2 Dissemination Headteacher to ensure contents of this policy are included during induction of all new staff. Where appropriate, staff must sign to say that they have read and understand the contents of this policy. All staff, volunteers and visitors will be made aware that the policy is kept on the school network and that paper copies are available on request. Introduction The first weeks and months are vital to the success of any appointment. The arrangements made for introducing a new employee, governor, student or volunteer to the duties of the post, and to the school as a whole, provide the foundation for a successful and safe contribution to the school. The aims of this policy: Our priority is to raise standards and improve the quality of education for our pupils in a safe and welcoming environment and we believe staff who are well supported and confident in their roles will help achieve this more successfully. The induction programme is designed to help new employees, governors, students and volunteers to become familiar with the requirements of their position and learn about the school culture, ethos and working practices effectively and efficiently so that they become knowledgeable and confident as quickly as possible. The induction process will: Provide information and training on the school s policies and procedures Provide Child Protection information and procedures Explain the school s Code of Conduct Enable colleagues to contribute to improving and developing the overall effectiveness of the school Contribute to colleagues sense of job satisfaction and personal achievement Identify and address any specific training needs The induction programme will include: An induction checklist of the policies, procedures and training to be covered An induction timetable Details of help and support available Details of work shadowing, if appropriate A diary of induction meetings Details of other relevant individuals with responsibility for induction, ie the designated mentor or supervisor Appendices Appendix 1 Appendix 2 Appendix 3 Management and Organisation of Induction The Induction Programme Induction Checklist Associated Documents - Governor Induction Policy, Volunteer Agreement, Contractors Induction 1

3 Appendix 1 - Management and Organisation of Induction - The Headteacher is responsible for the overall management and organization of induction of new employees, supply teachers and agency staff. - The Volunteer Co-ordinator is responsible for the overall management and organization of induction of volunteers. - The Student Co-Ordinator is responsible for the overall management and organization of induction of students. - The Clerk to Governors is responsible for the overall management and organization of induction of governors. The person responsible for induction should: Make arrangements to ensure that a new member of staff, volunteer, student or governor is welcomed Ensure that immediate needs are identified before taking up the position where possible Provide a tour of the school and information about facilities, answer any questions and give practical advice Introduce key personnel Ensure that an induction Programme is provided, delivered and evaluated. 2

4 Appendix 2 The Induction Programme The person responsible for induction should ensure that an Induction Programme is provided personally, or by the line manager or mentor, or another person with delegated responsibility, which will include: a statement of training needs, in particular Child Protection and Health and Safety a training timetable a checklist of the policies and procedures to be understood details of help and support available a diary of meetings details of other relevant individuals with responsibility for induction e.g. the designated mentor or supervisor. Induction programmes should be tailored to specific individuals. Areas which should be considered for each category of staff are set out below. These are not intended to be exhaustive and careful consideration should be given in relation to each post and the experience of the post holder. Teaching Staff, including Teaching Assistants All new staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the Headteacher. This should include: Staff Handbook Staff Code of Conduct Child Protection Handbook, Part 1 of Keeping Children Safe in Education & Referral Form Staff Suitability Declaration Safety Induction (including fire, emergency & first aid procedures) Signposting to school policies & School Development Plan National Curriculum documents Year Group Scheme of Works Assessment Advice, recording, reporting, resources and procedures Class Lists Information on whole school and year group resources, including ICT Timetables, SEN information Supply Teachers and Agency Staff All new supply teachers and agency staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the Headteacher. This should include: Staff Handbook Code of Conduct for Third Parties Part 1 of Keeping Children Safe in Education Child Protection Procedures for Temporary Workers Safety Induction (to include fire, emergency and first aid procedures) Signposting to school policies Relevant information on curriculum, schedules and timetables 3

5 Administrative Staff All new staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the School Business Manager. This should include Staff Handbook Staff Code of Conduct Child Protection Handbook, Part 1 of Keeping Children Safe in Education & Referral Form Staff Suitability Declaration Safety induction (including fire, emergency & first aid procedures) Signposting to policy documents and school development plan School administrative systems and procedures Specific job related training such as FMS, SIMS, Parentpay, etc. Lunchtime Supervisors All new staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the Business Manager/Senior Lunchtime Supervisor. This should include: Staff Handbook Staff Code of Conduct Child Protection Handbook, Part 1 of Keeping Children Safe in Education & Referral Form Behaviour Policy Staff Suitability Declaration Safety Induction (including fire, emergency and first aid procedures) Signposting to school policies Specific job related training such as Behaviour management Cleaning/Caretaking/Kitchen Staff All new staff should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the School Business Manager. This should include: Staff Handbook Staff Code of Conduct Child Protection Handbook, Part 1 of Keeping Children Safe in Education & Referral Form Staff Suitability Declaration Safety induction (including fire, emergency & first aid procedures) Signposting to policy documents and school development plan Specific job related training such as manual handling, use of ladders, kitchen safety etc. Governors All new Governors should be given appropriate induction advice, training and resources by the Clerk to Governors, to include: Safeguarding Information for Governors Governor Declaration of Eligibility form DBS Application Process Governors Code of Conduct Register of Business Interests form DfE Governors Handbook 4
