2 1. RECRUITMENT PROCESS 1. Position to be advertised through various electronic media, commencing Wednesday 14 th September Applications to be submitted by to Cecilia Rais, Human Resources Manager, at 3. Closing date for applications Close of business, Tuesday 4 th October All applications will be acknowledged by Applications should include a cover letter or , a current resume or CV, and a written application addressing all Selection Criteria (as specified in the attached Position Description). Applications will not progress to interview if all the selection criteria are not addressed. 6. Selected applicants will be invited to attend an interview and will be given at least one week s notice of the time and date. 7. Applicants selected for interviews will be asked to bring details of 3 work referees. 8. Interviews will be conducted by a recruitment panel consisting of: o o o Human Resources Manager Senior Policy Officer, and An external independent representative 9. The interviews take approximately 1½ hours which will be conducted in 3 sections: a) Interviewees will be asked to submit a written exercise prior to meet the panel. They will be given 20 minutes to complete this task. b) Interviewees will be asked the same set of questions which will be given to them 15 minutes prior to meet the panel and after they submit their written exercise. c) Interviewees will have a 30 to 45 minutes face to face interview with the panel 10. The panel reserves the right to ask additional clarifying questions if necessary. 11. The panel will rank eligible applicants in order of preference.

3 12. The panel will confer to confirm its decision. The panel s decision is based on individual merit, taking into account the written application, pre-interview exercise, and interview and also pending referees comments. 13. Referee checks will only be conducted on the selected applicant. 14. In the event that one or more referee check raises questions, the panel will re-convene and discuss strategies. 15. Pending referee checks, the successful applicant will be offered the position. If they decline, the position will be offered to the next ranked person after a reference check. 16. All unsuccessful applicants will be notified in writing as soon as possible after the successful applicant accepts the offer of employment.

We work with consumers to achieve and support systemic change. Being is an independent non-government organisation that receives core and project funding from the Mental Health Commission of NSW. Role Description The Policy Officer position supports Being advocacy work by identifying, researching and advocating on systemic issues relevant to mental health consumers; developing responses on policy issues; providing policy input on committees and in other forums; contributing to BEING s publications; and liaising with a wide range of internal & external stakeholders Duties and Responsibilities: As a member of a small Policy Team: 1. Assist in developing and implementing strategies to increase consumer participation. 2. Plan, conduct and evaluation of consumer consultations throughout the State to ensure our feedback and policy position work is informed by a diversity of consumer perspectives. 3. Code, interpret and analyse data from consumer consultations and existing literature.

8 4. Research and write media releases, social media, position statements, reports and submissions. 5. Support consumers to provide committee representation and to represent BEING and consumer perspectives at committees, meetings and forums. 6. Contribute to the communication and resources of BEING including: inputs and contributions in the preparation of articles for BEING s newsletter and e-news and other resources relevant to the organisation s consultation and participation work. 7. Assist to design, develop and implement strategies to support and train mental health consumers in systemic advocacy. 8. Assist to design, develop and implement strategies to increase the profile of BEING as the peak organisation in NSW for mental health consumers. This includes the development, implementation and monitoring of strategies for increasing membership to BEING. 9. Assist to design, develop and implement strategies to expand the connections of BEING with external mental health consumer networks including consumer workers. 10. Assist in the development, updating and maintenance of resources relevant to the organisation s consultation and participation work. 11. Other tasks or duties consistent with the Policy Officer role Essential criteria 1. An ability to draw on personal experience of mental illness and the experiences of others to inform policy work 1 2. Demonstrated understanding of the systemic issues that can affect people with a lived experience of mental illness. 3. Experience working with various research and analysis methods to provide advice on social policy issues. 4. Demonstrated ability to research and write position statements, reports and/or policy advice and other policy or promotional material. 5. Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with a diversity of stakeholders, including mental health consumers, service providers and policy makers, and manage competing interests. 6. Excellent time management skills, including managing projects and competing demands. 1 This is a designated positon for a person who identifies as having a lived experience of mental illness. Please note that BEING is not interested in the details of an applicant s experience. The applicant or incumbent will not be asked to disclose details of their personal experiences at interview or in the course of their role as Policy Officer. What is important to BEING is the applicant s ability to draw on their personal experience to inform their work in this role. As a recognised designated role though, the fact they identify as having a lived experience will be known. Being has been granted a Section 126 exemption by the Anti-Discrimination Board to recruit a part-time policy officer who is self-identified as having experience of mental illness.

9 7. Demonstrated ability to work both in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision 8. Strong computer skills, including the use of MS Office suite Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint. Desirable criteria: 1. Previous experience in policy or campaigns development, implementation and evaluation. 2. Experience in organising and running community events. 3. Public speaking skills and experience 4. ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE POSITION POLICY OFFICER BEING IS LOOKING FOR A FIXED TERM PART-TIME POLICY OFFICER BEING is currently seeking a part-time Policy Officer to join our busy and dynamic policy team. Your day to day activities will include identifying, researching and advocating on systemic issues relevant to people with a lived experience of mental illness; developing responses on policy issues; supporting people to provide policy input on committees and in other forums; contributing to BEING s publications; and liaising with a wide range of internal & external stakeholders. This role will suit a candidate who has research, policy and advocacy experience, with strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a team, to multi-task and meet deadlines, and a desire to develop in this exciting and challenging role.
