2 Scouts of the Word Award YOUTH PROGRAMME

3 Introduction The Scouts of the Word Award chaenges a young peope, Scouts and non-scouts, to think about goba issues and act upon them in their oca community. It is the ony award for young peope provided by Word Scouting. As part of the earning experience, you can gain the knowedge, skis, and attitudes needed to hep sove goba issues at oca eve. The award requires a commitment from you to make your community a better pace. On competion, you wi be part of a network that provides inspiration to others to take action!

4 History In 2004, appreciative of its partnership with the UN, the Word Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) signed an agreement with the UN to contribute activey to the MDG campaign. The Scouts of the Word Award (SW Award) was aunched to encourage thousands of Scouts and non-scouts to adopt word citizenship.

5 History It offers an educationa framework to understand a goba chaenge and run a vountary service, ong-term deveopment project to act on this chaenge at oca eve. Whie the purpose of the award fundamentay remains educationa, it aso seeks to impact society. We wi constanty monitor the new, post UN sustainabe deveopment goas (SDGs) and continuousy aim to activey address them year after year aong with other oca and internationa deveopmenta goas.

6 Fieds of Action From the MDGs, WOSM chose three areas to focus on with the SW Award: deveopment, peace, and the environment. These three fieds for action frame the projects run by Scouts and non-scouts pursuing the SW Award.

7 Deveopment change, growth, or improvement over a period of time. Fieds of Action Peace a situation in which there is no war between countries or groups. Environment the natura word incuding and, water, air, pants, and animas especiay considered as something that is affected by human activity.

8 v The SW Award consists of three components: 1. The SW Award Discovery (Exporing and Responding) 2. The SW Award Vountary Service (Taking Action) 3. The SW Award Network (Just the Beginning) SW Award Programme

9 Discovery The SW Discovery is the first stage in the process of the SW Award Programme. It wi give you an opportunity to expore and discover an issue faced by your oca community. Once you understand the chaenge, you can respond to what you have discovered. You then research and see how it impacts you and your community. Finay, once you ve acquired the reevant skis during our training workshops, you can start panning a service project designed to address this chaenge.

10 Discovery - Objective Become famiiar with the stages of the SW Award Programme (Discovery > Vountary Service > Network > Award). Activey understood the entire context of a oca situation where a community is facing issues reated to deveopment, peace, and/or the environment. Deveoped a feeing of empathy and persona commitment regarding these issues. Set up a persona pan of action in order to pay an efficient roe in increasing awareness and heping communities facing such issues. Started to pan your service project (SW Vountary Service).

11 Discovery - Layout An SW Discovery asts a few days (a minimum of 21 working hours). Exporing: In the first step of the SW Discovery, you wi expore a specific issue reated to deveopment, peace and/or the environment. By interacting with the oca community you wi begin to understand its compexities.

12 Discovery - Layout Responding : In the second step of the SW Discovery, you wi respond to what you have experienced during the exporation phase. You wi then process a the coected information, and digest, debate, and understand the causes and the consequences of the issue at stake.

13 Discovery - Summary Attend an SW Discovery, which can take pace in a registered permanent or temporary SW Award Base or another appropriate site. Vaidate your SW Discovery by achieving the objectives described earier and having these achievements assessed. Use your SW Award Passport to keep record of your experiences in preparing for the SW Award. Competing the passport stages wi ead you towards the SW Award itsef.

14 Vountary Service Once you have competed your SW Discovery. Now you need to do a period of vountary service in order to contribute to soving a probem reated to deveopment, peace, or the environment. An SW Vountary Service is a period of persona commitment where you deveop a ong-term (a minimum of 80 working hours) community project.

15 Vountary Service - Objective Transform your commitment into action moving towards active word citizenship. Reinforce your project management skis as we as your knowedge of project dynamics.

16 Vountary Service - Objective Contribute to soving a specific issue reated to deveopment, peace, or the environment whie increasing the awareness of the oca community regarding this issue. Create an opportunity for Scouting to reinforce its capacity as a socia agent, as we as to deveop its partnerships with other organisations and community eaders

17 Vountary Service - Layout Your SW Vountary Service wi focus on the project that you have started to pan at the end of your SW Discovery (or reated to what you have aready drafted).

18 Vountary Service - Form An SW Vountary Service can take two forms: 1. Panning and impementing a project with a team of friends. Exampe: A team of Rovers deveops a campaign in their university to prevent drug abuse.

19 Vountary Service - Form An SW Vountary Service can take two forms: 2. Working to support an existing project aunched by the Scout Movement or another organization. Exampe: A sub-project with our partner UNESCO Word Heritage within one of the designated projects by Word Heritage Vounteers

22 Network Once you have finished the SW Discovery and the SW Vountary Service you can join the SW Award Network. You can then be part of a network of young peope committed to making a difference. How empowering is that? Ony together can we be the change we want to see in the word. Together with Messengers of Peace and the Word Scout Environment Programmes, we can make a difference.

23 Network - Objectives Like any other network, the SW Award Network wi work if it is usefu. Its usefuness remains its key objective. The objectives of the SW Award Network can be divided into two different categories of focus: an SW Award Programme focus and a Better Word focus.

24 Network - Layout To become a member of the SW Award Network, you must have competed the SW Discovery and an SW Vountary Service. You can then join the Network by creating an account on scout.org and report the detais of your project to WOSM. After that you can join the Scouts of the Word Award - Network (Officia Group) Facebook group.

25 Network - Summary The SW Award Network is open to young peope who have obtained the SW Award. Whie its scope of action is very arge, its contributions shoud remain cosey inked to the SW Award Programme or to issues reated to deveopment, peace, and the environment.

26 Once you have competed both an SW Discovery and an SW Vountary Service and joined the Network, you may now receive the SW Award.

27 The SW Award - Criteria Your persona invovement in the SW Discovery and your SW Vountary Service. Your abiity to anayse issues of deveopment, peace, or environment; and the chaenges they represent for the future of society at oca, nationa, and word eve.

28 The SW Award - Criteria The knowedge, skis, attitudes, and vaues you have acquired as we as your state of preparation to continue to work on deveopment, peace, or environmenta matters. Your motivation to make a difference in serving the community and in contributing to making the word a better pace.

30 Pin This badge has aso been adapted into a god pin for Awardees to wear if they are not a Scout or want to continue wearing the award on a different uniform when they become a eader or move on from Scouting.
