements on programs DoD program offices do not always have a full understanding of what a CMMI rating (level) means, in terms of: Organizational scope & coverage Discipline scope & coverage Program scope & coverage Industry disclosure of CMMI appraisal results is not always as complete or informative as it could be 3
