1 Job title Senior Head of Production Job family Production Management Band SM2 Job purpose Working with the Genre Director, the Senior Head of Production will define and execute the production strategy for the genre. Leading a large complex team to deliver a high quality, ambitious production operation both UK based and overseas to achieve the editorial ambition across a range of platforms. Key responsibilities and accountabilities In conjunction with senior leaders, develop a coherent output, commercial and operational strategy for the genre, which meets the requirements of the BBC and Divisional strategy. Deliver the genre s strategy as efficiently as possible whilst ensuring quality is maintained; driving maximum value through reducing costs, increasing income, ensuring appropriate investment in programming and the effective deployment of approved technologies to maximise return to the Audience. Accountable for staff scheduling, budgeting and managing productions in line with genre frameworks, risk management and Health and Safety requirements, enabling the genre to produce, broadcast and exploit content in a timely manner in the most cost effective way. Work with commissioners and editorial leads to understand their strategic direction, in order for teams to successfully present a range of financially viable programme and content proposals to secure business. Accountable for agreeing the price for each commission and ensuring that content delivery is feasible within the proposed timeframe and budget, ensuring resources and editorial aspirations are aligned. Provide inspirational leadership and support career development and talent retention. Build and nurture strategic partnerships with a wide range of internal and external customers and stakeholders ensuring the genre is represented credibly to the BBC and the external environment. Drive the negotiation to secure production resources with external suppliers ensuring investment meets stakeholder and audience expectations. Establish and oversee plans for business continuity and disaster recovery in the production area, ensuring links with the overall plans for each division. Knowledge, skills, training and experience Essential As an expert in their field, they will provide professional leadership and act as roles models to their teams and colleagues Adept at managing numerous, diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and managing numerous competing priorities Experience of operating at a senior level in the public sector and/or dealing with external/governmental stakeholders. A convincing and persuasive communicator, required to modify beliefs and opinions of teams, as well as senior stakeholders, able to establish effective and collaborative relations across BBC departments, and external agencies/stakeholders where required. 2 broadcasting industry and wider media sector, and deep knowledge of output across the whole of the BBC, as well as that of competitors. Deep expertise and experience in respective content area and an internally recognised source for creative thinking and innovation Thorough understanding of the way in which programmes are commissioned, financed and produced. Broad and comprehensive understanding of all BBC s legal, contractual agreements and regulations as they apply to programme making, broadcasting and digital media. Extensive experience in managing significant budgets and understanding key financial drivers. Job impact Decision making Develop, adapt and execute genre plans in line with strategic plans and direction from Senior Leaders. Undertakes a wide range of activities factoring in multiple, diverse considerations, requiring complex analytics and decision making, interpretative thinking and a solutions-focused approach. Scope Leads a team within an area of a Genre in a Content function. Ability to apply external sector knowledge, contextualising challenges and changes in the sector, to understand the relative positioning and strength of the BBC s services/practices. Strategic impact/influence Scope Provides input to genre strategy. In-depth knowledge of how own teams integrate within the division, including how processes and resources interact to help achieve divisional targets and objectives. Leads change and innovations within the Sport Production Model. Member of the Sport Board and Sport Operations Group. Responsible for implementation and delivery of the Sport 20/20 Strategy within in house Production. Responsible for monitoring and reporting on performance against objectives and key performance indicators. Accountable for benefits realisation associated with major technology projects (supported by editorial colleagues). Supports other divisions (e.g. Technology, Procurement, Property) with the development and implementation of their strategies. To lead in house production within the Sport Contestibility process alongside Editorial colleagues. Ensuring delivery of compelling and market leading bid proposals including documentation, production plans and pitch presentations As part of Sport Greenlight Group, supports the Head of Sport Rights to identify opportunities for new programming at an early stage and ensure requirements are achievable. Accountable for highlighting any public service issues relating to commercial exploitation of content. Accountable for consistency of approach in scheduling, budgeting and managing productions throughout BBC Sport in line with relevant BBC frameworks and requirements. 4 strategic objectives and commissions won. Manage and deliver productions Ensure the skillset amongst production staff is fit for evolving operational models and workflows in relation to changing audience demands across different platforms. Oversees the management of BBC Sport overall staffing budget. Jointly accountable with senior editorial colleagues for ensuring an understanding of - and compliance with - BBC policies, guidelines, legislative and regulatory requirements (with particular emphasis on Health & Safety and Editorial Policy) in order to minimise the BBC s exposure to risk. Accountable for ensuring production teams understand the vital importance of acquiring all necessary rights in a timely manner to enable the BBC to produce, broadcast and otherwise exploit its content. Accountable for resolving material operational and financial issues commensurate with the role. Jointly accountable with senior editorial colleagues for delivering demonstrable value for money through effective management of people and resources. Plan and manage production finances Accountable for the Sport Production Finance Committee and authorising the start of productions, ensuring resources and editorial aspirations are aligned. Accountable for decisions required to manage the financial and operational performance of the production area based on expert knowledge and financial information. Responsible for the strategic allocation of funding and - where necessary approving, setting, reviewing and monitoring budgets. Oversees assessment of the financial viability of content ideas, identifying and mitigating any risks. Responsible for ensuring appropriate financial support is provided by Finance on high financial risk/complex productions and/or across a portfolio of productions. Manage media assets Responsible for management of the BBC Sport Library Page 4 of 5

5 Accountable for ensuring robust processes are in place throughout the production process for fully and accurately capturing and managing metadata in line with BBC guidelines and policies. Accountable (with support from editorial colleagues and working with BBC Technology & Information & Archives) for ensuring that BBC Sport efficiently manage, retain and delete media assets. Manage the performance of production areas Ensures adequate training, development and performance management arrangements are in place for production staff in line with BBC guidelines and policies. Jointly accountable with senior editorial colleagues for integrating safety and risk management into the production process. Advises on safety and risk issues and agrees BBC Safety action plans. Level 3. Accountable for working with Procurement to implement the strategy for the procurement of production resources, developing supplier frameworks and lists, and ensuring compliance with them. Jointly accountable with senior editorial colleagues for establishing and overseeing plans for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery in the production area and ensuring the BBC Sport Business Continuity Plan is up to date. Represents Sport on BCDRT.
