1 SAINSBURY CENTRE FOR VISUAL ARTS HEAD OF LEARNING Ref: ALC596 The Post To lead the Learning team and all the education programmes of the Sainsbury Centre. The team includes 5 staff, around 60 guides and 20 artist freelancers. The post holder is a senior manager and plays a strategic management role within the Sainsbury Centre. The post holder takes on specific management duties when required by the Director and Deputy Director. The Sainsbury Centre Learning team works with a wide range of audiences, from academic specialists to the general visitor, to encourage engagement with the Sainsbury Centre collections and exhibitions. The team works closely with colleagues across the organisation to develop integrated programmes that support the key strategic aims of the Sainsbury Centre. The post-holder steers the overall education strategy and is responsible for providing a high quality year-round programme that engages as many schools, families, adults and young people with the Sainsbury Centre as possible. The post holder also takes a lead in community programmes for under-represented audiences among schools, families, adults and young people to increase the diversity of visitors benefiting from learning programmes and engagement with the Sainsbury Centre. The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA) The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA) is one of the most prominent university art galleries in Britain, and one of the nation s principal centres for the study and presentation of art. It was founded in 1973 at the University of East Anglia (UEA) through the support of one of the nation s great philanthropic families, Sir Robert and Lady Lisa Sainsbury. The extraordinary gift of their Art Collection also included a building, the first major public work by the architect Lord Norman Foster, which is considered a seminal work of the second half of the twentieth century. The Sainsbury Collection includes works dating from prehistory to the late twentieth century from across the globe. There are major holdings of art from Oceania, Africa, the Americas, and Asia; the ancient Mediterranean, classical cultures of Egypt, Greece and Rome, Medieval Europe, including a significant number of works by masters of acknowledged European modern art such as Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas, Francis Bacon, Jacob Epstein, Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti, Amedeo Modigliani and Paul Gauguin. Alongside the Sainsbury Collection sits two further major collections, the Anderson Collection of Art Nouveau, the second most substantial in the

2 UK, and the University Collection of Abstract and Constructivist Art and Design. A recent survey in the Independent on Sunday rated the Sainsbury Centre as being one of the top ten art galleries in the nation and in 2014 we were Shortlisted for Art Fund Museum of the Year. Person Specification The person specification for this post is attached as Appendix B. GENERAL Salary Salary will be 40,082 to 46,414 per annum on Grade 8 on the single salary spine. The normal expectation is that starting salary will be at the minimum of the advertised salary scale. Starting date The post is available from 20 June 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter on a full-time, indefinite basis. Terms and Conditions of Appointment Full details of terms and conditions of employment for Administrative Staff will be made available to the candidate to whom the appointment is offered. Relocation Expenses Relocation expenses are reimbursable under certain conditions. Residence The University is strongly committed to providing an excellent student experience and research environment, and it is expected that all staff will be available on campus to carry out their duties during the working week in support of these goals. Absences for significant periods are by agreement with the Head of School or Head of Division.

3 Annual Leave Entitlement There is an annual holiday entitlement of six weeks plus statutory (8 days) and customary (6 days) holidays. Superannuation The post is superannuable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme. The acclaimed programme holds a Sandford Award for Heritage Education and a Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Mark. Main Tasks Programme Lead the development of the all programmes, including Adults, Higher Education, Schools, Families and Young People s, ensuring this reflects the gallery s headline activities and priorities, and is of the highest quality. This may include externally funded programmes with other partners.

7 Develop innovative programmes that engage with new and under-represented audiences and communities. Maintain good relationships with schools in the region and ensure communication and level of service and the regular organisation of Teachers events and training Manage an active Outreach programme and the established relationships with UEA Outreach Promote interdisciplinary collaborations with subject disciplines around the University, embedding relationships and encouraging subject specialists to pursue their public communication and teaching in and with the Sainsbury Centre collections and exhibitions Manage the development of digital learning resources ensuring these are appropriate for their target audience and conversant with the latest developments in online learning practice. Strategy, Policy and Budgets Work with members of the Sainsbury Centre management team to develop the strategy and appropriate policies for Adults, HE/FE, Schools, Families and Young People and to ensure that visitor targets are met and monitored. Produce a policy document for Learning Policy and Strategy, to be reviewed by the Sainsbury Centre Board. Manage the budget for the Learning team and maintain and develop revenue streams. Identify and manage funding applications for potential sources of support for the programme and for future growth. Manage the Learning Team and oversee the Guides programme of activities and artist educator training and recruitment. Contribute fully as a senior member of the management team, attending management team meetings and deputising for the Deputy Director when necessary. Representation Ensure that programmes are soundly based on relevant pedagogy; remain abreast of and contribute actively to current best practice in the field. Act as an advocate and ambassador for the Sainsbury Centre, work with specialist national bodies and organisations and develop strategic partnerships with these

8 General organisations.to raise the profile of the Sainsbury Centre as a leader in Gallery Education. Work at times that are suited to the needs of adults, schools, young people and families, including evenings and weekends as necessary. Take responsibility for safeguarding policies and procedures at the Sainsbury Centre and ensure all work is carried out in accordance with best practice. Operate in accordance with Sainsbury Centre health and safety practices, employment and security procedures. Carry out other such duties as required by the Director and Deputy Director. Any other such duties as may be assigned by the Manager that are commensurate with the grade of the post April 2016

9 PERSON SPECIFICATION REF: ALC596 APPENDIX B Post Title: Head of Learning Date: April 2016 Grade: 8 Department: Sainsbury Centre of Visual Arts (SCVA) Criteria Essential Desirable Education, Experience & Achievements A relevant degree to the Sainsbury Centre s collection or equivalent qualification. Sound experience of working in a museum, arts or similar institution, demonstrating involvement in the development of innovative educational programmes for adults, Higher Education, schools, families and/or young people. Preference will be given to candidates with experience of working in a museum or gallery. Experience of successful grant applications. Experience of developing sector-leading educational resources as well as content for digital learning platforms. A relevant post-graduate degree which might include a teaching certificate or sufficient teaching skills and experience in either schools or higher education. Skills & Knowledge Demonstrable ability to write and implement strategy, manage staff and leadership of a team. Demonstrable ability to engage with curators and academics and to contribute to the Sainsbury Centre s intellectual agenda. Evidence of prioritising effectively and meeting tight deadlines across a range of project work. The initiative, originality and creativity essential to lead the development of a world class programme of Learning and Engagement activities. An established or emerging profile within the museum/education community and a network of museum/education contacts. Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
